Pandora
Pandora is an intelligent Internet radio site. Basically, as you listen, you can give each song a thumbs up or thumbs down. You can create your own radio station that only plays music you like. Benjamin West, the father of American painting, showed his talent for art when he was only six years of age. But he did not know about brushes before a visitor told him he needed one. In those days, a brush was made from camel’s hair. There were no camels nearby. Benjamin decided that cat hair would work instead. He cut some fur from the family cat to make a brush.
The brush did not last long. Soon Benjamin needed more fur. Before long, the cat began to look ragged(蓬乱). His father said that the cat must be sick. Benjamin was forced to admit what he had been doing.
The cat’s lot was about to improve. That year, one of Benjamin’s cousins, Mr. Pennington, came to visit. He was impressed with Benjamin’s drawings. When he went home, he sent Benjamin a box of paint and some brushes. He also sent six engravings(版画) by an artist. These were the first pictures and first real paint and brushes Benjamin had ever seen. In 1747, when Benjamin was nine years old, Mr. Pennington returned for another visit. He was amazed at what Benjamin had done with his gift. He asked Benjamin’s parents if he might take the boy to Philadelphia for a visit.
In the city, Mr. Pennington gave Benjamin materials for creating oil paintings. The boy began a landscape painting. William Williams, a well-known painter, came to see him work. Williams was impressed with Benjamin and gave him two classic books on painting to take home. The books were long and dull. Benjamin could read only a little, having been a poor student. But he later said,"Those two books were my companions by day, and under my pillow at night."While it is likely that he understood very little of the books, they were his introduction to classical paintings. The nine-year-old boy decided then that he would be an artist.

B.The beginning of Benjamin’s life as an artist.

If you need glasses to read this, you are among the majority of Chinese students. That’s because most students in China are short-sighted which means they can only see things close up and distant things will be blurry. Four-fifths of high school students wear glasses and now more and more children in primary school need glasses, too.
This epidemic of poor eyesight has two very simple causes: too much time spent indoors studying and too little time spent outdoors playing. Reading and writing for hours and hours, sometimes in poorly lighted rooms, causes eyesight to weaken. But students have to do this because there is so much pressure on them to succeed in school. And because they spend so much time indoors at school and at home, they have less time to spend outdoors enjoying the sun.
The sun, as a consequence, is important in developing good eyesight. Exposure to daylight releases a chemical in the eyes that prevents, or at least delays, short-sightedness. According to a study by Ian Morgan of Australian National University, Australian children and Chinese children have the same level of eyesight before they start school, but once they enter primary school, Chinese children only spend about an hour a day outside, while Australian children spend three to four hours each day in the sunshine. The result is that while about 40 percent of Chinese primary school students need glasses, only three percent of Australian children do.
Wearing glasses may not seem like a big deal. For some, wearing glasses can even be an opportunity to make a fashion statement. But poor eyesight at a young age can have serious long term consequences. As you get older, your eyesight can worsen and lead to things like macular degeneration(黄斑变性), a condition of the eyes for which there is no cure and which can eventually lead to blindness.
With all that in mind, don’t you think it’s time to give your eyes a break Try spending a little less time inside and go for a walk in the park, instead. It’s the healthy thing to do and your eyes will thank you for it.
28. What does the underlined word “blurry” mean
A. unpopular. B. unpleasant. C. unclear. D. unconscious.
29. How should the students protect their eyesight according to the passage
A. They should study less and less. B. They should stay longer outdoors.
C. They should wear sun-glasses. D. They should have a longer rest in bed.
30. It can be inferred from the passage that _____ is to blame for the poor eyesight of Chinese children.
A. the ever-worsening bad weather B. the ever-increasing burden of study
C. the ever-decreasing sunny days D. the ever-decreasing period of study time
31. What is the purpose of this article
A. To explain why Chinese students are poor-sighted.
B. To admire Australian children’s good eyesight.
C. To criticize the present education system.
D. To call on people to protect Chinese children’s eyesight
D
Are you having difficulty falling asleep Try drinking a glass of warm milk. If that doesn’t work, listen to some soft, beautiful music. Still no luck Try think about sheep jumping over a fence. If you are still awake, take a sleeping pill. People who take pills often become dependent on the drugs. So you lie awake knowing that the new workday will soon arrive. If you have been in such condition for at least one month, you may have primary insomnia(失眠症).
A new study has found that you might fall asleep more quickly and stay asleep longer if you try “cerebral hypothermia.” It is not a complex medical process. It just means cooling down your brain. Eric Nofzinger and Naniel Buysse from the University of Pittsburgh Medical School led the study. They examined twelve people who had sleeping problems. Twelve others had no sleeping problems. Each of them wore a soft plastic cap on their head at bedtime.
The caps had tubes inside filled with water. The researchers moved the water through the tubes and then changed the temperature of the water. Other studies showed that people who had sleeping problems often had more chemical reactions in the front of their brain. The researchers thought cooling down the brain might help.
On the first two nights of testing, the patients wore caps with no water. On the next two nights, the caps were worn, but the water was not cooled. Then the researchers cooled the water a little for another two nights. On the final two nights of the study, the temperature of the water was made much cooler. The researchers found that the water caps didn’ t help the patients until the temperature was about 14℃. Most of the patients fell asleep faster and slept better when the coolest water was moving around their head.
Dr Nfzinger and Dr. Buysse noted that this was only the beginning of the brain temperature study. But they believed they had discovered something important that needed more research.
32. The first paragraph is written to _________.
A. put forward the topic of the passage. B. explain how serious insomnia is
C. tell us the causes of sleeping problems. D. tell us the danger of having sleeping problems.
33. From the passage we know that “cerebral hypothermia” is actually _________.
A. a complex medical process. B. a psychological treatment.
C. a difficult scientific theory. D. a simple physical treatment.
34. In the study, researchers helped people fall asleep faster through _________.
A. increasing chemical reactions in the front of their brain.
B. making them feel safe with a cap on their head
C. lowering the temperature of their brain
D. asking them to drink water to cool down
35. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. The cause of the study. B. Some details of the study.
C. People’s reactions to the study. D. The function of the caps.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
No fight can end, and no friendship can move on, until everyone says these little words: I’m sorry. Sometimes, though, they can be difficult to say. 36
It’s not about winning.
Friendships aren’t like the Super Bowl, and there should never be a winner and a loser. When you start fighting with a friend, it may feel important that you “win” the fight by proving you’re right and he is wrong, or by making him be the first to apologize.
37
You may have heard the expression “His pride stood in the way.” It is usually used to describe a person who is so determined to be “right” that he lets an opportunity for happiness pass him by forever. 38 Remember: as time goes on, we usually forget who was right and who was wrong in a disagreement, and only remember the sadness of losing a friend.
Take the first step.
Are you sick of fighting Do you think this fight is just not important enough to ruin your friendship 39 You don’t have to take full responsibility for starting the fight, or even say that your feelings were wrong. But you should find something you did or said that’s worth apologizing for. Maybe you’re sorry that you let the fight go for so long, of that you overreacted to something your friend did. If you say you are sorry, it’s like an invitation for your friend to do the same. 40
Then try to be the first to apologize.
It’s about taking some responsibility for the argument.
Once you’ve both said it, you’ll both feel a million times better.
There are some special cases when you shouldn’t be the one to apologize first.
Here are some things to keep in mind.
Don’t let this happen to a friendship you care about.
Stop thinking about your pride.

The season I like best
Hi, everybody. Among the four seasons, I like autumn most. Not only is it beautiful, but also it's an enjoyable time when people enjoy their fruits of labor.
When autumn approaches, the beauty of nature is breathtaking with leaves turning into diverse colors of red, orange and purple. I'm always fascinated by its scenery. Besides, autumn provides us with an opportunity to feel the sweetness of laboring together with farmers. The thought of tasty fruits and fresh vegetables makes my mouth water.
So autumn is my favorite season. What is yours
My Favorite Season
As to my favorite season, I have a special emotion for autumn. When it comes, I really feel relaxed and joyful with the caress of its gentle breeze.
Autumn colors are so magical for me. Rippling amber fields, flaming scarlet tomatoes, glossy purple grapes, all represent hope and maturity. In autumn, I prefer rambling in yellow woods, listening to golden blades crumbling underneath my footsteps. I also enjoy watching reddish leaves spin in the wind and then scatter over the soil for nutrition of the land. I truly appreciate autumn’s quality. In my eyes, autumn is just a mature mother. Her love requires no return. Although she can’t speak a word, I can easily feel her sincerity and firmness are precisely woven into every corner of the splendid landscape.
I think autumn is the most beautiful season in a year. She walks by silently, with harvest of hope and happiness.
