The best reporters I know are bright, persistent, honest, curious and courageous. If you asked them to explain their success, this is what they might say:
Helen: A good reporter is a generalist, able to deal with a number of topics and talk with a variety of people. He or she can see the unusual, the ironic(讽刺的)in the everyday. She can think through all the possibilities and organize a large amount of information to find the important parts.
Jack: A good reporter is quick. Once he is assigned a story, he goes after it. He makes the calls and keeps trying if he doesn't make contact. Besides, a good reporter is curious. He or she takes pleasure in the new, and in the old, in the history or previous examples that got us where we are. He enjoys reading and appreciates the details.
Susan: A good reporter is pleasant. She adopts a friendly nature with those she meets. She is a grateful guest, with a belief in the basic goodness of people. She conveys to those she meets that she is tolerant of them and their ideas, even though she doesn't like them or what they stand for.
Tom: A good reporter is honest. He seeks the truth and acts independently. He does what he says he's going to do, and doesn't do something he promised to avoid. He returns his calls, and he's willing to say no. He's obsessed with accuracy and double checks his facts with call backs. He sees both sides to every issue.
Richard: As Jon Franklin, reporter, author and teacher, said, “Back when I first started, I thought intelligence was the most important attribute a reporter could have. I have since changed my mind. You do have to be intelligent, but the big thing is courage. Courage to open your mind and let the whole damned confusing world in. Courage to always be the ignorant one, on somebody else's turf. USA Today is a national American daily newspaper published by the Gannett Company. It was set up by Alten“AL”Neuharth in 1982 with the goal of providing a national newspapers in the US market, where generally only a single local newspaper was available. The paper has the widest circulation(发行量)of any newspaper in the US, averaging over 2.5 million copies every weekday. It was the first color newspaper in the US.
The newspaper was also among the first newspapers to use satellites to send the final edition of the newspaper to different locations across the country for printing and final distribution in those regional markets. This allowed the paper to include the most recent news and sports scores in each edition.
Each edition of the newspaper consists of four sections: News, Money, Sports and Life. On Fridays, two Life sections are included: the regular life for movies subtitled Weekend, which features television, films and trends, and a travel supplement called Destinations & Diversions. Each section is denoted(表示) by a certain color to different sections, which is seen in a box the top left corner of the first page, with News being blue(section A), Money with green(section B), red for Sports(section C) and purple for life(section D).
USA Today prints each complete story on the front page of the respective(各自的) section with exception to the cover story. The cover story is a longer story that requires a jump (readers must turn to another page in the paper to complete the story, usually the very next page, page 2 of that section).

No country in the world has more daily newspapers than the USA. There are almost 2, 000 of them, as compared with 180 in Japan, 164 in Argentina and 111 in Britain. The quality of some American papers is extremely high and their views are quoted all over the world. Famous dailies like the Washington Post or the New York Times have a powerful influence all over the country. However, they are not national newspapers in the sense that The Times is in Britain or Le Monde is in France, since each American city has its own daily newspaper. The best of these presents detailed description of national and international news, but many tend to limit themselves to state or city news.
Like the press in most other countries, American newspapers range from the “sensational” which feature crime and gossip(闲谈), to the “serious”, which focus on factual news and the analysis of world events. But with few exceptions, American newspapers try to entertain as well as give information, for they have to compete with the attraction of television.
Just as American newspapers satisfy all tastes, so do they also try to attract readers of all political parties. A few newspapers support extremist (极端主义的) groups on the far right and on the far left, but most daily newspapers try to attract middle of the road Americans who are moderate(中立的). Many of these papers print colunms by well known journalists of different political and social views, in order to present a balanced picture.
As in other countries, American newspapers can be either responsible or irresponsible, but it is generally accepted that the American press serves its country well and that it has more than once courageously exposed political scandals (丑闻) or crimes, for instance, the Watergate Affair(水门事件). The newspapers drew the attention of the public to the horrors of the Vietnam War.
45.There are fewer national newspapers in________.
A. Britain than in the USA
B. France than in Britain
C. the USA than in Britain or France
D. France than in the USA or Britain
答案:C 细节理解题。由文章第一段第五句“However, they are not national newspapers in the sense that The Times is in Britain or Le Monde is in France, since each American city has its own daily newspaper.”可知,故选C。
46.Most American newspapers try hard to entertain their readers because________.
A. they have to keep up a good relation with them
B. they have to compete with television
C. they have to write about crime and gossip
D. they have to give factual news in an interesting way
答案:B 细节理解题。文章第二段第二句“But with few exceptions, American newspapers try to entertain as well as give information, for they have to compete with the attraction of television.”意思为:但是除了少数例外,美国的报纸尽量娱乐以及提供资讯,因为它们必须同电视的吸引力相竞争。故选B。
47.Many American newspapers attract readers of different political preference by________.
A.supporting extremist groups from time to time
B. inviting middle of the road Americans to write articles for them
C. avoiding carrying articles about extremists
D. printing articles representing different political viewpoints
答案:D 细节理解题。文章第三段最后一句“Many of these papers print colunms by well known journalists of different political and social views, in order to present a balanced picture.”故选D。
48.The passage is mainly about________.
A. the characteristics of American newspapers
B. the development of American newspapers
C. the functions of American newspapers
D. the advantages and disadvantages of American newspapers
答案:A 主旨大意题。本文的关键词是American newspapers,根据每一段的主题句,可知本文重点介绍了美国报纸的一些特点。故选A。
D
If there is one thing I am sure about, it is that in a hundred years from now we will still be reading newspapers. It is not that newspapers are a necessity. Even now some people get most of their news from television or radio. Many buy a paper only on Saturday or Sunday. But for most people reading a newspaper has become a habit passed down from generation to generation.
The nature of what is news may change. What basically makes news is what affects our lives—the big political stories, the coverage of the wars, earthquakes and other disasters, will continue much the same. I think there will be more coverage of scientific research, though. It's already happening in areas that may directly affect our lives, like genetie(基因) engineering. In the future, I think there will be more coverage of scientific explanations of why we feel as we do as we develop a better understanding of how the brain operates and what our feelings really are.
It's quite possible that in the next century newspapers will be transmitted(传送)electronically from Fleet Street and printed out in our own home. In fact, I am pretty sure that it will happen in the future. You will probably be able to choose from a menu, making up your own newspaper by picking out the things you want to read—sports and international news, etc.
I think people have got it wrong when they talk about competition between the different media(媒体). They actually feed_off_each other. Some people once foresaw that television would kill off newspapers, but that hasn't happened. What is read on the printed page lasts longer than pictures on a screen or sound in the air. And as for the Internet, it is never really pleasant to read something just on a screen.
49.What is the best title for the text
A. The Best Way to Get News
B. The Changes of Media
C. Make Your Own Newspaper
D. The Future of Newspapers
答案:D 主旨大意题。全文多处出现will和in the future,所以这篇文章主要围绕报纸的将来,故选D。
50.What will probably be on in the newspaper made by yourself
A. Sports and international news.
B. A menu of important news.
C. The most important news.
D. What you are interested in.
答案:C 细节理解题。根据文章倒数第二段“You will probably be able to choose from a menu, making up your own newspaper by picking out the things you want to read—sports and international news, etc.”。故选C。
51.From the text, we can infer that________.
A. newspapers will win the competition among the different media
B. newspapers will stay with us together with other media
C. television will take the place of newspapers
D. some media will die out
答案:B 推理判断题。根据文章第一段“Even some people get most of their news from television or radio. Many buy a paper only on Saturday or Sunday.”可推知此题答案为B。
52.The underlined phrase “feed off” in the last paragraph means________.
A. depend on B. compete with
C. fight with D. kill of
答案:A 词义猜测题。上句“I think people have got it wrong when they talk about competition between the different media. 我认为人们所讨论的关于媒体之间的竞争是错误的。”下句“Some people once foresaw that television would kill off newspapers, but that hasn't happened. 有些人曾经预测电视将把报纸淘汰,但这件事并未发生。”可知, feed off意为“依靠”。故选A。

Dear editor,

参考范文:
Dear editor,
What the picture shows is just a common scene in the neighborhoods where we live, whether it is in city or in town. Public places are wow made too much use of by people. Some make drawings or practise their handwriting on walls in these places to show their talents or for fun. Some take advantage of such public places to make free advertisements. Others even put dirty words in these places to curse those whom they don't like.
From my point of view on the one hand, measures should be taken by local administration organizations to keep public places tidy, clean and well preserved. On the other hand, people should mind their behaviors. Everyone should be aware of the importance of protecting our living environment. And children should be educated to waintain clean and peaceful surroundings. As we know, the image of a neighbourhood or a city is reflected especially in public places. The practices above spoil our living enviroument and the impression on travelers to our hometown.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
