I. warming-up Ask the students some questions about the names of countries and their capitals. Teach the new word: capital Answer some questions
II. pre-task Show some flags. Ask the students to tell the countries and the corresponding capitals. e.g. China —— Beijing America —— Washington Japan —— Tokyo Thailand —— Bangkok Canada —— Ottawa France —— Paris New words: Japan, Tokyo, Thailand, Bangkok 2. Show a sentence with some key points missing. Ask the students to make the complete sentence. ______ is the capital of _________. 1. Look at the flags and identify the name of countries and the corresponding capitals and learn some new words 2. Make a sentence like this: _____ is the capital of ______.
II while-task Teach the 8 directions and ask some students the relative directions randomly pointed by the teacher Show the map on page 2. Give the word Beijing on the map, then give the word Tokyo, ask the students where Tokyo is. Then teach them a sentence: Tokyo is east of Beijing. Show other two places, and let the students make sentences according to sentence structure: _____ is _____ of _____. Ask the students to do pair work like this: S1: Where is … S2: … is (the directional words) of … Show a picture of an exhibition and a map of Asia. Teach the words “exhibition” and “Asia”. I. warming-up Show a map of part of Asia with some cities on it. Ask the students tell the direction between any two cities. Ask the students what is east/ west/ south/ north/ north-east/ north-west/ south-east/ south-west of their home. Look at the map and tell the direction between any two cities Tell what are around their home
II. pre-task Ask individual students: Have you been to Beijing Is Beijing far away from Shanghai How can you travel to Beijing How long does it take Answer the teacher’s questions
II while-task Show the map on the top of page 3. Ask the students how we can get to Beijing from Shanghai. By plane = by air By ship = by sea By train Show the distance between Beijing and Shanghai and the time it takes from Shanghai to Beijing. Then ask the students to make sentences like these: It’s about 1,400 kilometres from Shanghai to Beijing. It takes about ten hours to travel from Shanghai to Beijing. (New words: kilometre) Play the cassette, and ask the students listen and repeat the text, then read it together and in different roles. Show two clocks and ask the students how much time it passed. Teach the noun phrases to indicate time. Then introduce how to indicate date, week and year 1 hours 3 days 6 years 8 weeks 5.
