The theme of the unit is about the future and tomorrow’s world. This unit provides a chance for students to gain a better understanding of the future and to imagine what they think will happen in the future with the rapid development of science and technology. Today’s lesson is the section of the project part of this unit. As we all know, project is the last part of each unit. In this project, the students should first read the two passages written by two famous science fiction writers and then they are expected to apply what they learn to write a science fiction. Purpose: I want to make good use of the multimedia. Some scenes will be displayed directly on the screen. Students will take great interest in the related content. It can also help to create a relaxed and active atmosphere in the classroom.
2.Give the students brief introduction to the writers.
Purpose: In this way, I want to broaden their horizon and develop their sense of culture.
3. Ask them to share some science fiction stories they know, so that when they write later, they can have more topics to choose from.Step1 lead in (5 minutes)Period1After reading the text carefully, students should answer some questions which are designed for the students to have a better understanding of the two science fiction stories. One is “ What do you think was the most thrilling experience during their journey?”
Another is “If you had a time machine, what would you like to see, the future or the past? Why? What would you expect to see there?”
Purpose: Give some chances for the students to express their feeling freely, which can develop their ability of speaking greatly. Also I think it’s my way to lighten this class.ExtensionPeriod1What elements make up a story?Based on the questions they solved just now, they can easily find they are Time, place, setting, characters, plot and ending etc. (5 minutes)Divide the class into two groups. Each group should read one of the stories again and find out the basic elements of each story. Purpose: when then write, they should consider these elements, which can help them organize their story easier. Step3 discussionPeriod1Ask the students to read some useful words and expressions in the passage aloud.
These key words and expressions gave the students some clue of how to write their own science fiction stories. From this step, the students may especially pay attention to the key sentence patterns and phrases, which can give them some references.(15 minutes)Step4 some useful words and expressions Period2Some useful words or phrases :
