2023届新高考英语二轮复习读后续写强化100题(7)
一、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When David was nine and Laura was twelve, the battles started. Before that, they got along great. Laura was always protective of her little brother, and he in turn, was very fond of her.
Maybe it was about needing space or demanding independence. Whatever the reason was, it drove my husband and me crazy. It would start over the smallest of excuses. One minute the house would be quiet, and the next they'd be shouting at one another. And on and on it would go. Until, finally, one of us would have to step in. And there would be a truce(停战)…sort of. At least until the next fight. Our once happy home was being turned into a war area.
One night, in hopelessness, we called the kids into the living room and told them how upsetting their behavior was. We asked them for ideas about how we could regain peace in the family.
We asked each of them to come up with a half dozen appropriate results that we could apply the next time they had a fight.
The following day we were presented with a list of results from each. Some even looked pretty good. Examples: Clean the other person's room; Do the dishes for the other person; Hug and make up, etc.
We decided to arrange those results around the edge of a board, and then we attached a spinning arrow(旋转箭头)in the middle. When you gave it a spin, the arrow would finally stop and point to one of the results. Then we hung the board up in the kitchen. We crossed our fingers, and waited.
It was amazing. Just the existence of the board, hanging on our kitchen wall, had an immediate calming effect on the atmosphere in our home. But it only took about ten days before peace was destroyed by another battle. So we called them both into the kitchen.
Para1.
We took the board down off the wall and placed it on the table._________________________________

In the same spirit, we ended up making boards with other themes._______________________________

二、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
At dawn, Taylor opened her sleepy eyes and looked out of the window at the foggy field below. “NO!” she cried, now fully awake. Buttermilk the cow was in Mama's daisy patch(雏菊地).
I must have forgotten to lock the gate last night, Taylor thought as she pulled a sweater over her head. Mama was planning to sell daisy bouquets(花束) at the fair next week, but Buttermilk was eating the flowers.
Taylor hurried outside and grabbed the lead rope on the wall. “Why can't you stay in the field ” she called to Buttermilk as she headed across the yard to the daisy patch.
Buttermilk still stood there chewing flowers. Annoyed, Taylor thought to herself, “When I grew up, I'll be an artist and paint pictures all day. I'll never own a cow. Too much trouble.”
Just as Taylor was about to throw the lead rope onto Buttermilk's collar, the family dog, Red, rounded the corner of the house. Startled, Buttermilk took off, tearing through the daisies and across the yard. She finally ran through the open gate and into the field.
"Thank goodness!" Taylor said as she closed the gate and secured the lock.
She turned to look at the flower garden, where most of the daisies were either eaten or trampled(踩踏).
Mama came out of the house. “What's going on ” she asked. She looked sadly at her garden.
"I forgot to lock the gate," Taylor said. “I'm so sorry.”
"I know you are." Mama sighed and gave Taylor a hug. “You learned an important lesson today.”
Taylor's heart was heavy as she went back into the house. She had to think of a way to make it up to her mother.

三、阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Usually, it's my dad who sings silly songs or tells corny(老套的)jokes around my friends. But a few weeks ago, it was my mom who played the embarrassing parent role.
While my mom and I were shopping, we ran into my teacher, who mentioned that the school didn't have a music teacher to help our class put together a performance for Winter Fair. And, right then and there, my mom said, "I know the perfect song and dance. I'll teach it to the kids!"
Before I could say "Please don't, "my mom had agreed to come to my class every morning at 9:30 for a week. Oh, and just to be clear, it's not as if she's a professional entertainer. My parents run a small grocery store, and the only singing my mom does is in the shower.
"Um, "I said on our way home, "are you sure this is such a good idea " "Of course!" she said. "If we want your school's Winter Fair to happen, people need to step up and volunteer. ""I know volunteering is important, "I said, "but couldn't you help out in Tex and Indi's kindergarten instead " She laughed. "Don't be silly. We'll have great fun!"
"OK, class", my teacher said at 9:28 on Monday. "We're going to stop silent reading a little early because a special guest is here to help us with a performance for Winter Fair. Let's all welcome Arizona's mother. "7
I looked up to discover my mom standing at the front of the room wearing a stupid snowflake hat. "I'm very excited to be here with you guys!" my mom said. "I'm going to teach you a fun little song-and-dance number I learned a few years back, when I did some theater in college. Here goes!"
Oh, please, oh, please, I said over and over in my head, let there be a fire drill(消防演习), or a morning meeting, or a power failure, or anything to stop my mom from completely embarrassing herself and me!
But apparently, my mom was not at all concerned about looking silly. She turned on some background music and started singing and dancing away.

Jimmy is an automotive mechanic, but he lost his job a few months ago. He has a good heart, but he always feared applying for a new job.
One day, he gathered up all his strength and decided to attend a job interview in order to support his family. His appointment was at 10 am and it was already 8:30. While waiting for a bus to the office where he was supposed to be interviewed, he saw an elderly man wildly kicking the tyre of his car. Obviously there was something wrong with the car. Jimmy immediately went up to lend him a hand. When Jimmy finished working on the car, the old man asked him how much he should pay for the service. Jimmy said there was no need to pay him, he just helped someone in need, and he had to rush for an interview. Then the old man said, "Well, I could take you to the office for your interview. It's the least I could do. Please, I insist." Jimmy agreed.
Upon arrival, Jimmy found a long line of applicants waiting to be interviewed. Jimmy still had some grease on him after the car repair, but he did not have much time to wash it off or have a change of shirt. One by one, the applicants left the interviewer's office with disappointed looks on their faces. Finally his name was called. The interviewer was sitting on a large chair facing the office window. Rocking the chair back and forth, he asked, "Do you really need to be interviewed " Jimmy's heart sank. "With the way I look now, how could I possibly pass this interview " He thought to himself.

Amy was a lovely girl who smiled a lot. One day, she was very excited because she was invited to a big birthday party on Saturday night. There would be music, dancing, food and lots of new people to meet. Amy knew she would have a great time, but she was worried about what she was going to wear.
All her friends at school were talking about it. So Amy wanted to have something new and special to surprise everyone. She rushed to the kitchen, "Mom, can I have some money to buy something new " said Amy, anticipating with a broad smile. Her mother hesitated, "Honey, I'm kind of busy right now. You could ask your granny for help and here is the money you need."
That was a good idea. Amy's granny loved clothes and loved shopping! After a while, Amy's granny drove her to the shopping mall. "Now," said granny. "Here we are! We're sure to get you what you want." Amy bounced into the mall, looking around curiously. In the first shop, Amy chose six things and went to the fitting room to try them on. When she came out, granny was waiting, smiling "Is there anything nice " Amy shook her head with a little worry. "No. The dress was quite nice, but it wasn't really special. I want something special, granny." Granny comforted gently, "I know you do, my love. It's a special party! Don't worry, this is just the first shop. There are plenty of e on!"
Amy and her granny went into every shop on Floor 1. Amy found nothing. So they took the escalator up to Floor 2 and began again, but failed. Then they took the escalator to Floor 3, starting to check again. But bad luck for Amy, she still didn't find her special thing. Lungs nearly burst. I struggled to lift my head out of the water. Inch by inch, my tired body reached the end of the pool.
The extent of my swimming career was purely recreational, while the competitive swimmers nearby thought nothing of the seemingly simple task of a 500-meter swim test. Pushing myself to finish what I had started, I could only think: why not take the easy way out
Earlier that week, I had turned in my first job application at a local pool. Overqualified, I was hired on the spot. However, the tasks were boring: helping confused visitors and measuring the height of children before they went down the slide (滑梯). I was capable of more.
So a swim test was required, establishing the mere fact that I was not completely useless in a pool. Midway, the manager administering the test remarked, "This looks really easy for you. Why aren't you applying to become a guard "
"The thought didn't cross my mind."
"Well, lifeguarding demands more responsibility, strength and respect. Thus the position pays $2 more per hour. Your swimming skills are strong enough. All you need to do is complete the certification."
Inside I was unsure of myself, but his words inspired me—You never know what you are capable of until you force yourself to do it.
Soon I passed the swim test. All left was to practice and learn first aid, CPR (心肺复苏), and procedures for different land-based and water-based emergencies.
Work started soon. A well-intentioned yet anxious feeling in me soon passed. Days, weeks, and months went by without incident; emergencies were rare. The skills and training I had so carefully studied and acquired seemed unnecessary.
Today appeared to be another uneventful day. However, shortly after the other guards signaled to the children to exit the pool, I noticed one boy was still in the middle while the others had climbed up.

七、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语 续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Just before we got married, my husband, Spode, and I bought the house from the Gehards, who were moving to Australia. As they couldn't take much abroad with them, they left almost everything in the house to us, among which were two bookshelves packed with thick books. I liked the fine furniture, the tasteful kitchenware and even the pictures on the wall but I didn't think much of the books.
On the day they handed over the house to us, we walked around in the house with the Gehards for the last time. They told us about the good times they had and the stories behind the objects in the house, giving me a sense of warmth of a family. When Mr. Gehard led us to the bookshelves, he said to us, "These are great books written by the great minds in human history. I hope you can read them." Though Spode and I were not much of bookworms, we promised him we would, because we knew we could make Mr. Gehard feel better that way. We could see that it was hard for him to say goodbye to the house as well as the books, both of which he treasured so much.
After we moved in, to keep our promise to Mr. Gehard, Spode managed to find some time each day to read some pages of those great books. It was not typical of him, because he was one of those who would rather spend most of their spare time before screens. Curiously enough, as time went by, his interest in the books grew gradually and he began talking to me about what he read with amazement. To find out what accounted for his newly developed fondness for those serious-looking thick books, I also picked one. Finally, we both found attachment to the books and made it a rule to read in the evenings. Reading became part of our life. Those books opened up new worlds for us, gave us new visions and enriched our life in many ways.

My wife, Megan, and I went out to dinner with an old friend who we had not seen in a while. There had been some talk of COVID-19(新型冠状病毒)on the news, but it was early in the outbreak and people were still going about their daily routines. Even though everyone in our group felt perfectly fine, we took precautions(预防):We washed our hands with soap, did not share food and had no significantly close contact.
A few days later, our friend called and told us that she had tested positive for the coronavirus. She had felt some mild symptoms(症状)for a day or so after that dinner and was able to be tested because she is a doctor. On the following day, I started to feel a little tired and my head was a bit cloudy. I decided to stay in the master bedroom away from the rest of my family. The next morning. I woke up with a 39-degree fever. That was when we realized that I might have caught the virus from our friend.
At once, Megan called our state's coronavirus hotline, who then called in our primary care doctor and the head of our local hospital system's coronavirus team. We explained that we had been in contact with someone who had been tested positive, and I was having symptoms. They quickly approved me to receive a test at an urgent care center located five minutes' drive from my house. The result made my heart sink — I was also tested positive, and the local hospital wasn't equipped with the facilities to treat my disease. As a mild case, I was recommended to stay at home and quarantine(隔离)myself.
Following the doctor's advice, Megan and I quarantined ourselves and our children. With my developed symptoms, I started isolation in the bedroom, and the only interaction I had with Megan was when she brought in food. Megan slept on a small couch in our home office away from the kids' rooms. She also minimized her contact with our kids in case she was carrying the virus.

What They Found Inside an Old Sofa Bought for $20 Was Life-Changing
In 2021, SUNY students Reese Werkhoven, Lara Russo, and Cally Guasti were living together in a small apartment.
They decided to furnish their apartment. The three had gone to a Salvation Army store to buy a sofa, and were forced to settle for an old, rather smelly specimen that none of them really liked, but was the only one that was affordable and would fit in their living room. That day, as they were testing out their new purchase, they noticed that something was making a crinkling noise inside the cushions(垫子). Upon further investigation, they discovered a few bubble-wrapped envelopes inside the sofa.
When they opened the envelopes, they were in shock. A large amount of cash was inside. As they continued to pick apart the piece of furniture, they discovered more and more money. Guasti said,"Just when we thought we pulled out the last envelope, we'd find another $1,000 a few minutes later."
After some time, the three roommates had unearthed a good $40,000 in cash. The fantasies of what they could do with all this money started flowing immediately.
However, they were quickly brought back to reality when they saw that there was a woman's name on one of the envelopes. That was when the moral dilemma started-what to do?Keep the money for themselves, or try to find the owner?
The three consulted their parents for advice, and the next day, Werkhoven got a call from his mom. She had tracked down the mystery woman and found a phone number.

When I was a boy of nine, I used to help Mrs. Long, a retired art teacher who lived across my home. She paid me very little for the help, but she taught me how to paint and promised me, “When Christmas comes, I shall have a present for you.”
I kept wondering what it would be. The boys played with had baseball gloves ice skates and bicycles. I hoped that Mrs. Long would buy any one of them for me
“But it would hardly be ice skates,” reasoned with myself. “An old woman like Mrs. Long wouldn’t know much about ice skates.”
I also ruled out the bicycle because she was just a retired art teacher in the local school and could not afford it. On my last day at work, Mrs. Long said, “You've been a very good boy. On Christmas Eve I'll make a present for you. Please come to my house and collect it.”
“Since she is going to have the present in her house, and since she will make it unquestionably, she is going to give me a pair of baseball gloves,” I thought. Actually, I became so convinced that could imagine myself playing baseball with my friends in those gloves.
A day before the Christmas Eve, I could wait no longer and presented myself at the door of Mrs. Long's house and said, “Can I have my present today, Mrs. Long ”
“I've been waiting for you,” she said, leading me into her house. She sat me in a chair, disappeared to another room, and in a moment stood before me holding a package which under no circumstances could hold a bicycle or a pair of skates, or even a baseball glove.
I lifted it from her hand and found it was extremely light. “What is it ” I asked with disappointment on my face.
“A kind of magic,” Mrs. Long said “It can give you whatever you dream of if you have learned how to use it.”

三、答案:
I can't imagine what would happen next. I closed my eyes, covered my ears, and shrank as low as I possibly could in my chair. After a few seconds, though, I gathered enough courage to uncover one ear and peek through a half-open eye. That's when I saw the expression of pure joy on my mom's face. Seeing she was having so much fun, I couldn't help smiling. My classmates clapped and cheered, and I heard someone say,"Wow!Arizona's mother is pretty talented!"
By the time of the Winter Fair, I was actually proud of her for putting herself out there for the sake of us kids. "I'm really glad you helped my class with the performance," I said to my mom as we drove home from Winter Fair. My mom reached back and squeezed my hand. "Thanks for saying that, Arizona. I can see why you might've been embarrassed, but I had such a great time." Her contented smile reminded me of my dear father and his silly singing in the car. Maybe I could let go of my own worries next time and just try to be happy that he is having fun being himself. After all, this is the kinder route for everyone involved.
四、答案:
Paragraph 1:
Then the interviewer turned the chair and to Jimmy's surprise, it was the old man whom he helped earlier in the morning. It turned out that he was the General Manager of the company and Jimmy was one of the applicants of his company. What a coincidence! Jimmy couldn't believe his eyes! He didn't know what would happen to him, so he kept silent!
Paragraph 2:
Seeing this, the manager said, "Sorry I had to keep you waiting, but I was pretty sure I made the right decision to have you as part of our workforce before you even stepped into this office. I just know you'd be a trustworthy worker. You have a good heart and I believe you can try your best to do your work. Welcome to my company! Congratulations!" Still surprised, Jimmy sat down and they shared a cup of well-deserved coffee as he landed himself a new job.
五、答案:
Paragraph 1:
After searching all the five floors, Amy still couldn't find what she really wanted. She bit the lip, hung the head and sighed "Am I never going to find it, Granny " Granny comforted gently, "Don't upset yourself. We can try again." So they spent another two hours, but in vain. Seized by a strong sense of depression, Amy couldn't contain her tears anymore and started to cry loudly. Granny passed a tissue to Amy and said, "Amy, I think you already have something special." Amy's eyes went big, asking curiously "Really "
Paragraph 2:
"Sweetie, actually, you don't need fancy clothes. A smile is all you need," Granny explained. Not understanding granny's words, Amy scratched her head in confusion. Granny added, "Your smile is the most special thing you need to wear. Everyone will be attracted by your lovely and confident smile regardless of your clothes." Amy nodded her head and smiled a bright smile to her granny as if to say "just smile like this, right " Finally, they went home happily without buying anything. It was granny's help that made Amy realize the importance of a smile.
六、答案:
Paragraph 1:
"Something must have gone wrong with him," I thought to myself. Sure enough, with a closer look. I found the boy waving his hands desperately. I quickly dived into the water, swimming towards the boy at full speed. By the time I reached him, he had sunk to the bottom of the pool, which filled my heart with fright and concern. I picked the boy up and headed to the poolside, keeping his head above the water.
Paragraph 2:
Having the boy on the floor, I put my ear to his mouth and my fingers at his neck. I could tell that he had no heartbeat and wasn't breathing. Every second counted! Without hesitation, I did first aid, performing CPR as trained. Other guards watching anxiously, I carried on, sweating. Suddenly, a stream of water burst out of his mouth and the boy coughed intensely. Seeing the boy regain consciousness, those around broke into cheers. Exhausted, I sighed with relief. I thought had I accepted that easy position, I would have been nothing but a bystander. I'm happy I didn't take the easy way out.

It was an old stamp with a picture of the Mississippi River bridge. Spode and I did some research on the Internet and found it quite valuable. We guessed Mr. Gehard must have used it as a bookmark and then forgot all about it. Something so valuable was certainly not what we could keep for ourselves.
Paragraph 2:
But as we had lost touch with the Gehards, how could we return the stamp to them We posted our story on social media, hoping they could read it by any chance. The story spread rapidly overnight. We got thousands of responses, among which was one from Mr. Gehard, saying "You can keep the stamp as a gift from us for reading the books. It brings delight to my wife and me that the books are in good hands." Not until then did I realize what those books meant to the Gehards.

Later that day, the three friends drove to the woman's house to return the money. Suddenly, curiosity replaced my initial disappointment. Her words were enough to set my mind dancing with all kinds of possibilities. The pictures were so beautiful that I fell in love with them immediately.
It was not until some years later that realized the real importance of the gift. It was much more significant than a baseball glove or a pair of skates, which would just satisfy temporary desire.
