PART THREE : READING COMPREHENSION
A
Everyone has many different relationships. Some relationships are with family members, some are with friends and some are love relationships. Each relationship is different, and all relationships change over time as the people within them grow and develop. Most relationships contain a combination of healthy and unhealthy characteristics.
Healthy relationships have certain characteristics. Each partner feels whole without the other even though the two people enjoy being together. They communicate effectively and honestly. In a healthy relationship, both partners accept the other as he or she is. There are no unrealistic expectations or attempts to control the other person. In healthy relationships, changes on both sides are recognized and appreciated. Both partners have established healthy, comfortable limits based on their own standards. There is a balance between togetherness and separate lives of each partner.
Some relationships may contain unhealthy characteristics. One person may expect his or her partner to fulfill all their needs. One or both partners may be jealous and demand complete devotion. The desire to control others is another unhealthy characteristic. There may be a tendency to dominate the other person and the relationship. Selfishness may be a part of an unhealthy relationship. Those who are selfish only take care of their own comfort, pleasure and interest excessively but without regard for others. The last characteristic that may exist in unhealthy relationships is abuse, which involves emotional and physical mistreatment.
When unhealthy characteristics exist within a relationship, partners may choose to work toward making the relationship healthier. However, both partners must be willing to make efforts to overcome the negative characteristics of the relationship. Counseling services within schools and communities help families and couples strengthen their relationships. When problems within a relationship are not surmounted, one or both partners may decide to end the relationship.
21. From the first paragraph we can conclude that ______.
A. people live among many kinds of relationships
B. some relationships remain the same over time
C. there are various definitions of relationships
D. there are some similarities and differences between different relationships
22. All of the following are the characteristics of healthy relationships EXCEPT _________.
A. a balance between togetherness and separate lives of each partner
B. proper limits based on standards of both partners
C. attempts to control the other person if possible
D. a kind of honest and effective communication
23. The underlined word “surmounted” in the last paragraph probably means “________”.
A. discovered B. caused C. valued D. overcome
24. From the passage, which of the followings is most likely to make the relationships end
A Being jealous and selfish B Demanding complete devotion
C The existence of the unhealthy and unbalanced relationships
D Unwilling to make efforts to overcome the unhealthy relationships
25. The best title for this passage is “________”.

C. How People Benefit from Healthy Relationships
D. What Makes a Relationship Healthy
B.
When I was growing up in America, I was ashamed of my mother’s Chinese English. Because of her English, she was often treated unfairly. People in department stores, at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service ,pretended not to understand her ,or even acted as if they did not hear her .
My mother has realized the limitations of her English as well. When I was fifteen, she used to have me call people on phone to pretend I was she. I was forced to ask for information or even to yell at people who had been rude to her. One time I had to call her stockbroker (股票经纪人).I said in an adolescent voice that was not very convincing, “This is Mrs.Tan..”
And my mother was standing beside me, whispering loudly, “Why he don’t send me check, already two week late.”
And then , in perfect English I said : “I’m getting rather concerned .You agreed to send the check two weeks ago, but it hasn’t arrived.”
Then she talked more loudly. “What he want I come to New York tell him front of his boss.” And so I turned to the stockbroker again, “I can’t tolerate any more excuse. If I don’t receive the check immediately, I am going to have to speak to your manager when I am in New York next week.”
The next week we ended up in New York. While I was sitting there red-faced, my mother, the real Mrs.Tan, was shouting to his boss in her broken English.
When I was a teenager, my mother’s broken English embarrassed me. But now, I see it differently. To me, my mother’s English is perfectly clear, perfectly natural. It is my mother tongue. Her language, as I hear it, is vivid, direct, and full of observation and wisdom. It was the language that helped shape the way I saw things, expressed ideas, and made sense of the world.

C
Some people bring out the best in you in a way that you might never have fully realized on your own. My mom was one of those people.
My father died when I was nine months old, making my mom a single mother at the age of eighteen. While I was growing up, we lived a very hard life. We had little money, but my mom gave me a lot of love. Each night, she sat me on her lap and spoke the words that would change my life, “Kemmons, you are certain to be a great man and you can do anything in life if you work hard enough to get it.”
At fourteen, I was hit by a car and the doctors said I would never walk again. Every day, my mother spoke to me in her gentle, loving voice, telling me that no matter what those doctors said, I could walk again if I wanted to badly enough. She drove that message so deep into my heart that I finally believed her. A year later, I returned to school — walking on my own!
When the Great Depression (大萧条) hit, my mom lost her job. Then I left school to support the both of us. At that moment, I was determined never to be poor again.
Over the years, I experienced various levels of business success. But the real turning point occurred on a vacation I took with my wife and five kids in 1951. I was dissatisfied with the second-class hotels available for families and was angry that they charged an extra $2 for each child. That was too expensive for the average American family. I told my wife that I was going to open a motel (汽车旅馆) for families that would never charge extra for children. There were plenty of doubters at that time.
Not surprisingly, mom was one of my strongest supporters. She worked behind the desk and even designed the room style. As in any business, we experienced a lot of challenges. But with my mother’s words deeply rooted in my soul, I never doubted we would succeed. Fifteen years later, we had the largest hotel system in the world — Holiday Inn. In 1979 my company had 1, 759 inns in more than fifty countries with an income of $ 1 billion a year.
You may not have started out life in the best situation. But if you can find a task in life worth working for and believe in yourself, nothing can stop you.
31. What Kemmons’ mom often told him during his childhood was ______.
A. caring B. moving C. encouraging D. interesting
32. According to the author, who played the most important role in making him walk back to school again
A. Doctors. B. Nurses. C. Friends. D. Mom.
33. What caused Kemmons to start a motel by himself
A. His terrible experience in the hotel B. His previous business success of various levels.
C. His mom’s support. D. His wife’s suggestion.
34. Which of the following best describes Kemmons’ mother
A. Modest, helpful, and hard-working. B. Loving, supportive and strong-willed.
C. Careful, helpful and beautiful. D. Strict, sensitive and supportive.
35. Which of the following led to Kemmons’ success according to the passage
A. Self-confidence, hard work, higher education and a poor family.

Four out of ten women who diet end up heavier than when they started watching their waistline(腰围), a study revealed today. The research also showed that a large percentage of women start noticing the pounds creeping back on just 21 days after reaching their ideal weight.
Yesterday, Dr Ian Campbell of the Jenny Craig weight management program said: “In the UK 61.4 per cent of adults are overweight or obese. Successful weight management requires a long-term commitment in order to lose weight successfully and for good. Dieting can be a real challenge so setting realistic goals and remaining focused on them is important. Otherwise as this research shows, women could end up heavier than when they started.”
The “Food: Body: Mind” report was publicized by Jenny Craig who quizzed 2000 women aged between 18 and 65 who diet regularly on their attitudes, beliefs and behaviors around weight loss. Six in ten said they are currently on a diet and one in five women said they are on a “continuous diet”.
It found the most common triggers to start dieting was seeing their “reflection in the mirror”, preparing for a summer holiday or unflattering photos posted on social networking sites. Other popular reasons include comments by friends or relatives or their other half.
However, the study showed that one in ten give up within one day, while almost a fifth manage to make it to a week or more. The average is ten days. Many blamed pressure they put on themselves to lose weight too quickly for the weight gain, which leaves them with a bigger appetite than normal. Others blamed colleagues, who tuck into fatty lunches and snacks unaware of the effect it has on the dieter, while mothers who polish off their children's leftovers(剩饭)was another common cause of weight gain.

The temperature is rising again in the Arctic. The sea ice area has dropped to one of the lowest levels on record, climate scientists reported last week.
“The new Arctic Report Card tells a story of widespread and continued effects of a warming Arctic,” said Jackie Richter-Menge of the US’s Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory.
“This isn’t just a climatological (气候学的) effect. It impacts the people that live there,” she added.
Scientists concerned about global warming focus on the Arctic because that is a region where the effects are expected to be felt first, and that has been the case in recent years.
There was a slowdown in Arctic warming in 2009, but in the first half of 2010 warming was near a record pace. The monthly readings were over 4 degrees Celsius above normal in northern Canada, according to the report card. The report card was prepared by 69 researchers in eight countries.
Researchers said last winter’s big snow storms that struck some Northern countries were tied to higher Arctic temperatures.
“Normally the cold air is bottled up in the Arctic,” said Jim Overland of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. “But last December and February, winds that normally blow west to east across the Arctic were instead bringing the colder air south,” he said.
“As we lose more sea ice... warming in the atmosphere can create more of these winter storms,” Overland said.
There is a powerful connection between ice cover and air temperatures, Richter-Menge explained. When temperatures warm, ice melts. When ice melts it shows darker surfaces underneath , which absorb more heat. “That, in turn, causes more melting and on the cycle goes,” she said.
In September the Arctic sea ice extent was the third smallest in the last 30 years, added Don Perovich of the US Army Laboratory. He said the three smallest ice covers have occurred in the last four years.
6. Scientists care so much about the warming in the Arctic region because .
A.the climate in the Arctic doesn’t change much
B.global warming effects are most serious in the Arctic region
C.there has been a major decrease of Arctic warming in recent years
D.by studying the region they can make predictions about the future impact of global warming
7. Which of the following shows that the Arctic is getting warmer?
A.The surface of the sea ice in Arctic is getting darker and darker.
B.The Arctic sea ice extent has disappeared over the last 30 years.
C.The sea ice extent has increased to one of the highest levels on record.
D.Winds that normally blow south across the Arctic didn’t come until last December and February.
8. What does the underlined word “cycle” refer to?
A.Ice giving off heat when it melts.
B.Higher temperatures bringing more storms.
C.The cause and the result of the melting.
D.The life of the people living in the Arctic getting worse.
9. According to researchers what led to big snow storms attacking some Northern countries last winter?
A.Higher Arctic temperatures. B.The melting ice.
C.The cold wind blowing west to east. D.Cold air bottled up in the Arctic.
10. What is the main point of the article?
A.Last winter’s big snow-storms. B.Winds in the Arctic region.
C.Arctic warming and its possible effects. D.Changes to the life of people living in the Arctic.

Is language, like food, a basic human need Judging from the extreme experiment of Frederick in the 13th century, it may be. Hoping to discover what language a child would speak if he heard no mother tongue he told the nurses to keep silent.
All the babies died before the first year. But clearly there was more than language deprivation (剥夺,丧失). What was missing was good mothering. Without good mothering, in the first year of life especially, the ability to survive is seriously affected.
Today no such extreme deprivation exists as that ordered by Frederick. Nevertheless, some children are still backward in speaking. Most often the reason for this is that the mother is insensitive to signals of the baby, whose brain is programmed, to mop up language rapidly. There are critical times, it seems when children learn more rapidly. If these sensitive periods are neglected, the ideal time for acquiring skills passes and they might never be learned so easily again.
Linguists suggest that speech milestones are reached in a fixed order and at a constant age, but there are cases where speech has started late in a child who eventually turns out to be of high IQ.
Recent evidence suggests that a baby is born with the ability to speak. What is special about man’s brain, compared with that of the monkey, is the complex system which enables a child to connect the sight and feel of, say, a teddy bear with the sound pattern “teddy bear”.
But speech has to be developed, and this depends on interaction between the mother and the child, where the mother recognizes the signals in the child’s babbling, clinging, grasping, crying, smiling, and responds to them. Insensitivity of the mother to these signals reduces the interaction because the child gets discouraged and sends out only the obvious signals. Sensitivity to the child’s nonverbal (非语言的) signals is basic to the growth and development of language.
11. Frederick’s experiment was extreme because _________.
A. he wanted to prove children are born with ability to speak
B. he wanted his nurses to say another language
C. he was unkind to the nurses
D. he ignored the importance of mothering to the babies
12. The reason that some children are backward in speaking is most likely that _________.
A. they do not listen carefully to their mothers
B. their mothers do not respond to their attempts to speak
C. their brain has to absorb too much language at once
D. their mothers are not intelligent enough to help them
13. In paragraph 3, by “critical times” the author means _________.
A. difficult periods in the child’s life
B. moments when the child becomes critical towards its mother
C. important stages in the child’s development
D. times when mothers often neglect their children
14. If a child starts to speak later than others, he will _________ in future.
A. have a high IQ B. be less intelligent
C. not necessarily be backward D. be insensitive to verbal signals
15. If the mother seldom responds to her child’s signals, _________.
A. the child will be able to speak properly
B. the child will continue to give out signals
C. the child will invent a language of own
D. the child will make little effort to speak

Marley is a businessman. His business is freezing people. He works for a company in California called Trans Time. Trans Time freezes people after they die. Why does Trans Time freeze people Doctors today can cure many diseases, but they cannot cure all diseases. People still get sick and die. Maybe in the future doctors will have medicine for all diseases. Some people think so. They want Trans Time to freeze their bodies after they die. Maybe 100 or 200, or 300 years later, Trans Time doctors will bring the people back to life. The doctors will cure their diseases, and the people will be alive and healthy again.
People often ask the scientists at the Trans Time, “How will Trans Time bring dead people back to life ” They say, “We can freeze a healthy animal and bring it back to life. We think that someday it will be possible with human.” When they say “someday”, they mean years from now — maybe 100 or 200 years. How can Trans Time keep people frozen for 200 years
After a person dies, workers at Trans Time cool the body with ice and chemicals. When the body is very cold, workers put the body into a capsule (密封舱). They fill the capsule with liquid nitrogen (液氮). The temperature in it is 196 degrees centigrade below zero. Every two weeks workers add more liquid nitrogen. The liquid nitrogen keeps the bodies frozen.
Trans Time charges $21,000 to freeze a body and $59,000 to keep a body frozen. That’s $80,000 all together. It is a lot of money. But some people think that $80,000 is a fair price. It’s a fair price for a chance to live again, isn’t it

Part III Reading Comprehension (30 marks)
A
It was one of the hottest days of the dry season. We had no seen rain in almost a month. The crops were dying. Cows had stopped giving milk. The creeks and streams were long gone back into the earth. If we didn't see some rain soon, we would lose everything.
It was on this day that I learned the true lesson of sharing and witnessed the only miracle I have ever seen with my own eyes. I was in the kitchen making lunch when I saw my six-year-old son, Billy, walking toward the woods. He was obviously walking with great effort --- trying to be as still as possible. Minutes after he disappeared into the woods, he came running out again toward the house. I was very curious and then I went out quietly and followed him. I saw a tiny fawn(幼鹿) lying on the ground, obviously suffering from dry and heat exhaustion, lift its head with great effort to lick(舔) up the water in my beautiful boy's hand.
When the water was gone, Billy ran back to the house to a tap. Billy turned it on slowly and a thin stream began to flow out. It took almost twenty minutes for the drops to fill his hands. When he stood up and saw me, his eyes just filled with tears. “I’m not wasting,” was all he said. And it came clear to me: The trouble he had got into for playing with the hose(水龙头)the week before. The lesson he received about the importance of not wasting water. The reason he didn’t ask me to help him.
I stood on the edge of the woods watching the most beautiful heart I have ever known working so hard to save another life. As the tears that rolled down my face began to hit the ground, they were suddenly joined by other drops---and more drops---and more. I looked up at the sky. It was as if God, himself, was weeping with pride.
Some will probably say that this was all just a huge coincidence. All I want to say is that the rain that came that day saved our farm, just like the actions of one little boy saved another.

As any parent of a teenager knows, trying to stop them using their computer or mobile phone usually results in anger.
But perhaps such outbursts are not pure petulance(闹脾气).The symptoms young people experience when taken off their phones are comparable with those of drug addicts going ‘cold turkey’, a study claims.
Researchers found that 79 per cent of students suffered a complete media blackout(中断)for just one day reported negative reactions ranging from sadness to confusion and isolation.
The study focused on people aged between 17 and 23 in ten countries, including the UK, where about 150 students at Bournemouth University spent 24 hours banned from using phones, social networking sites, the internet and TV.
They were allowed to use landline phones or read books and were asked to keep a diary.
One in five reported feelings similar to an addiction while 11 per cent said they were confused or felt like a failure.
Nearly one in five(19% percent)reported feelings of sadness and 11 per cent felt isolated.Just 21 per cent said they could feel the benefits of being not connected to them.
Some students took their mobile phone with them just to touch them.
One British participant reported: ‘I am an addict.I don't need alcohol or any others --- Media is my drug; without it I was lost.’
Another wrote: ‘I readlly didn't know what to do with myself.Going down to the kitchen to pointlessly look in the cupboards became regular routine(日常事务), as did getting a drink.’
Susan Moeller, lead researcher of the University of Maryland study, said: ‘Technology provides the social network for young people today and they have spent their entire lives on it.
‘Some said they wanted to go without technology for a while but they could not as they could be ostracized by their friends.’
Claiming that technology ‘absolutely’ changed relationships, Professor Moeller added: ‘When the students did not have their mobile phones and other products, they did report that they did get into more in-depth conversations.’

Some of the kids have never felt sand under their feet or seen a seashell (海贝壳). Some have never even seen waves. It’s not that they live so far from the sea. They’re only an hour’s drive from the beach. Yet their summers mostly took place in city recreation (娱乐) centers.
Vince and Jeanie Hubach always wanted to share the sand with others. The couple grew up in small towns outside Philly and spent their childhood summers on Jersey Shore beaches. They founded and run an organization called Angels on the Atlantic that makes it easy — and free — for city kids to visit the beach.
The idea for it began 16 years ago. Vince was setting up pizzerias (比萨饼店) in poorer parts of cities like Camden. “Kids would be hanging around (闲逛) while I was working,” he said. “I’d say, ‘Why don’t you go to the beach ’ They just looked at me like they are thinking, ‘The beach ’”
Vince told those stories to Jeanie. “Without children of our own, we wanted to do something for these kids,” Vince said. In 2004, they bought an area in Ocean City. It came with a restaurant they ran as a breakfast and lunch place. It was their first try at running a restaurant, but a magazine named it one of the best places for breakfast. Within two years, they had got enough money and volunteers to start inviting kids to their space of public beach for a day.

Brazil is a federation that consists of twenty-six states and one federal district. The biggest majority of Brazil’s population belongs to the Christian religion and almost all of them are Catholics. This is something Brazil inherited being Portugal’s colony.
Historically, the country was a colony claimed by people from Portugal and this made Portuguese the official language. The Portuguese reached Brazil in 1500 and until that moment it was inhabited by semi-nomadic people. The Portuguese changed Brazil into a country of slaves until 1800, when Maria I of Portugal came to live to Brazil. The Queen did not stay long in Brazil, but during the 20 years of royal presence a lot of changes occurred: commercial ports to United Kingdom were opened; Brazil stopped being isolated from other countries. So at the moment of getting the independence on the 7th of September, 1822, Brazil already had the potential to develop. The Brazilian Empire, Pedro I, abolished slavery in 1888 in the face of Princess Isabel. A lot of European people started coming to Brazil and the industry of the country started working. In the 19th and the 20th century as it has been said above foreign people immigrated to Brazil and basically 5 million European and Japanese people became the residents of Brazil. The beginning of the 20th century was especially marked by the immigration of a lot of Asian people: Japanese, Korean and Chinese immigrants. As a matter of fact Japanese people do not immigrate a lot, and the fact that the Brazilian-Japanese people are the largest Japanese minority in the world does astonish greatly.
The majority of the cultural inherits of Brazil are actually Portuguese, due to the fact that Brazil was Portugal’s colony for a very long time. The southern states mainly consist of European population and the north and the northeast consist of a mixed population including Africans, Amerindians and Europeans. Most of this population is Roman Catholic. No other country in the world has the same amount of Catholics. The modern tendency of Brazil is the growing number of people calling themselves Protestants. Around 7.4% of the population don’t believe any god. Some Brazilians, especially in the northern states are mixed Africans who prefer following the traditional African religions. Only 1.8% of the population chose Buddhism, Islam or Judaism.
Though Brazil always tried to maintain democracy, it was failed several times by the dictatorship(独裁) of Getulo Vargas. This fact could not affect the political situation in the country.
1.. Brazil was ruled by Portuguese about ______.
A. 22 years B. 300 years C. 322 years D. 328 years
2..Who might block the development of Brazil
A. Maria I B. Pedro I C. immigrants D. Getulo Vargas

Is early childhood education really necessary Early childhood education primarily focuses on learning through playing to develop the child’s physical, sensory, communicational and social development.Early childhood education has become a concern of the government, who pushes poor children to be formally trained before they are old enough for Kindergarten.
There are good reasons for the government to push early childhood education.Studies have shown that orphaned children who did not receive good care and education become developmentally delayed causing failure in school, and even in life.Further studies show that poor children who take part in Head Start programs are more prepared for school, less likely to end up in Special Education classes, and are less likely to receive public help or go to jail.
There are also negative parts to putting a child in formal education programs too early.Time Magazine online explains that “the younger the child the less his chances of catching up with first-grade work.” I have personally witnessed many children of my generation who went to Head Start programs become frustrated and bored with school before they finished high school.Yet parents have been sure that the earlier the child starts school, the better off he or she is, so they push to start children earlier.
Actually while early formal education of poor children does show great gains in the early elementary years, studies also show that this head start is really a “false start”, as the gains are lost in middle and high school years. It seems that environment is a bigger factor on life’s success than early education.Head Start programs have not achieved its original goal in closing the achievement gap in poor and middle school children.Perhaps it is time to find other ways to close that gap.
6. The purpose of the government valuing the early childhood education is ________.
A.to develop the children’s communication
B.to give orphaned children good care and education
C.to get the children prepared for the kindergarten
D.to train the children formally and regularly
7. According to the studies, which of the following is True
A.Children with good early education may have a rich life.
B.The orphaned children are usually unhappy in their life.
C.Children without early education can do well at school.
D.Head Start programs are helpful to the poor children.
8. “the younger the child the less his chances of catching up with first-grade work.” suggests that _________.
A.the early childhood education is helpless to the child’s grade
B.it is good for the young children to receive early education
C.the early education can help the children follow the grade
D.the younger the children are, the cleverer they will be
9. The author’s attitude toward the early childhood education is _________.
A.puzzling B.objective C.indifferent D.approving
10. The main idea of the last passage is that __________.
A.the early childhood education is very necessary
B.Head Start programs have helped the children a lot
C.environment is the most important to life’s success
D.better ways should be found to help the poor children

Cheerleaders are part of athletic competitions throughout the United States. As their name says they lead the crowd in cheering for the team it likes best.
About five years ago, cheerleaders were considered to be simply entertainers. Today there is much more Cheerleading in <> which has become another form of athletic competition. Cheerleaders today are expected to be gymnasts and dancers. They are expected to be quick and strong. Many cheerleaders are better athletes than the boys and girls on sports teams. High school cheerleading especially has becomes more difficult. The students must be in top physical shape. They must be able to jump high, turn circles in the air and lift each other. Teachers say this is the result of the influence of college cheerleaders. High school students watch college football and basketball games on TV. They see how the cheerleaders throw each other into the air and perform difficult athletic movements. They want to do the same thing. There is one big difference between the two groups, however. College cheerleaders in <> are young men and women. The men do most of the lifting. At most high schools only girls are cheerleaders. It’s very difficult for them to hold others on their shoulders and throw them into the air. There are a number of ways high school cheerleaders are improving their skills. They are exercising and lifting weights to increase their strength. And they are attending camps during the summer holidays to learn new techniques. Cheerleaders test their skills by taking part in competitions against cheerleaders from other schools, just like other athletes.
Coaches at some high schools say this new kind of athletic cheer leading has caused some problems. They say girls who were soccer and basketball players are now competing for places on a cheer leading team. As more girls attempt to become cheerleaders, sports teams suffer from a lack of good players.

Section B (10 marks) Read the following passage. Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage.
(Reuters) — At least 115 miners were pulled alive from a flooded coal mine in north China after being trapped for over a week, eating bark to survive, prompting extremely happy officials to hail their survival a miracle.
Officials said 153 miners were trapped in the unfinished Wangjialing mine, belonging to two of China's larger state-owned firms in Xiangning, Shanxi Province, after water gushed (喷, 涌) into the shafts last Sunday.
Late on Sunday night and throughout Monday, the survivors were pulled out from a platform, where the rescuers had drilled a vertical hole to ensure oxygen in the water-flooded pit and send down bags of glucose (葡萄糖). Thirty-eight miners were still missing.
"It is a miracle," said Luo Lin, head of the State Administration of Work Safety. "The trapped miners stayed so firmly determined down the mine shaft, passing through eight days and eight nights to live." The workers also survived by eating bark from pine wood used in building the mines, Chinese television said.
The government had succeeded in encouraging thousands of rescue workers to pump out water and search for the miners. After that, the water level dropped low enough for rescue workers to enter the shaft.
It was rare good news in China's dangerous coal-mining industry, the deadliest in the world with thousands killed every year in floods, explosions, collapses and other accidents. Shanxi Province is the heartland of that industry.
Strong demand for energy and not strict safety standards have made China's mines often deadly places to work, despite a government drive to severely punish small, unsafe operations where most accidents occur.
Workers are tempted into (被诱惑去) the mines by wages that can be much higher than for many other jobs open to blue-collar workers and rural migrants.
China has consolidated (合并) or taken over many private mines, which has helped cut accidents. According to official statistics, the number of people killed in Chinese coal mines dropped to 2,631 in 2009, an average of seven a day, from 3,215 in 2008. But the deadliest accidents are not limited to private firms.
