As a child, Li Xiaoyan liked his father’s work as a “barefoot doctor (赤脚医生)”, so he decided to follow his father to treat people in a mountain village in Gansu Province.
Li, 48, remembered his father always carried an old wooden medical box and was on call around the clock for his patients. On rainy days, he always walked through mud and water without wearing shoes from his home to his patients’.
“At that time, villagers depended on these ‘barefoot doctors’ when they were ill. Hospitals were too far away and expensive. My father would often offer free help to poor patients,” Li said, adding that the villagers usually gave his father fresh fruit and food to thank him.

二、思维导图复述
Hello, everyone. I’m John. It’s nice to talk about help here. In our life we often help others and also get help from others. When we help our classmates with their studies and other things, we can develop our friendship. If we give a hand to old people, we can understand the true meaning of happiness. In our life, patients are in need of help. When we help them, we
can know the meaning of pleasure. Sometimes, when we help some strangers in trouble, we’ll taste the feeling of being generous. What’s more, we’ll also get satisfied when we share in some housework with our parents. I think we can get much when we help the people around us. As the saying goes,“Giving is much better than receiving.”
