三、阅读理解(12分)
A
Early in the 16th century men were trying to reach Asia by traveling west from Europe. In order to find Asia they had to find a way past South America. The man who finally found the way from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific was Ferdinand Magellan.
Magellan sailed from Seville in August, 1519 with five ships and about 280 men. Fourteen months later, after spending the cold winter on the coast of Patagonia, he discovered the channel (海峡) which is now called Magellan Strait (海峡). In November, 1520, after many months of dangers from rocks and storms, the three remaining ships entered the ocean on the other side of South America.
They then continued, hoping to reach Asia. But they did not see any land until they reached the islands off the coast of Asia. Before they arrived at these islands, later known as the Philippines (菲律宾), men were dying of starvation (饥饿). While they were staying in the Philippines, Magellan was killed in a battle.
The remaining officers then had to get back to Spain. They decided to sail round Africa. After many difficulties, one ship with eighteen men sailed into Seville three years after leaving. They were all that remained of Magellan’s expedition (探险队). However, their achievement was great. They were the first men to sail round the world.
What was the purpose of Magellan’s expedition

NASA (美国宇航局) has a new job listing, and it’s no joke. The US space agency is looking for a “joker” to join their planned mission (任务) to Mars.
A mission to Mars is no laughing matter. The red planet is about 140 million miles (225 million kilometers)away from Earth. A trip there would take around eight months in a small spacecraft. And Mars has a communications delay (延迟) of 20 minutes. This means that astronauts will have to wait 20 minutes for a reply, when a sudden serious event happens.
“When you’re living with others in a confined space for a long period of time, such as on a mission to Mars, problems are likely to happen,” Jeffrey Johnson,a scientist at the University Florida, told The Guardian.
This is probably why NASA wants an astronaut with a sense of humor. “These are people that have the ability to pull everyone together,” Johnson said.
In stressful situations, perhaps humor is a way to know we aren’t alone. By laughing together, we share our stress. Then we can focus on our jobs instead of just worrying.
There are other examples of team “clowns (诙谐的人)”. One example is the journey to South Pole led by Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen. It was a difficult journey, full of danger. Adolf Lindstrom, a cook at Amundsen’s teem was a “clown”. He made people laugh through the whole journey. Amundsen later wrote that Lindstrom was the most valuable member of the team.
But if you’re hoping that your favorite TV comedian will fly to Mars, that probably won’t happen.
“Being funny won’t be enough to get the job,” Johnson said. “They also need to be an excellent scientist and engineer.”
Besides, they must be in top physical condition.
What is NASA’s new job listing
A. A funny scientist. B. A great clown. C. An excellent cook. D. A popular comedian.
What does the underlined word “confined” probably mean
crowded B. open C. small D. empty
How does Johnson think humor can help astronauts
A. It can help them feel less homesick.
B. It can help them know themselves better.
C. It can stop them from feeling worried.
D. It can encourage teamwork on a mission.
Why does the author mention the example of the cook
A. To show the importance of their food.
B. To prove the role of humor in difficult situations.
C. To argue an actor is more important than a scientist.
D. To explain a journey to the South Pole matters a lot.
