Shrieking Toad and Dancing Ant
Kids got nicknames at a summer camp, and mine was Shrieking Toad(尖叫的癞蛤蟆). I guessed it was my fault that I couldn't get a cool one.
A bunch of us campers were on our first nature walk. When we broke for lunch, we sat down on logs. I was on my nuts when a tree frog dropped onto my shirt from the branches above. I shrieked. It was totally unconscious and I didn't even know I could make a sound like that. Most kids forgot about it except Stan. Whenever I walked by, he'd shout, "Shrieking Toad, show us how you can hop!" I corrected him and said that it had been an eastern gray tree frog, not a toad, but that just made things worse.
Three days later, Counselor Matt announced we would be paired for a treasure hunt. Excited whispers spread through the camp. But when he read Jay and Stan" as a team, it got on my nerves. Stan shouted "Great! Shrieking Toad!" Then he called to the group, and I went red at what came out of his mouth. "Guys, if mosquitoes are bugging you, ask Shrieking Toad to eat them. Toads love bugs!" Kids roared with laughter.
After all the teams wandered off, Stan and I were alone. Then I had a great idea, surprising myself that I hadn't thought of it earlier. I suggested we split up so as to have a better chance of finding treasures. "Yeah, I'd better do what I'm toad (told)." Stan laughed and set off.
Ten minutes later, I heard something that reminded me of myself a few days ago. I ran toward the sound. I would never have believed it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes. Stan was jumping around near a mud pool like a monkey, shrieking and yelling something that sounded like "Dance! Dance!" Seeing him scratching at his body and hitting his clothes made me realize what he was really saying, "Ants! Ants!"

It was last February. Noel, a 28-year-old marketing manager was heading from Iceland's Keflavik Airport to the capital city Reykjavik with the modern traveler's two essentials: a dream and a GPS unit. What could go wrong
The dream had been with him since April 14, 2010 when he watched TV news report of the volcano eruption in Iceland. Dark-haired, with a youthful face and thick eyebrows, he had never travelled beyond the United States and his native Mexico. "I want to see this through my own eyes," he thought as he watched the news on his couch.
On a cold winter morning, he was driving from Keflavik Airport in a rented car towards a hotel in Reykjavik, excited that his one-week journey was beginning. As the pink sun rose over the ocean and shone light on the snow-covered lava rocks along the shore, he dutifully followed the commands of the GPS that came with the car, a calm female voice directing him to an address.
But after stopping on a deserted road, he got a feeling that the voice might be steering(引导) him wrong. He had been driving for nearly an hour, yet the GPS put his arrival time at around eight hours later. He entered his destination again and got the same result. Though he sensed that something was wrong, he made a choice to trust the machine.
The farther he drove, the fewer cars he saw. The roads became icier. He was sleepy, cold and hungry. He hadn't set up his phone for international use, so that was no help. Another three hours passed. As his tires skidded(打滑) along a narrow mountain road that skirted a steep cliff, he knew that the device had failed him.
He was lost. He didn't know where else to go. There was no one else on the road, and there was nothing else to do but follow the line on the screen to its mysterious end.

It was a summer morning. The sun was out in full splendor against a nearly cloudless light blue sky. "Mamma," said Susie Dean, a 11-year-old girl, may I go to the woods and pick berries " Mrs. Dean replied, "Yes, but you must take Rover with you.
Susie swiftly got everything ready, and her mother packed a nice lunch for her. She tied the cover and fastened a tin cup to it. The little girl called Rover - a great Newfoundland dog, and gave him a tin pail (锡桶)to carry. “If I bring it home full, Mamma,” she said, “won't you make some berry cakes for tea ”
Away she tripped, singing as she went down the lane and across the pasture. When she got to the woods, she put her lunch basket down beside a tree and began to pick berries. Rover ran about, chasing a squirrel or a rabbit now and then, but never straying far from Susie.
The tin pail was not a very small one. By the time it was two thirds full, Susie began to feel hungry and thought she would eat her lunch. Rover came and took his place at her side the moment she began to eat. Did Susie give him some of the lunch No. She was in a selfish mood and did no such thing.
"There, Rover, run away!" she said, but Rover stayed near her, watching her steadily with his clear brown eyes. The meat he wanted so much was soon eaten up, and all he got of the nice lunch was a small crust of gingerbread that Susie threw away.
After lunch, Susie played for a while by the stream. She repeatedly threw sticks into the water, and Rover swam in and brought them back. Then she began to pick berries again. She did not enjoy the afternoon as she did the morning. The sunshine was as bright, the berries were as sweet and plentiful, and she was neither tired nor hungry. But good, faithful Rover was hungry, and she had not given him even one piece of meat. She tried to forget how selfish she had been, but she could not do so, and quite early she started for home.
When she was nearly out of the woods, a rustling in the underbrush attracted her attention. "I wonder if that is a bird or a squirrel," she said to herself. "If I can catch it, how glad I will be!" She tried to make her way quietly through the underbrush.注意:1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右:2.至少使用5个短文中标有下划线的关键词语:3.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好:4.续写完成后,请用下划线标出你所使用的关键词语。Paragraph 1:

December 5,2012, was a very special day for Josephine and Scott Lansing, as it marked the fourth adoption for the Lansings.
When they began the journey to adopt their first daughter, Cloe, years ago, Josephine and Scott Lansing never imagined they would eventually have a house full of girls. The couple later adopted Josie in 2011 and Annabelle in 2012.For the Lansing family, adoption is about giving every child the opportunity to grow healthily in a loving home. Scott and Josephine are great advocates for each of their daughters, and they make sure each child knows how special and loved they are.
In February of 2009, Bethany entered into the care of Child Protective Services due to her mother's inability to care for her and her brothers and sisters. Her experiences made it very difficult for her to trust adults, since she learned from an early age that she could only count on herself. She lived in a shelter for several months before moving into a foster home (寄养家庭). Still, Bethany struggled to understand why she had been taken away from the only family she had known. In May of 2010, Bethany was placed at Helping Hand Home for Children's Residential Treatment Center, where her journey to returning to normal finally began. With the patience, support, and guidance of the Helping Hand Home staff, Bethany developed healthy, appropriate ways to express her emotions. She was taught to respect herself, and she learned that it was okay to trust others.
When Bethany was introduced to the Lansing family in June of 2012, the meeting did not go as smoothly as everyone hoped. Bethany's insecurities resurfaced due to the suffering she experienced at such a young age, and she refused to talk or even look at the Lansings at their first meeting.

I was a single mother in my 30s who lived down and out with my daughter Peggy in a small apartment, struggling hard to make both ends meet.
One day, I headed to the downtown for an interview. I sat down in the streetcar, and there against the seat was a beautiful silk umbrella with a silver handle decorated with gold scrolls, among which there was a carved name.
On impulse (冲动), I determined to find the owner myself. I got off the streetcar in the heavy rain and thankfully opened the umbrella to protect myself. Then I searched a telephone book for the name, and I found it immediately and called it, waiting patiently, and then a lady answered.
"Yes," she said in surprise, with extreme excitement, "it is my umbrella which was stolen a year ago."
So appealing was her pleasure that I forgot I was looking for a job and went directly to her small house. She took the umbrella, with teary eyes, explaining with choking voice that the umbrella was given by her parents, now dead. Her happiness at retrieving (找回)this special possession was such that to have accepted her reward would have spoiled something, so I refused her offer and left.
The following months were hard. I could only obtain temporary employment, for a small salary. What was worse, I had just lost my last job before Christmas, with only fifteen dollars left. Unless a miracle happened, I would be homeless in January. I had prayed steadily for weeks, and there had been no answer but coldness and darkness.
The air was full of Christmas merriment, with the bells ringing and children shouting in the bitter dusk of the evening. But there should be no Christinas for me, I knew, no gifts and no remembrance whatsoever.
Thinking of this, I couldn't control my tears on my way home, but I managed a smile to greet my little daughter. She opened the door for me and threw herself in my arms, screaming joyously and demanding desirably her Christmas gift. There I stood, frozen and overwhelmed by misery.

Norwood, a junior at St. Petersburg^ Lakewood High School, participated in the school’s Athletic Lifestyle Management Academy. The program prepares students for various careers in health science with two components. The first one is a hands-on skills component where the students have to demonstrate that they are expert in the skills of adult, child and infant CPR (心 肺复苏术),how to help somebody who's choking, as well as how to use an AED (自动体外除 颤仪).And the other is a written test component, showing that they master that knowledge. Norwood took a great interest in the programme, which was in line with her initial career pursuit in the future.
On the first day of the programme, her instructor Miller did vital signs and students learned how to take blood pressure, check pulse, and apply CPR. Norwood watched closely and performed the hand-on skills well.
Norwood and Simmons shared a long friendship. They had been friends since the seventh grade and since then they had built an unbreakable bond. The following day after school, the 16- year-old girl Norwood was driving three friends home in St. Petersburg, Florida, when another driver slammed into her from her left and sent her car rushing forward in an uncontrollable way.
“We crashed in someone's yard and I hit the tree," Norwood said. The impact jammed shut the driver's side door, so Norwood climbed out of the front window. Two of her friends managed to get out of the car unharmed, but the collision caused her 16-year-old friend Simmons to hit her head on the backseat window.
When Norwood turned around, she didn't see Simmons running with them so she had to run back to the car as fast as she could. Simmons was just sitting there unresponsive. Apparently, she passed out owing to the huge impact force. The unexpected crash left the girls in panic. A lot of people started to gather around to see what was happening. The crowd watched in astonishment, open-mouthed. Someone advised to make an emergency call immediately.

My school had a tradition during the ninth-grade graduation: a beautiful gold and green jacket (the school colors), was awarded to the student who had maintained the highest grades for nine years.
I had been a straight A student since the first grade and had looked forward very much to owning that jacket. My father was a farm laborer who couldn’t earn enough money to feed five children, so I was given to my grandparents to raise. There would never be a school sports jacket for us because we couldn’t afford it. This scholarship jacket was my only chance.
One day in May, I happened to overhear in the office. Mr. Schmidt, my history teacher, and Mr. Boone, my math teacher arguing about me. “I refuse to do it! I don’t care who her father is; her grades can’t match Martha’s at all. I won’t lie or falsify(伪造)records.” said Mr. Schmidt angrily.
But Mr. Boone’s voice sounded calm. “Joann’s father is not only on the Board(董事会), he owns the only store in town: we could say it was a close tie and…”
The pounding in my ears drowned out the rest of the words, only a word here and there filtered through. “…Martha is Mexican…resign … won’t do it …”
To this day I don’t remember how I made it through the rest of the afternoon. That night, I cried into my pillow so Grandmother wouldn’t hear me.
The next day when the principal called me into his office. “Martha,” he said, “There’s been a change in policy this year regarding the scholarship jacket. This year the Board has decided to charge fifteen dollars, which still won’t cover the complete cost of the jacket. So if you are unable to pay the money for the jacket, it will be given to the next one in line.”
Standing with all the dignity I could find, I said, I’ll speak to my grandfather about it, sir, and let you know tomorrow.” That day, I cried sadly on the walk home.

八、阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Shoveling(铲) snow had always been the best part about winter. Not that I thought it was fun, but my dad's reaction to a clean driveway kept me going. He hated shoveling snow more than anything. So, I took it upon myself at eight years old to do it for him. Every time I saw snow fall from the sky, I knew the universe was ready to put me to work.
I would run and put on my jacket, snow boots to prepare myself for the work ahead. But every single time, before I went outside, I would stop by my older sister's room to see if she wanted to help me. I knew she would say no, but I always asked anyway.
One day there was a lot of snow, and there was no way I would be able to clean it all by myself. It was getting dark, and I hated the thought of my dad having to shovel the snow after a long day's work. So I did the routine and knocked on my sister's door. As I expected, she gave me the same old "no". Annoyed, I asked again. Without saying anything further, she got up, pushed me out of the room and slammed(砰地关上) the door in my face.
I stood there silently for a second. Then, I turned around, went out of the house, and set out in the cold to tackle the enemy that lay in my driveway. But I couldn't calm down. I was really angry that she would leave me to battle this alone. All I wanted was some help. The more remembered every "no" she had ever said to me, the angrier I became.
I fought tirelessly, my short arms swinging from side to side while the wind cut against my cheeks. After one long hour, I was not even halfway done. Looking at the victorious snow, I thought of Dad's disappointment.

Jim slumped on the couch. Mother's Day was coming up, and he didn't have a present. "How can I buy a present without any money " he thought.
Jim picked up the newspaper that was lying on the couch. He noticed a large advertisement on the front page. The local department store was sponsoring a contest. "Tell us why your mom is special and win a shopping spree (购物狂欢) for her," said the ad.
"This is perfect!" thought Jim. He ran to his room with the newspaper. Taking a pencil and a blank piece of paper from his desk, he started to write.
"My mom is the best mother in the world. She always makes a lunch for me to take to school, and she never forgets my dessert. She reads as many books to me before bed as I want. She always remembers to check under the bed for monsters. And she gives the best hugs, but never in front of my friends, who would laugh at me for hugging my mom."
Jim liked what he had written. He copied it neatly and got an envelope and a stamp from his dad. He ran to the mailbox with his entry (参赛作品). "Mom will love having a shopping spree," he thought.
Jim checked the mailbox every day for his prize. Days passed by, and then weeks. Soon it was the day before Mother's Day. Jim still hadn't heard anything about the contest.
"What am I going to do now " he wondered. He didn't have a present, and he didn't have a shopping spree. And he still didn't have any money. He had to think of something. Jim closed his eyes and curled his toes and thought so hard that his ears hurt.

When I first got the bird, it must have only just been hatched(孵化). Its mother had disappeared, leaving it alone and shivering in the face of the north wind. I decided to take it straight back and build it a new home.
I hung an empty flowerpot(花盆) and it was in this pot that the bird was to have its new home. When Dad got home, he immediately discovered the new addition to our family. Without saying a word, he turned around and left the house. After some time, he returned and I saw that he had a handful of grass and pine needles. Obviously, Dad thought the nest I had made was far too rough and so he had decided to decorate it himself.
"A bird born at this time of year won't survive the winter. "In spite of this prediction on the bird's future, Dad very carefully fashioned the nest himself. Soon I found "Nuo Nuo"(Dad had named him) had started to grow feathers.
Dad probably realized that he had been a little cruel in his prediction. You see, he had already started training Nuo Nuo to walk. As you know, Nuo Nuo lived in a flowerpot, not a cage or anything. It was obvious that Nuo Nuo didn't realize he was a bird. He perhaps thinks he was one of the family. But it is not enough for a bird to walk, it must fly as well. Dad soon began attempting to make him learn this new ability, but it was not an easy task. After all, nobody in our family had mastered the art of flying. We didn't even have wings. How could we ask Nuo Nuo to do something that we had no means of doing ourselves

答案以及解析
一、答案:
I rushed towards Stan and tried to help him. He was hitting his clothes violently. I did what must be done. I pulled him into a mud pool. He was shocked at first, and then he must have realized why I did it. The ants went away. Since Stan and I were both covered in mud, we decided to head back. "I guess you're going to have a pretty good story for everyone," Stan said awkwardly. "Yeah, I guess so. You'll probably be known as Dancing Ant from now on."
That night, we all routinely sat around the campfire and I saw Stan's worry as clear as daylight. Then I said to him, "I know how it feels to be teased, and it isn't fun." I could see Stan's worry turn into surprise. The next day when I was picked for a basketball team, someone called, "Unfair! Shrieking Toad is a natural jumper!" Stan shouted, "Knock it off, guys. His name is Jay." I wouldn't have minded being given a cool nickname. But being known as plain "Jay", and Stan's friend, turned out to be cool too.

However, she saw a large snake coiled up before her, prepared for an attack! There stood the 11-year-old girl, stiffening with horror. In a flash, she saw Rover springing forward, seized the snake by the neck. He knocked it against the ground fiercely and repeatedly. Ultimately, the large snake twitched once and lay motionless, a pool of its blood soaking through the earth beneath. Scared witless, Susie was simply frozen like a statue staring stupidly at the lifeless snake with wide-open eyes. Suddenly she heard a whimpering and realized it was hers. Her lips were salty with tears trickling down her face.
"O Rover, my dear good dog!" Susie cried, "How brave you are!" The faithful dog came and rubbed his head against her hand. Guilt written all over her face, Susie put her arms around his neck, and burst into tears. "My dearest dog! How sorry I am that I was so selfish!" She was deeply moved by his guileless devotion, determined to learn to be on her guard against a self-centered spirit and become a more lovable little girl. Though not completely following her words, Rover understood the tone of her voice and capered about in great glee, barking and wagging his tail all the way home.

七、答案:
Paragraph 1
By the time I got home, my eyes were red and swollen. I found my grandpa in the bean field. His back bent into an arch and his face was drowned in sweats. I called him, in a choked voice. Sensing something wrong, he asked me what happened with great concern. I murmured the principal’s words, after which Grandpa fell silent, eyes rounding in disbelief. A surge of regret gnawing at my heart, I really hated to see my gray-haired Grandpa’s disappointment. Time ticking by, he heaved a long sigh, “My child, an award bought can’t be called an award.” I nodded understandingly. But who knew how reluctant and bitter I was
Paragraph 2
I dragged into the principal’s office the next day, sad and disappointed. I knew I might never get that jacket which represented my years of hard work and expectation. However, I tried to fight back the tears, with my head still lifted with dignity. “My grandpa…won’t pay the dollars. He said if I had to pay for it, then it wouldn’t be a scholarship jacket.” There was a deafening silence. The principal looked at me, biting his lip, as if thinking. Finally, after what seemed like a century, he decided that he would make an exception for me. I could hardly believe it. Looking into his eyes, which brimmed with smiles, I stood up and bowed low to him. Only at that moment did I believe that Mr. Schmidt and my grandpa were right: never can awards be falsified or bought.

八、答案:
Feeling bitter and desperate, I couldn't stop my tears. My inner anger drove me to the edge of madness. I rushed to my sister's room, expressing my long-buried dissatisfaction towards her absence from my snow shoveling experiences(非谓语动词短语作状语). Then, I stopped my accusation, still weeping. "Please don't cry. Every teardrop of yours is a reminder of how selfish I was. I'm sorry. Would you give me another chance to go shoveling with you " said my sister with gentleness and sincerity in her voice.
My sister and I went outside. I wasn't alone in this battle any more. By the time we finished(时间状语从句), my back was aching, muscles sore and body exhausted(独立主格结构). However, I was extremely happy. That was the beauty of companionship. And from the bright smile blooming on my sister's face(非谓语动词短语作定语), I could tell that she felt the same way(宾语从句). Arm in arm, we walked inside as darkness fell, waiting for our father to come home(非谓语动词短语作状语).
