1)50 thousand square kilometers of rice fields were converted to growing vegetables and other cash crops.
2)As a result of Yuan Longping’s discoveries Chinese rice production rose by 47.5 percent in the 1990’s.
3)He thought there was only one way to do this---by crossing different species of rice plant.
1) In the rice-growing world, the Chinese scientist, Yuan Longping, is a leading figure.
2)Following this, Yuan Longping’s rice was exported to other countries, such as
Pakistan and the Philip-pines.
3)He thought that the key to feeding people was to have more rice and to produce it more quickly.
Yuan longping 是the Chinese scientists 的同位语。
Wan hu,a Chinese government official ,invented a flying chair.(P39)
a Chinese government official 是Wan Hu 的同位语。
【分析】此句的句子结构是:状语(Following this)+主语+谓语+状语+such as +…
They are also used in firework display to celebrate great events, such as the end of the Olympic Games or the beginning of the new millennium in the year 2000.
Following the lecture, a discussion was held.
The following books are best sellers .
The chief has got a big following.
My work is to clean the house today.
the key to feeding people 供养人们的关键。
the answer to the question
the key to the door
notes to the text
the entrance to the building
1 ). The research was supported by the government .
2). Don’t worry ! The ice on the river is thick enough to support your weight .

4). His carelessness results in the deaths of two passengers.
5). His failure results from his carelessness in the exam .
常构成短语 as a result of和 as a result。
3. Its yield is much greater than the yield of other types of rice grown in Pakistan.
句中grown in Pakistan 过去分词做定语,相当于定语从句 the yield of other types of rice which are grown in Pakistan.
(1). The teacher playing football is my English teacher on the playground.
= The teacher who is playing football is my English teacher on the playground.

= The letter which was received this morning is from my mother .
(5). The risen sun is shining.
= The sun which(that) has risen is shining.
(1). The boy sleeping in my class is named Tom

Over one and half centuries ago , a drug that was called opium(鸦片)started a war between Great Britain and China . The war , which lasted two years ,was called the opium War . About two hundred years ago , opium was brought to China from India . It was carried on ships , most of which were owned by Great Britain . The Chinese government tried to stop the ships from bringing opium into China because more and more people were becoming opium addicts.
1. Over one and half centuries ago , a drug that was called opium(鸦片)started a war between Great Britain and China .(定语从句部分含有被动语态)
2. The war , which lasted two years ,was called the opium War .
3. About two hundred years ago , opium was brought to China from India .
4. It was carried on ships , most of which were owned by Great Britain .
They built this building last night .
This building was built by them last night .
They are often scolded by the teacher.
Trees are planted every spring .
Was the song composed by a soldier .
The boy was hit by a car yesterday .
The project is being carried out.

His bike has been stolen.
China was liberated in 1949.
The plan has already been made.
Midnight was written by Mao Dun.
Children sleep soundly.
The speaker was listened to carefully.
1). 一些表示感官的连系动词,如look(看起来),taste(吃起来),
sound(听起来),feel(摸起来),smell(闻起来)等,用主动
These flowers smell very nice.
扫),burn(燃烧),cook(煮)等。
易地),perfectly(十分地)等副词连用时,通常用主动语态表被
例如:
The knife cuts well.
My coat washes easily.
These books sell well.
The room needs cleaning .
The book ix worth reading .
Someone gave me a book.
I was given a book (by someone).
A book was given to me (by someone).
The question needn’t be discussed.
A new hotel is going to be built near the station.
This novel is said to have been translated into English.
He was often made fun of by his classmates.
1). 表示主动意义的常见词组有:be at desk (= be studying); be at work (=
be working); 例如:
These workers are at work.
2). 表示被动意义的常见词组有:be under discussion (= be being
discussed); be under construction (=be being constructed )。例如:
This building is under construction .

But Edison could never be pleased only because someone said he was a genius. "There is no such thing as genius," Edison said. He thought what people called genius was mostly hard work.
But Edison was a dreamer as well as a worker. From his earliest days as a child he wondered about the secrets of nature. He tried to understand them, and then he tried to learn what he could usefully do with them.
Edison enjoyed thinking. He knew that most people would do almost anything instead of the difficult work of thinking, especially if they do not think very often. But he knew, too, that thinking could give men enjoyment and pleasure.
Edison could not understand how anyone could not be interested in life. As he loved to think, he also loved to work. On the day he became 75 years old, someone asked him what idea he had about life. "Work," he answered, "Discovering the secrets of nature and using them to make man happier." He said he had enough inventions in his mind to give him another 100 years of work.

Hawking has left much for Chinese to think about.
British physicist Stephen Hawking , possibly the world’s most famous scientist after Albert Einstein, gave lectures in Zhejiang and Beijing in August.
An illness left him unable to move any part of his body except for three fingers. But his continuing efforts in the field of science have made young people take him as their idol (偶像) .
His books , such as A Brief History of Time , become best sellers in Chinese bookstores. “Hawking helps people expand their horizons and become interested in science,”said Pan Yunhe ,president of Zhejiang University.
Indeed, exports don’t think it likely that Hawking’s lectures and profound(深奥的) ideas will be easily understood by the average person . But he has certainly sowed the seeds of science among many young people.
And the “Hawking fever” caused by his visit has made people ask: How can China produce more top scientists like Hawking
“Nurturing top scientists will take as much work to change society as to educate the scientists themselves,” said Zhang fan. Zhang has studied in the UK since 1999 and will be a sophomore at Trinity College in October, 2002.
In British , Zhang said , teachers inspire students to have a general understanding of the subjects they are interested in. And they encourage students to develop new ideas, which helps them to nurture their creativity.
In Chins, the Ministry of Education has encouraged schools to provide quality education to tap students’ potential .
“I hope teachers will pay more attention to helping us use our imaginations and solve problems on our own,” said Lu Jie , a Junior 3 student in Sanfan Middle School in Beijing.

II.
It wouldn’t be terribly comfortable for you to sleep standing up, but the opposite is true for horses. That’s because of the way their bodies are built.
Horses have bones and ligaments(韧带)in their legs that can lock together in a special way. That allows the animal to be completely relaxed while standing.
1 In fact, it is preferable to lying down. Horses are heavy animals with big muscles(肌肉), bur their bones are surprisingly delicate(脆弱的). 2
Horses do, however, sometimes take short naps while lying on the ground in an area where they feel safe.
How did this happy? 3 Horses probably developed their habit of sleeping upright as a defense against enemies.
Their speed is their main defense in the wild, and it takes horses longer than most animals to pull themselves upright. A standing position keeps a horse constantly ready to race away if danger comes near.
Horses’ ability to stand in that special way is called the “stay apparatus”. 4 Horses can stand for a very long time-a few years-without getting tired.
A. Because they don’t have to use any energy, sleeping while upright is no problem for a horse.
B. If an enemy were to come while a horse was on the ground, they might not be able to get up fast enough to get away.
C. Lying in one position for too long could injure a horse.
D. They use it even while they are awake to avoid getting tired.
E. Scientists say it evolved (进化) over time.
