8. cut off 切断;断绝
Charlie cuts off the leather top of the shoe and shares the shoe with the other fellow.
查理把鞋子上端的皮子切下来,和另一个人一同分享这只鞋。
① 切下;割下,砍下。
Her little finger was cut off in an accident at the factory.她的小指是在工厂的一次事故中被切掉的。
② 切断电话线使某人通话中断。
We were cut off in the middle of our conversation.
我们的通话中途被切断了。

10. as if 就像……似的;仿佛……似的
He tries cutting and chewing the bottom of the shoe as if it were the finest steak.
他试图切下鞋底并咀嚼,好像在吃最好的牛排。
该句中as if it were the finest steak 用作状语。as if相当于as though,用来引导方式状语从句,从句中应用虚拟语气。当第一、三人称单数作主语时,从句中常用were。
He looks as if he were sick.
他看起来好像是病了。
【名师点津】 在现代英语中常用was来代替were,甚至用is,am取代。
They treated the boy as if he was their own child.
他们像待自己的亲生孩子一样待这个男孩。
It looks as if it is going to rain.
看起来好像要下雨。
此外,as if后还可直接跟不定式。
He opened his mouth as if to speak.
他开口好像要说话。

with nothing to eat 是“with+宾语+to do” 构成的复合结构,此结构在句中作状语。
