Ruth Fremson: Through The Camera
Ruth Fremson has taken a lot of great pictures through her camera. She is a three-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize, America’s highest honour for journalism (新闻业), and
she has travelled to more than 40 countries for her work.
◆ What made you become a photographer
Ruth: As a child, I drew and painted all the time. When you are drawing, you examine the contours (轮廓) of objects, and you watch how light falls on things. These are skills that photographers use.
◆ How is your role as a photojournalist(新闻摄影师)
different from that of a regular photographer
Ruth: A photojournalist’s job is to document the news of the day and the reality of a situation. Instead of using words, I use pictures. Photojournalists do not change a situation. Other types of photographer sometimes put things in a certain way.
◆ What is your greatest achievement as a photojournalist
Ruth: In my opinion, my greatest achievement has been telling stories that helped the people within them because others saw the photos and became involved (参与的). Anytime someone learns something valuable because of a photograph that I took, I feel I have achieved something wonderful.
◆ What advice can you share with our readers
Ruth: Be a careful person. Many people take pictures quickly without considering things like composition(构图). This is why so many people have photos with feet or parts of heads cut off. Often, people are too far from a subject or too position is the main element of good, simple photography.
