Rachel Louise Carson (May 27, 1907 - April 14, 1964) was a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-born zoologist and marine biologist whose landmark book, Silent Spring, is often credited with having launched the global environmental movement. Silent Spring had an immense(巨大的) effect in the United States, where it spurred(激励) a reversal(反转) in national pesticide(杀虫剂) policy.

In Silent Spring Carson asked the hard questions about whether and why humans had the right to control nature; to decide who lives or dies, to poison or to destroy non-human life. In showing that all biological systems were dynamic and by urging the public to question authority, to ask “who speaks, and why” Rachel Carson became a social revolutionary(革命者), and Silent Spring became the handbook for the future of all life on Earth.
