World Animal Day is almost here! On 4 October every year, people around the world celebrate for animals and speak up for animal rights. It is “to make the world a better place for all animals”.
In fact, protecting animals has never become more important. In September, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature reported its yearly Red List update (更
新). It reports about some plant and animal species facing extinction. According to the list, some of the most endangered animals are sharks and rays (鳐鱼), Komodo dragons and giraffes.
Giraffes
Over the last 30 years, the number of giraffes has dropped by 40 per cent. There are now fewer than 100,000 giraffes in the world today. Giraffes are losing their habitat because of human activities such as cutting down trees.
Sharks and rays
Working together, more than 300 researchers did an eight-year study of sharks and rays. The study found that 41 per cent of the 611 ray species are threatened; out of the 536 shark species, 36 per cent are threatened. Sharks and rays are often killed for their meat, skin and fins. They also grow very slowly and don’t have many babies.
Komodo dragons
Komodo dragons are the largest lizards (蜥蜴) in the world. They can grow to three metres long and as heavy as 70 kilograms! Komodo dragons live on only five islands in Indonesia, but they are now in danger of extinction. They have lost a lot of their habitat because of human activities and climate change.
These animals are in danger because of human activities. Some of these things include hunting, overfishing, using toxic (有毒的) chemicals and using the land for ourselves. However, you can still do a lot of things to help protect animals.
●Volunteer at your local zoo or animal shelter (收留中心). All animals need love and care.
●Go outside to see wildlife. If you take a walk in nature, you can see all of the plants and animals around you.
●Speak up for wildlife. You can be a voice for your animal friends. They can’t speak for themselves. Write on social media about the importance of protecting wildlife.
●Learn more about animals’ problems. By learning about their struggles (挣扎), you can find new ways to help them.
