Unit 7 In the future
Period one: p44-45: Listening and speaking: Talking about the future
Teaching objectives: By the end of the lesson, students
1. will be able to use the following vocabulary and the useful phrases: future, enter =come into,
century, happen, able, planet, perhaps, same, talk about, in the future, be able to do sth.,
on other planets, on the Earth, space station, speak the same language, pill, meal, spacecraft, terrible
2. will be able to use the sentence: I think so. I don’t think so. be able to do sth.
3. will be able to talk about things in the future with the simple future tense
Teaching procedures:
I. Pre-task preparation
1. Ask and answer: What will our school be like in next term
II. While-task procedure
1. Learn the sentences: I think so. I don’t think so.
1) We will move to a new school. Do you think that we will be able to study in an air-conditioned classroom
2) Perhaps we will be able to play football in a big playground.
3) Perhaps we will be able to have more computer lessons.
4) Perhaps there will be a large garden in our school.
5) Perhaps there will be a swimming pool in our school.
2. Learn the dialogue on p44
1) Learn the sentence with the word ‘Perhaps’
2) Listen to the tape of the dialogue
3) Judge the sentences true or false with the sentence I think so. or I don’t think so.
(1) Perhaps people will be able to live on other planets.
(2) Perhaps there will be no water or air on the Earth.
(3) Perhaps there will not be enough food for everybody.
(4) Perhaps people will be able to grow vegetables in space stations.
(5) Perhaps there will be no summer or winter.
(6) Perhaps the weather will never be too hot or too cold.
(7) Perhaps people in different countries will all be able to speak the same language.
(8) Perhaps people will be able to understand each other better.
3. Show some pictures and talk about that will happen in the future.
III. Post-task activities
1. Ask the students to make a short dialogue in pairs like this:
---What do you think will happen in the future
---Perhaps people will be able to …/ Perhaps there will (not) be …
---I think so./ I don’t think so.
2. Ask the students to discuss in groups what life will be like in our school in the future/ what life will be like in our city in the future.
IV. Homework:
1. Copy the new words and phrases and then remember them
2. Read the dialogue on p44 after the tape for 5 times and try to recite it
Period two: p46: Our hopes
Teaching objectives: By the end of the lesson, students
1. will be able to use the following vocabulary and the useful phrases: hope, secret, sign, seal, everyone, in ten years’ time, seal it with tape
2. will be able to use the sentence: I hope that…
3. will be able to talk about things in the future with the simple future tense
Teaching procedures:
I. Pre-task preparation
1. Ask the students to talk about what life will be like in our school in the future/ what life will be like in our city in the future.
II. While-task procedure
1. Listen to the tape of the dialogue on p46
2. Teach the three steps of how to make a time box
3. Ask the students to listen to the tape and read after it
4. Ask the students to read the dialogue.
5. Show some pictures and talk about that will happen in the future.
III. Post-task activities
1. Ask the students to read a passage
2. Ask the students to draw the picture according to the picture
3. Ask the students to write their hopes and put in a time box.
4. Ask the students to write about our school in next term
IV. Homework:
1. Copy the new words and phrases and then remember them
2. Write about our school in next term
