Jason and his father were going to the grocery store by car to pick up some apples. It had been an unusual day. The sky was dark but there were few clouds. As they drove up the street, there started to be a rumbling (隆隆的) sound heard across the ground.
Jason's father immediately realized that a tornado (龙卷风) was coming. He stopped the car and told Jason to get out immediately. Jason and his father got out of the car and made their way to the closest building. By this time the wind was blowing harder, and it was hard to see or hear. Debris was falling all over the place. Jason couldn't see his dad anymore. He also realized that he wasn't getting to the building fast enough. He was afraid he would be picked up by the wind and thrown into the air.
As he made his way towards the building, he noticed a field to his right. He could see an irrigation ditch (灌溉渠). In a panic, he scrambled (爬) to the ditch and lay flat on the ground. More debris and objects flew overhead. His heart was beating hard, and he was nervous. He had never been in a tornado before.
After a while, the winds died down and the loud roaring sound was gone. Jason slowly lifted his head and nervously looked around. What he saw was a great mess. Jason could hardly recognize the buildings in front of him because of all the damage.
He stood up and with shaky legs walked to the building. Once there, he pushed the door open and went inside. It was a public building owned by the city. It was empty, but Jason could hear noises further inside. He walked into the large room and saw his dad. He ran across the room and gave him a big hug.

The world's glaciers are melting(融化)quickly. Scientists, from Nature studied 20 years of satellite data of the world's 220,000 mountain glaciers, and found that since 2015, glaciers have lost 298 billion metric tons of ice and snow per year. That is 31% more than 15 years ago, and enough ice melt to put Switzerland under 7.2 meters of water each year.
Scientist say melting is caused by climate(气候)change. Almost all of he world's glaciers are melting. Half of the world's glacier melt is in the United States and Canada. Some smller glaciers are totally lost. The melting "mirrors" the worldwide increase in temperature and is from the burning of coal, oil and gas.
Shrinking(缩小)glaciers are a problem for millions of people who use regular glacier melt for drinking water. Very fast melting can also cause floods(洪水) in places like India. But the biggest problem to the world is rising sea levels. Glaciers are responsible for 21% of sea level rise. Mark Serreze, director of the American National Snow and Ice Data Center(NSIDC)in Colorado, thinks that sea level rise is going to be a bigger and bigger problem, as we move through the 21st century.
Scientists said that it could take hundreds of years to regrow melted glaciers. Twila Moon studies glaciers at the NSIDC. "I'm not sure whether the glaciers can regrow even if the planet's temperature is controlled. We must try to keep as much ice as possible and slow the speed of glacier melting." she said.

How many vocabularies do you know about “climate”
What do “climate emergency", "climate strike" and "upcycling" mean

Climate (气候) change drew the most attention from people around the world in 2019, according to three well-known English dictionaries.
The Oxford, Collins and Cambridge dictionaries chose "climate emergency", "climate strike" and "upcycling", respectively, as their "Word of the Year". This tells us that climate change was a widely-discussed issue (话题) in 2019.
"Climate emergency" means a situation in which urgent action is needed to reduce climate change. "Climate strike" refers to people leaving work or school to call for more action to protect the environment. "Upcycling" refers to making new items out of old or used items to reduce waste.
Climate change has already affected the world in many ways. Take Venice as an example. Due to climate change, Venice experienced the worst flooding (洪水) it has seen in the last 50 years in 2019. Many stores, restaurants and hotels were flooded. This caused serious damage totaling hundreds of millions of euros (欧元).
Although we've known about global warming (全球变暖) for a long time, people have been slow to respond to it. The year 2019 might have been the turning point that will finally encourage us to take responsibility.
"Ten years ago, when the science on the climate issue was first increasing, the influences could be seen as an issue for future generations (子孙后代)," Katharine, a climate scientist, told The New York Times. "It's no doubt our issue now."
However, simply realizing that climate change is a threat (威胁) is not enough. We must take real action before it is too late.

Wetlands—lakes, rivers, marshes and coasts, can maintain biodiversity (保护生物多样性), control floods and remove pollutants. They are also helpful to rice and fish production, transportation and so on. They are important and necessary feeding and breeding grounds for migratory birds. They are the most threatened ecosystem (受到威胁的生态系统).
World Wetlands Day came from the Convention on Wetlands (湿地公约) signed in Iran, China joined the convention on July 31, 1992.By the end of 2019, our country had 57 wetland nature reserves listed as major wetlands for protection under the convention, covering a total of nearly 7 million hectares.______, as China has wetlands with 65.9 million hectares,10 percent of the world's wetland areas, which comes fourth in the world. China also has some of Asia's most important wetlands, such as Poyang Lake and Asia's longest river, Yangtze River.
However, a WWF research showed China's wetlands were seriously threatened by degradation because of pollution, climate change and over-exploitation. So our government has been taking actions to return farmland to wetland and remove some fish farms.
It was reported the 57 key Chinese wetlands increased by 2, 479 hectares from 2018 to 2019.Li Yan, an official from the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, said at a news conference, "The area of wetlands in China has become larger over the past five years, growing by 202, 600 hectares and making a great contribution to water quality and environmental protection. Between 2016 and 2020, China created 201 national wetland parks. China had 899 national wetland parks by the end of 2020, and nearly half of the country's wetlands are protected by some level of government."
China is carrying through on the convention for a continuous development and will make continuing efforts to perfect the laws on wetland protection. Several major projects on wetland protection will be carried out in some major areas, such as Yangtze River and the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei province cluster.

Recycling is a way to take rubbish and turn it into new products. It's helpful to our environment. There are a number of different recycling steps that allow materials to be used more than once.
All kinds of materials can be recycled. Some of the most common things in use today include recycling plastic glass, metals and paper. Things made of these materials include soda cans, plastic milk boxes, newspapers, computers and cardboard boxes.
There are a number of advantages for recycling. These include:Landfills -Recycling materials means less rubbish and saves space in landfills. Resources- When we use materials again, this means we can take fewer resources from the earth. Pollution in general, recycling materials can produce less pollution, helping to keep our environment clean.
Be sure to recycle everything you can in your house and school. There is almost a "recycle" rubbish can around. Be sure to drop your used aluminum cans and plastic bottles there. At home, be sure to put paper things like the newspapers, paper boxes, and homework pages into the recycle box.
Plastics are usually marked with an identification code that shows a recycling symbol and a number from 1 to 7. This shows that the type of chemicals, or materials, is used in making the plastic. Used paper can be recycled around seven times.
It is high time we set up a recycle station in every street, across the city and the country so the cleaners can transport the rubbish conveniently. This is the only way out for handling rubbish without causing danger to the environment and our health. For ourselves, our children and our children's children, let's take action NOW!
