系动词本身具有一定的词义但不够完全,必须后接表语共同构成复合谓语,构成所谓的“系表结构”。常见的系动词有:be、remain、seem、appear、smell、feel、sound、taste、look、feel、get、grow、become、keep等。

实义动词具有实际的词义,独立作谓语。实义动词分为及物动词和不及物动词。
(1)及物动词
及物动词后面必须要有自己的宾语,构成所谓的“动宾结构”。
(2)不及物动词
不及物动词不需要宾语,但有些不及物动词与介词连用后接宾语,构成所谓的“介宾结构”。也即,不及物动词要想接宾语,就应当与介词连用。

助动词不能独立作谓语,只能和其他动词的一定形式共同构成复合谓语。助动词分为基本助动词和半助动词。
(1)基本助动词
基本助动词本身没有词义,不能独立作谓语,只能和其他动词的一定形式共同构成复合谓语。基本助动词主要有:be、do、have、shall、should、will、would等。
(2)半助动词
半助动词是一种介于实义动词和助动词之间的动词结构,本身有词义但不够完全,不能独立作谓语,只有和其他动词的不定式共同构成复合谓语,才能表达完整含义。
半助动词主要有两类:be+形容词+to;appear/seem/chance/happen等词+to.

情态动词
情态动词本身有词义但不完全,不能独立作谓语,没有人称和数的变化,只能和其他动词的一定形式共同构成复合谓语。常见的情态动词主要有:can、could、may、might、must、have to、shall、should、ought to、will、would、need、dare、used to等。
shall、should、will、would既可以作助动词,又可以作情态动词。但是,它们作情态动词时具有一定的词义,作助动词时没有词义,只是表示时态。

1. have to意为“不得不, 必须”, 后跟动词原形。
*I have to finish this essay today, as we have to hand it in tomorrow.

2. have to与must的区别。
(1) must强调说话者的主观意愿; have to强调客观上的必要性。
*Still we must climb and dream about what’s at the top of our mountain.
我们仍必须勇于攀登人生的巅峰并憧憬美好未来。
*I have to change the time for the lesson from morning to afternoon for some reasons.
由于某些原因我不得不把上课时间由早晨改到下午。
(2)mustn’t 不许, 不可以, 表示禁止; not have to不必。
*You mustn’t come back after a quarter past eight.
*You don’t have to worry about him. He’s a good swimmer.
3 dare 与 need
I dare not go out alone at night .
It’s quite warm here, we need not turn the heating on yet.

need 和dare 既可作情态动词, 也可用作实义动词 .
情态动词主要用于否定和疑问句中. 用作实义动词, 可用于各种时态.
(1)用作情态动词
*How dare he take my bicycle without even asking!
(2)用作实义动词
*The children don’t dare (to) make a sound while their parents are sleeping.
dare作实义动词时, 在否定句、疑问句中不定式符号to也可以省略。
