I was living in Seattle and driving a school bus to make a living twenty years ago. As a young woman, I had a lot of experience and a Master’s degree, but I had to do such a job. I had been through five interviews with a company and one day they called to say I hadn’t got the job.
Later that afternoon, while driving in a quiet neighborhood, I thought, “Why has my life become so hard?”
“Help me. Give me a sign to help me out,” I requested in my heart. Immediately after that, I stopped the bus to drop off a little girl. As she passed, she handed me an earring (耳环) she had just picked up, saying I should keep it in case somebody asked for it. On the earring was printed “BE HAPPY”.
It hit me. I had been putting all of my energies into what was wrong with my life rather than what was right! I decided to make a list of fifty things I was grateful for.
At first it was hard, but then it got easier. One day I decided to up it to seventy-five. That night there was a phone call for me from a lady who was a manager at a large hospital. The next day, I went to the hospital and everything went very well and the hospital workers liked the advice I gave them on stress management. I then spent the next year leading training workshops all around Seattle. I finally succeeded.
Incidentally, the day after I found the earring, the girl asked me if anyone had claimed it. I told her no and she said, “I guess it was meant for you then.”
“The only attitude is gratitude” has been my motto for years now and it has completely changed my life.

Make sure you don’t miss Australia’s largest and most exciting kite-flying festival this year, which promises to be a great day out for the whole family. The skies will come alive with hundreds of kites of all shapes and sizes from local and international kite makers and fliers.
It’s not just the experts who can fly their kites — come down and fly your own. If you don’t have a kite, you can buy one from one of the stalls in the park, or better still, make one at one of our kite-making workshops.
Then there’s the multicultural entertainment program in the Pavilion Courtyard Amphitheatre of great music, dance and performance. The headline act this year is Rastawookie. Their music is a fusion (结合) of many different styles from South America, the Caribbean and western countries. There will also be free music and dance workshops, so why not try your hand at one of these? For the children there will be additional rides, face painting, jugglers (变戏法者), stilt walkers, and clowns. After all these activities, you probably can’t wait to eat. Choose from one of our fabulous multicultural food stalls offering food and drinks from all over the world or for something simpler — nothing could be better than a good old-fashioned sausage!

George Walton Lucas Jr. was born on May 14, 1944, in Modesto, California. His father was a stationery store owner and the family lived a peaceful suburban life. During his late teens Lucas was crazy about drag car racing. He planned to become a professional race car driver. However, a terrible car accident happened just after his high school graduation and ended his dream forever.
So Lucas attended the University of Southern California’s film school. In 1973, Lucas wrote and directed the semi-autobiographical (半自传性) American Graffiti which won the Golden Globe and got five Academy Award nominations (提名). Nearly one billion of the world’s people do not have an “adequate (足够的)” supply of water, and most of these people are in the world’s developing nations. The lack of water services is the cause of much disease and illness in the developing nations. Increased demand and greater use of water (caused by population increases) often create the need for extra water treatment because water from new source areas tends to be of lower quality. Water services would be improved if the construction of facilities (设施) were not so costly.
Water pollution in the developing nations is sometimes caused by overuse of fertilizers and a general lack of pollution prevention laws. Access to good wastewater treatment facilities in these countries is very limited. As a result, water bodies in the developing nations are often open to human and animal waste products. Besides, the waste chemicals of factories are also poured into these water bodies.
In the developing nations, floods account for about 40 percent of all deaths caused by natural disasters. For example, 3.7 million people were killed in a 1931 flood on China’s Yangtze River. However, floods also carry sediment(沉积物)and nutrients into flood plains. This natural process is important for agricultural production. Programs for flood management should consider and find a way to balance the harmful and beneficial aspects of floods.
Throughout the developing countries, deforestation (滥伐森林) is being caused by a combination of overpopulation, improper land use practices, and a lack of environmental laws. Soil erosion (侵蚀) is a natural process, but deforestation and other human activities have led to a five times increase in the average levels of sediment carried in the world’s rivers. Too much sediment in rivers can damage ecosystems and fisheries, affecting the people who directly depend on them.
67. Why is it hard to improve water resources in developing countries?
A. Because water from new source areas is of low quality.
B. Because the population in these countries increases very fast.
C. Because they can’t afford the high cost of building facilities.
D. Because they have to deal with more serious problems.
68. Which of the following is NOT a cause of water pollution in developing countries?
A. Pollution caused by industrial chemicals.
B. Pollution caused by human waste.
C. Farmers’ using too much fertilizer.
D. The breaking of pollution prevention laws.
69. What can we learn from the third paragraph?
A. Of the natural disasters, floods happen most often.
B. Floods do both harm and good to human beings.
C. The biggest flood in human history happened in China.
D. No agriculture production can go on after a flood happens.
70. The main reason for the increased sediment in the world’s rivers is ____________.
A. floods B. damage from animals
C. human activities D. soil erosion
71. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. Some problems of water resources in developing countries.
B. The importance of water treatment.
C. Water pollution in developing countries.
D. The help that developing countries need to protect environment.

When I decided to apply for a summer job, I was a freshman. After several attempts, I got an interview with Dave Hensley, a manager in the games department at Cedar Point Amusement Park. I was a very shy and quiet boy, but I put aside my shy nature for the interview, and was as outgoing as I knew how to be. Apparently it worked. I was informed (通知) to go to the park the next day. However, when I arrived, Dave told me he was assigning (分派) me to be a guesser. That position required standing all alone, speaking to thousands of people over a microphone. I never dreamed Dave would assign me to that position.
Dave must have sensed my fear as he said, “Don’t worry. I’m sure you’ll do fine.” Then he took me to the Guessing Game location in an area of the park. Along the way, Dave talked to me, trying to improve my confidence. He told me to just relax and be myself, and then the microphone was put into my hand.
My mind was disorderly, but I knew I wanted to work at Cedar Point, and that desire meant I had to make it. After thirty minutes, Dave took the microphone and gave it to another guesser. He turned to me and said, “Well, at least you’re not afraid of the microphone!” Thanks to Dave’s trust and encouragement, I went on to become a very successful guesser. His support in helping me overcome that fear improved my life in more ways than Dave could ever imagine. In that same spirit, I successfully completed my Master’s degree in electrical engineering which I had once wanted to give up.
72. In order to get the job, the author _______.

D. made the manager believe he was good at dealing with strangers

B. wanted to be a guesser all his life
C. could learn new things very quickly
D. wanted to be a person like Dave Hensley
75. By writing about his own experience, the author wants to tell us _______.
A. how to be a successful guesser as a freshman

书面表达(One possible version)
China has made great achievements in science and technology in the past over 30 years.
China sent its first man-made satellite into space in 1970, becoming the fifth country that had this ability, following the former Soviet Union, the United States, France and Japan. With this success, China started its exploration into space, and has become one of the major space powers in the world.
At 9:00 am on October 15, 2003, a spacecraft with a person named Shenzhou V was sent up into space from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in Gansu Province, which successfully landed early the next morning. At 6:05 pm on October 24th, 2007, China successfully launched its first lunar probe — Chang’e-1 lunar satellite, from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in southwestern Sichuan Province. I believe more achievements will be made in China’s space development.
