Learning objectives:
By the end of the class, students will be able to:
1. recognize some common vowel letter groups and read them correctly.
2. read new words and chants which contain vowel letter groups correctly.
3. be more interested and confident in learning English sounds.
Important Points:

Teaching procedures:
Step1. Lead-in (3 minutes)
1. A funny story.
A: Would you like to have a hamburger
B: No, thanks. I’m / fu:l /.
* / f l /, not / fu:l /. The man is not a fool. He is full.
Inspiration: It’s important to learn English sounds.
(Lead-in is aimed at motivating students’ interest and helps them realize the
importance of learning English sounds.)
Step2. Presentation & Practise (25 minutes)
1. Students read the chants one by one. Try to find the sounds of different letter groups.
ar: Bark. Bark. Bark. The dog is barking after the car. /ɑ:/
al: We walk and talk in the sun. / :/
or: Four short horses running very fast! / :/
ea: Read, read, read! Please teach me how to read. /i:/
ee: Can you see the busy bee high in the tree /i:/
ea: Nod your head, get some bread! /e/
oo: This is a goose. This is a moose. The goose is riding on the moose. /u:/
oo: Do you want to learn how to cook Then take a look at this book. / /
ir: The girl in a pink skirt likes to show her skirt. / :/
ur: This is a purse. It belongs to a nurse. / :/
er: I love my mother. I love my father. We all love each other. / /
(The chants are selected from Phonics Kids Books, Oxford Reading Tree and Fun With
English. The chants and the pictures can motivate students and help them find the sounds
of the letter groups. All the chants are not long, so it is easy for students to read.)
2. Students learn the sounds with an English teacher from the UK (BBC). While pronouncing the sounds, students should pay attention to her mouth.
(The BBC teaching video is used to help students get access to authentic pronunciation. It can also help students pay attention to their mouths when pronouncing the sounds.)
3. Students listen and read the following words. Pay attention to the sounds of the letter groups. (Page 51)
Group 1: arm, art, car, star /ɑ:/
Group 2: tall, walk, horse, short / :/
Group 3: eat, read, meet, see /i:/
Group 4: bread, head, heavy, weather /e/
Group 5: cool, food, moon, school /u:/
Group 6: book, good, look, would / /
Group 7: bird, girl, nurse, word / :/
Group 8: after, dinner, father, worker / /
(The words are selected from the textbook. Practise reading these words can help students get familiar with the sounds of different letter groups. )
4. Students practise reading the chants.

(The chants are selected from Phonics Kids Books and Oxford Reading Tree. Reading the
chants can provide opportunities for students to practise the sounds of the letter groups.
Though the chants are longer and a little challenging, they are easy to understand. )
Step3. Practice more (15 minutes)
1. Students briefly review what they have learned and try to read some new words.
(1) ar /ɑ:/ art mark
(2) al / :/ walk salt
or / :/ short corn
(3) ea /i:/ read feat
/e/ head dead
(4) ee /i:/ meet deep
(5) oo /u:/ food boom
/ / book hook
(6) ir / :/ bird firm
ur / :/ nurse fur

(This activity helps students review the sounds of letter groups. Furthermore, it encourages students to read some new words based on the pronunciation rules. )
2. Part A: Read the words and put each of them in the correct place.

/i:/ free, team /e/ healthy, ready
/u:/ cool, foot / / cook, noodle
/ :/ first, world / / never, player
(This exercise is from Part A. It helps students practise reading the sounds of letter groups.)
3. Part B: Look at the pairs of words. Read the words on the left first. Then try to say the words on the right correctly.

7. clean bean 8. talk chalk 9. turn hurt
(This exercise is from Part B. It relates to the second teaching aim.)
4. Try to read more new words.

(This exercise is based on Part B. It provides more new words for students to practise.)
5. Part C: Practise saying the following phrases.

(This exercise is from Part C. It provides chances for students to practise at a high level.)
