It was a Friday morning. I felt too lazy to drive my car, so I called a taxi. The taxi arrived at my door at 6: 00 a.m. and I got into it. I was so busy looking for something in my bag that I didn’t pay attention to the driver. I just said, “Please go right now! I’m in a hurry!”
A voice replied, “Yes, madam! “
I was surprised when I heard a female voice. I stopped what I was doing for a second at the driver. The driver was a young lady of about thirty. It was my first time seeing a young lady driving a taxi!
The car was running smoothly towards my destination. It was quite a distance from my home. The driver was driving perfectly well. I had travelled in taxi many times, but I had never seen a young lady driver! I was curious(急切的) about the reason why she had chosen this job,so I started a conversation(对话),
“If you don't mind, can I ask you some questions “
“Yes, madam, no problem.”
"I guess you are well-educated.”
“Yes, madam, I have finished my education. I have done my MBA courses.” “Oh, wow! Why did you choose this job then, instead of going for a business or financial career ”
I could see her face in the rear view mirror(后视镜). She smiled and expressed her opinion. I was really surprised.
Very politely, she said, “I have been interested in driving since I was a child. I have realized my childhood dream. I do respect each and every job. I don’t mind whether a job is good or bad in other people’s eyes. I want a job where I can get satisfaction. I received offers from big companies but I preferred this one because I like it. Although I can’t earn much money from this job, I love driving! That’s it! “

Watching news about the environment on TV can make us feel sad. The problems seem so big that it’s difficult to imagine how individuals (个人) can do anything about them. Rebecca Hosking, however, thought differently.
Rebecca decided to do something when she saw something that made her cry — hundreds of dead birds in the Pacific Ocean(太平洋) because they had accidentally (意外地) eaten the plastic thrown into the sea. People throw tons of plastic into the sea each year! Beaches on Pacific islands that should have been the most beautiful places in the world were covered with plastic toys, drinks bottles, pens, cigarette lighters(烟头) — every plastic thing you can think of.
Rebecca decided that she had to do something. Back at home she thought about what she could do to help solve the problem of throwaway(丢弃的) plastic. In her hometown of Modbury, she asked local shopkeepers(店主) if they could do one thing to help. She asked them to stop using plastic bags in their shops.
Plastic bags are used everywhere in Britain — every supermarket every corner shop. The numbers are amazing. Britain uses nearly 17 billion plastic bags each year. And the bags can take hundreds of years to break down because they are chemical rather than natural, so each year the sea and the environment become more and more polluted.
To Rebecca’s surprise, the shopkeepers agreed and Modbury became the first plastic bag free town in Britain. Instead, shops offered reusable cotton bags or biodegradable (生物可降解的) bags.
Other towns followed Modbury’s example and towns around Britain and around the world are becoming plastic bag free. It won’t solve all of the world’s environmental problems but it shows ________________________________.

An old man,who works to build houses, was ready to retire. The employer(雇主)was sorry to see his good worker go and asked if he could build just one more house.
The old man said yes,but in time it was easy to see that his heart was not in his work.He turned to bad workmanship and used poor building materials. It was an unlucky way to end his working life. When the old man finished his work and the employer came to see the house, the employer handed the front door key to the old man."This is your house,my gift to you.”
What a shock! What a shame! If the old man had only known he was building his own house,
he would have done it all so differently. Now he had to live in the home he had built none too well.

Nowadays, crowds of tourists travelled to the campuses of Tsinghua and Peking Universities. “Tsinghua University opens to the public at 8: 30 a.m, however, many people start to line up at 3-4 a.m, because people who come at 6 a.m. may be too late and can only enter in the afternoon,” a guard told People’s Daily.
In fact, it’s not only Chinese universities that are overcrowded with tourists in summer. Cambridge and Oxford in the United Kingdom also come across the same problem.
According to the Guardian, the road in front of King’s College, Cambridge is usually filled with tourists, including Chinese schoolchildren in uniforms, before most coach (长途汽车) tours have even arrived.
Universities in the United States are also popular among Chinese tourists. Nine out of ten Chinese visitors to the US want to tour a university, according to a survey.
So why do Chinese tourists have such a big love for famous universities
One reason is that many parents hope to get their children accepted into a top university in the future, according to People’s Daily.
One of the mothers from Hunan Province said while walking her 14-year-old son around the campuses of Tsinghua and Peking universities this summer, “I brought him here to see what top universities look like and let him compare them with those of our hometown. I hope he can learn something and be inspired to come here to study in the future,” she told China Daily.
And it’s not just ambitious students and parents you’ll find touring campuses. A tourist of 31, who comes from Xi’an, visited tow famous US universities in 2014. “American universities are much more open than Chinese ones. There are no walls,” he told The New York Times, “I was excited. I felt this urge to have a free exchange of ideas with someone.”

Dinosaurs suddenly disappeared about 65 million years ago. There are a lot of theories on why they died out. And the most famous is the asteroid(小行星)theory.
Many scientists think that at that time a 10-kilometre-wide asteroid hit the Earth. It broke the Earth’s outer covering, and made hot dust fly into the sky. Then the hot dust caused fires, storms, acid rain, and even volcanoes. The great heat killed most living things.
The large amount of dust in the sky formed a layer so sunlight couldn’t reach Earth for months and the temperature became lower and lower. As a result, more dinosaurs died. Because plants could not grow without sunlight, they soon died. So if there were still some dinosaurs strong enough to survive, they had nothing to eat and so, died out.
A recent study shows that at that time two asteroids moving between Mars and Jupiter hit each other and sent many huge rocks to the Earth, including the ones that killed the dinosaurs.

It was very windy when I woke up last Tuesday morning. As soon as I set off for the airport, it began to rain heavily. What a special way to start a holiday!
While I was driving to the airport, the storm got worse. Suddenly, a huge flash of lightning struck a tree. It came straight down just metres in front of my car. The fallen tree completely blocked(堵塞) the road, so I was stuck. I tried to call for help on my mobile, but the line was dead.
I was sure that I’d miss my plane, so I turned on the radio and tried to get used to the idea. Soon there was a loud knock at the window. To my surprise, it was a young man in leather clothes. “Need a ride, sir ” He asked. My plane was leaving in an hour so I didn’t think twice. I took my bags, climbed carefully onto the motorcycle and shouted. “To the airport please!”

An old English saying says, “Laughter is the best medicine.” One person who certainly would have agreed with this is Norman Cousins.
Norman Cousins was the editor of a magazine called Saturday Review for almost forty years.
In the 1960s, after returning to the United States from a busy and tiring trip to Europe, Mr. Cousins discovered he had a rare disease.
In less than a week after he got back, he could not stand. Every move that he made was painful. He was not able to sleep at night. The doctors told Mr. Cousins that they did not know how to cure his problem and he might never get over the illness. Mr. Cousins, however, refused to give up hope.
Mr. Cousins thought that the illness could be caused by unhappy thoughts. He did not want to take medicine to cure himself. Instead, he felt that happy thoughts or laughter might cure his illness.
He began to experiment on himself while still in the hospital by watching comedy shows on television. Mr. Cousins quickly found that ten minutes of real laughter during the day gave him two hours of pain-free sleep at night.
Mr. Cousins left the hospital and he continued his experiment with laughter in a hotel. For eight days, he watched comedy shows on television, read amusing books and slept when he was tired. Within three weeks, he felt well enough to run on the beach for exercise.
After a few months, Mr. Cousins was able to carry on his work. He had laughed himself back to health.

As an English language teacher I have come into contact with many, many different nationalities. The People I teach English to come from very different backgrounds. I have also been fortunate enough to travel to different countries with my work: the USA, China, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Poland, the Czech Republic and Lithuania, to name just a few. You might think, then, that I would be well prepared for the challenge of meeting different cultures. 1 think I am quite well prepared, but I have had some interesting and surprising experiences. Here are some of the experiences which have made an impression on me.
Arab culture
When some Saudi Arabian students invited me to their house for a meal, we sat on the floor to eat. When I complimented an Omani(阿曼苏丹国) student on his smart coat, he offered it to me! It seems that is the expected response in some parts of the Arab World.
When I asked a Saudi student when his birthday was, he said he didn't know. I kept asking him the same question thinking he didn't understand, but the problem was that they don't celebrate birthdays in some parts of the Arab world.
Japanese culture
When I was invited for a meal by some Japanese students I was surprised that I had to take my shoes off before going into the house. I was even more surprised when I had to sing karaoke!
I have noticed that when I ask Japanese students a question, they often don't say anything in response until they have the answer. The silence is longer than we expect in English culture, where you normally make some kind of noise to show you have understood the question and you are thinking about it.
German culture
At first German students talked to me very formally, calling me"Mister Jones and using the polite form of 'you' . (In German and other European languages there are two forms of the pronoun ' you', one for people you know well and another for people you don't know so well, or people who are older or have a higher status than you)
I was surprised that German people thought it was OK to ask you how much you earn. We would only do that with people we know very well in England.
Chinese culture
We had a group of Chinese teachers here. They made their tea in their cups. Boiling water was added to the same leaves when they wanted another cup of tea. I found this interesting because we make our tea in a teapot, using boiling water. But new leaves or teabags are used every time we want another pot of tea. We drink it black or milk and sugar can be added to the tea, depending on personal preference.
I don't think the cultural differences I have experienced have caused any real
problems. They just make life interesting.
What does the author think about his experiences in foreign countries
What happened to the author when he complimented an Omani student on his smart coat
What was the author surprised at when he was in Japan
It isn't proper to ask people about their incomes in England, is it
Do you like the Chinese way of drinking tea or the British way Why

Dreams
"Last night I had an unusual dream. I dreamed that I was flying. When I moved arms up and down, I moved higher and higher into the sky. I felt as free as a bird,” ---Martha, age 35.
“I had a bad dream -- a nightmare -- that kept coming back . I walked out of my bedroom, and a monster came out and ran after me. One night, when the monster was running after me, I turned back and said .” Leave me alone!” I haven't had the dream again since then. “ -- Jason, age 14.
what do these dreams mean For thousands of years, people have tried to interpret dreams(释梦). Many modern dream researchers have come up with theories(理论)about dreams. They believe that dreams tell us what is going on in our lives.
Usually, flying is a positive(积极的) symbol in a dream. Flying in dreams means success, control, confidence, and “being on top it all”. So Martha, the person who had the first dream, may be in love or may have success at work.
Monster in dreams often represent(代表) fears. For Jason, the monsters may represent the adults who control his life. Or it may represent Jason’s fears about growing up. But Jason showed that he was able to conquer(克服) his fears.
Here are some common symbols in dreams.
Snakes: If you dream about snakes, there will be good changes in your life. For the ancient Greeks, dreams with snakes were the most positive ones. And dream interpreters still say the same today.
Big wave: Water in dreams often means emotional concerns. A big wave probably means an emotional worry. If you can guess the problem, you'll be able to solve it and be happier.
Teeth: If you dream that your teeth fall out, you may be worried about your appearance. Or it might mean that you have dental problems.
Falling: If you dream that you are falling, you may feel that your life is out of control. Slow down, and figure out how to solve the problem in your dreams.
So what are your dreams telling you
Martha had a usual dream last night, didn’t he
If you dream that you are flying in the sky, what may the dream mean
Why haven’t Jason had the bad dream again since then
How many other common symbols does the writer tell us in the passage besides the two examples at the beginning of the passage

Lauren studied environmental science at NYU(New York University), and it was during her student years that she began working towards a "zero-waste" goal. Today she has learned to make all of her own everyday eco-friendly products, such as toothpaste, shampoo, kitchen cleaner and so on. She also set up her own company, "The Simply Co", through which she sells her homemade products.
Lauren regularly writes about her experiences of a zero-waste life on her blog. Lauren admits that the past two years haven't been easy. “I stopped buying packaged products and began bringing my own bags and jars to fill with products at the supermarket," she explained.
“I stopped buying new clothes and shopped for only second-hand things. I said no to things like straws(吸管) in my drinks at bars, to plastic or paper bags at stores."
Even though the journey has been hard, Lauren's zero-waste life has been well worth the effort. Lauren says that she now saves a lot of money because she is prepared when she goes shopping and does not buy things that she won't use at all. She also eats healthy food because she buys fresh organic fruits and vegetables instead of packaged foods.
