A MOTHER’S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

二、阅读下面短文, 根据所给情节进行续写, 使之构成一个完整的故事。
The decision to have Chase's teeth corrected had been a difficult one for his mother, Cindy. Having been divorced for five years, she was the only provider for her young son. Little by little, she had saved up the $1,500 required to have the teeth corrected.
Then one sunny afternoon, Chase fell in love. Chase and his mother had gone to visit the Rakers, who were old family friends, at their farm about 50 miles away. Mr. Raker took them out to the stable and there she was. Her name was Lady, and she was everything a beautiful mare(母马) should be. Chase had his first taste of horsemanship and there was an instant attraction between them.
"She is for sale, if you want to buy her," Mr. Raker told Cindy. "For $1,500 you get the mare." For Cindy, it was a big decision. The $1,500 she had saved would fix Chase's teeth or buy Lady for Chase, but it wouldn't do both. Finally, she determined that getting the braces(牙箍) was the best long-term decision for Chase. It was a tearful decision for both mother and son. But Cindy promised to take Chase to the farm to see Lady and ride her as often as she could.
The summer was long and dental work was painful for Chase. The only shining moments of Chase's life that summer came when his mother took him to ride Lady. There, he was free and happy. Each time they left the farm, Chase feared that this might be his last look at the mare. Lady was, after all, for sale, and the market was good.
Another Saturday, his mother took him to the Rakers' to ride Lady again. As they drew closer to the farmhouse and stable, Chase looked around anxiously, but Lady was nowhere to be seen. He got out of the car and ran up to the front door of the house. No one answered the doorbell. While his mother sadly looked on, Chase ran to the stable, but it was empty.

When Micah was a child, I used to do many things with her. Later, I got promoted and was always on constant business holidays. 3 years' devotion to work resulted in my absence from her life and now she was a teenage girl. Recently, I eventually managed to have abundant time to accompany her.
For the last few weeks, Micah had watched mockingbirds make a nest in a tree and lay eggs there. Sometimes, I came to accompany her without being invited. But whenever I made an attempt to break the ice, “I'm good” was about all she said to me. Code for “Leave me alone”.
“Why doesn't she want to do things with me ” I thought as I set the table for dinner one evening, hoping for an emotion bridge to reappear between us. Did she feel hurt with my long absence or feel ignored Lost in thought, I was seeking to mend the relationship.
“Mom!” Micah yelled suddenly. “Come quick!”
Surprised, I rushed out, only to find a little baby bird on the ground, weak and helpless. My eyes went to the branches above.
“The wind must have blown him out of the nest,” I said.
“No, it was Mr. Whiskers-- our cat. You let him go outside!” Micah said, a bit annoyed.
Looking at the nest without the parents, “I'm sorry,” I said and put the bird in my palm cautiously and gently. She didn't respond, but did not refuse my offer to help, either. Deciding to take care of the little baby till it became independent, I placed it in its nest. “What should we do next ” I asked. No response again. Instead, Micah went inside and hopped on her iPad. “Bird videos ” I asked. “Yes, I'm finding out what to feed it,” she said seriously.

A pleasant surprise
For a long time, I had been looking for a piano of my own to practise on. There was a piano shop on the street along which I walked every day to school. Whenever I passed the shop, I would stop, looking at the beautiful piano standing in the comer of the shop window. How I had been dreaming, day and night to possess a piano like that!
Unfortunately, my father was just a clerk. Times were tough during the Depression, and there were five mouths to feed, besides buying coal and wood for the stove. In order to save money, even on cold winter days, my father would walk the seven miles every day to get to work. No he could never afford to buy me an expensive piano. Though he knew I wanted to play that piano so much buying it was an extravagance (奢侈品) well beyond our family’s income.
One day after school, I went as usual to the shop window to look at the piano. However, to my surprise and disappointment, the piano had gone. I should not have been surprised as others had the right to buy it, if they could afford to. Tears filled my eyes when I thought of not being able to sec that piano any more.
Disappointed, helpless and sad, I wandered aimlessly up and down the street. After about an hour. I returned home. I had just entered into our house, when I heard my mother calling me. I brushed away my tears and followed the sound of her voice into the dining-room.

Let him learn the hard way
Paul was with me in the kitchen helping me out with the dishes. From his facial expression and his unmistakable body language I knew he wanted to ask something. Paul is doing his second year in a famous high school. I have always been afraid of spoiling him with my love as he is my only child.
We are well placed in life. Both of us—my husband and I—are Human Resource executives(主管领导). As I was about to switch off the kitchen light, Paul came near me with pleading eyes. "Mom, our school is organizing a trip to the Yellowstone National Park this time. They are charging only $200 per student, which covers all expenses—train tickets, food and the stay. Mom, please, please let me go. You have more than a month's time to pay the money. And we are going only in our holidays."
I did not know what to say. My motherly nature was to say an immediate yes to see a smile on my son's face, but I should not spoil this nice kid. So, I said to him, "Paul, I need to talk to Dad. Can I tell you tomorrow morning "
"Thanks, Mom."
After talking with my husband, we agreed to let him go but made him earn the money.
"Paul, Dad and I thought about your trip. Yes, in principle it's okay for us. But you have to earn money for it. You said that you have more than a month to pay the money."
"Thanks a lot, Mom. I shall surely save the money well before the due date."
"And Paul, I would like to know the progress you make every day. So, let me know how much you get on a day-to-day basis. You shall write that on this board, okay "
"Okay. Mom. Thanks once again."

A couple, whom we shall call John and Mary, had a nice home and two lovely children. One day, John and Mary decided to go on a trip to another city, so they got a kind woman to look after the children and left.
Several days later, they returned home a little earlier than they had planned. As they drove back to their hometown, John and Mary noticed smoke and went to see what it was. They found a house was on fire. "Oh, well, it isn't our house. Let's go home," Mary said.
But John drove closer and screamed in surprise, "That's Jordan's home. He works in a factory. He wouldn't be off work yet. Maybe there is something we can do to help."
"It has nothing to do with us," cried Mary. "You have your good clothes on, so let's not get any closer."
John didn't listen to Mary. He drove up and stopped. They were both shocked to see the whole house was on fire. A woman was crying in the yard, "The children! Get the children!"
John seized her by the shoulder and shouted to her, "Don't cry! Tell me where the children are!" "In the basement (地下室)," cried the woman, "down the hall and to the left"
John used water to get his clothes wet and put a wet towel on his head before rushing to the basement. The house was full of smoke and fire, and it was very difficult for him to find the children. But he made it. He held one under each arm. As he left, he could hear some more crying. He took the two kids out of the house and into the fresh air, and then asked the women how many more children were still down there.

"Madam! I did not get you "
"I need some tools. Can you show me the varieties "
"Oh! Madam, why do you come without the knowledge of the tool " Henry felt annoyed.
"How come you are the salesperson without having the art of listening to the customers " She complained.

九、阅读下面短文, 根据所给情节进行续写, 使之构成一个完整的故事。
Seth, Rebecca, and Jesse developed a bond that made them more like families than mere friends. They were there for each other in the good times and the bad. When Rebecca's mother passed away, Seth and Jesse came to help with the funeral arrangements. When Seth was unemployed for a couple of months, Jesse and Rebecca picked up the bill for his room. When Seth tried to repay them after landing a good job, Rebecca and Jesse refused. "Oh, we'll get the money back someday when we're in trouble, believe us. We won't forget," they insisted. But Seth knew they would.
On a weekend in early spring, Jesse decided to take a trip alone to the Smokies. He was going through some soul-searching and felt sure he would find answers in the seclusion(与世隔绝) of the mountains. He called Seth and Rebecca to let them know he was going, and then set off on his trip on Friday night.
On Sunday night, when Jesse should have returned home and normally would check in with his friends, Seth and Rebecca thought it was strange not to hear from him. They sensed that something was wrong, so they both arranged to take time off work and headed for Tennessee. When they arrived they immediately informed the authorities. The two friends had to work to convince the rescuers that Jesse wouldn't have just moved on to another location or extended his trip without telling them and that something had to be terribly wrong.
After a series of phone calls confirming that Jesse had not been in contact with his family either, search and rescue teams were organized and sent out. The Forest Service launched a massive effort, but no one could find Jesse. Days went by. Seth and Rebecca were extremely tired and worried, and by Wednesday evening the authorities decided to call off the search. Experts felt certain it was too late. All hope that Jesse was alive somewhere in those mountains was gone...except for the hope in Seth's and Rebecca's hearts.

十、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I'm an English self-learner, but English is not my first language. Today I am an English teacher. I would like to say that failures are not disastrous. Have faith, keep moving on, and never give up hope, and you will see your hard work pay off.
I was a slow learner when I was little. Before five, I couldn't even speak in full sentences. Unlike most other children, I seldom interacted with others; I neither cried nor threw tantrums. My extreme quietness made my parents wonder if I was mentally slow, but they were not sure. Actually, I have to confess that my memories of my early childhood are quite unclear.
My learning problems were the result of my mother taking some medicine when she became pregnant with me. Although I was born without any physical defects (缺陷), the medicine did affect my early intellectual development. When I was in elementary school, I learned very slowly and was as quiet as a doll. While my teacher was teaching, my mind often wandered outside the classroom to the playground. As a fifth grader, I finally started interacting with my classmates. That was the first time in my memory that I had had some friends.
After heading at full speed for my junior high education, my learning situation got stuck in the mud again. In my country, students entering junior high school had to take an IQ test. It was a test for schools to evaluate students' learning abilities so that they could arrange them into different levels of classes based on their IQ test scores. I was placed in the "bottom class" as a result of my below-average IQ score. Most of my teachers taught us using easy and slow methods because they considered us incapable of learning much. However, I never wanted to lose faith that I might one day succeed. To prove that when God closes a door, he will definitely open a big window, a miracle occurred. That's when I discovered a strong passion for English.

答案以及解析
一、答案:
As the twins looked around them in disappointment, their father appeared. Father’s appearing was like a savior to the two children. Under the guidance of their father, they took positive actions and started all over again. They made the bread and then went on cooking porridge. Father helped them adjust the fire, which was the key to success. It was all right this time. Delicious breakfast was ready. How happy they were!
The twins carried the breakfast upstairs and woke their mother up. When their mother saw the delicious and perfect breakfast in front of her, she was very surprised. It was not only the gift, but the love of the children for her that moved her very much. The two children could finish cooking a breakfast, which she didn’t expect. The children said loudly, "Happy Mother’s Day!" Mother hugged them tightly and kissed them again and again.
二、答案:
Paragraph 1:
His worst fear had become a reality. Chase began to feel an emptiness in his heart. Someone had surely bought the horse, and he would never see her again. With tears streaming down his cheeks(with复合结构), Chase returned to the car. On the drive back home, both Cindy and Chase sat quietly with their own thoughts. The wound of losing his friend would be slow to heal. Head bowed and eyes closed(独立主格结构), Chase only hoped that the mare would find a good home with someone to love and take care of her.
Paragraph 2:
When Chase finally looked up, their car had stopped in the driveway and Mr. Raker was opening Chase's door. "How much money have you saved up, Chase " He asked. This could not be real. Chase rubbed his eyes in disbelief. "Seventeen dollars," he answered in a hesitant voice. "That's just what I want(表语从句) for this mare," smiled Mr. Raker. The transaction that followed(定语从句) finished quickly. In only moments, the new, happy owner climbed onto his beloved Lady. They were soon out of sight around the house, heading for the open area beyond(现在分词短语作状语).
三、答案:
She was more focused than ever. Soon, Micah smiled broadly, “I’ve got it.” “What do we need ” I asked again. She said the baby bird needed some special bird food. Hearing this, I immediately phoned to place an order. While waiting for delivery, Micah added that we needed to name the bird to build a bond. “How about Chance I think it has a good chance of making it with your help,” I proposed. She didn’t say a word but nodded with a bright smile.
Before long, the bird food was delivered and we fed the bird “Chance” at once. To our relief, the special food was to its taste. The following weeks, we went to feed and check on Chance every day. One day, Micah shared with me happily her finding that Chance became independent. Looking at her shining face, I was almost moved to tears. I never imagined that the bird Chance became the real chance to rebuild the emotion bridge between us. From then, I decided to accompany her more, just as what we had done to pany is the best love. 六、答案:
I started keeping track of the money he made every day. When I gave him pocket money two days later, he set aside the entire amount for the trip. He had lunch with just $2 or $3 every day and saved about $1 a day. Seeing the amount go up day by day(现在分词短语作状语), I felt both relieved and worried. As a matter of fact, many a time did I want to just hand over the money and say "Go ahead and enjoy"(部分倒装). But I told myself that I was doing this only for his good.

In addition to reading English textbooks, I have already developed a good habit of reading English magazines, listening to English programs, and keeping a diary in English. What's more, I have accumulated quite a lot of vocabulary, which has greatly expanded my horizons. No matter how hard my learning environment was, I could see a light of hope and continue to keep moving on and never give up. Although I frequently experienced many problems in my studies, I tried my best to overcome them. With over 10 years of English self-study, my hard work paid off and I eventually became an English teacher.
