First aid is emergency care for a victim of sudden illness or injury until more skillful medical treatment is available. It may save a life or improve certain vital signs including pulse, temperature,a clear airway(气道), and breathing. In minor emergencies, first aid may prevent a victim's condition from turning worse and provide relief from pain. First aid must be administered as quickly as possible. In the case of the Critically injured, a few minutes can make a difference between complete recovery and loss of life.
First aid measures depend upon a victim's needs and the provider's level of knowledge and skill. Knowing what not to do in an emergency is as important as knowing what to do. Improperly moving a person with a neck injury, for example, can lead to permanent spinal (脊柱的) injury and paralysis (瘫痪).
Despite the variety of injuries possible, several principles of first aid apply to all emergencies. The first step is to call for professional medical help. The victim, if conscious, should be reassured that medical aid has been requested, and asked for permission to provide any first aid. Next, assess the scene, asking other people or the injured person's family or friends about details of the injury or illness, any care that may have already been given, and preexisting conditions such as diabetes (糖尿病) or heart trouble. The victim should be checked for a medical bracelet (手镯) or card that describes special medical conditions. Unless the accident scene becomes unsafe or the victim may suffer further injury,do not move the victim.
First aid requires rapid assessment of victims to determine whether life threatening conditions exist. One method for evaluating a victim's condition is known by the acronym(首字母缩写词)ABC,which stands for:
A—Airway: Is it open and clear
B—Breathing: Is the person breathing Look, listen, and feel for breathing.
C—Circulation: Is there a pulse Is the person bleeding externally Check skin color and temperature for additional indications of circulation problems.
36.First aid may bring about all the following results EXCEPT________.

Electric Shocks Can Be Fatal
Government statistics recently showed that in the UK, more than 3,000 people a year experience electric shocks in their homes. A smaller number of people are killed after contact with power lines outside the home. Electric shocks can cause a person's heart or breathing to stop, can also cause burns and are potentially fatal. It is essential for people to learn basic first aid techniques to deal with such emergencies.
What to do If you are the first person to reach someone who has had an electric shock, don't touch them! If they are still holding the appliance (家用电器) that has given them shock (e. g. a hair dryer), unplug it or turn off the power at its source. Under_no_circumstances_will_you_try_to_move_the_appliance_with_your_hand!
If you can't turn off the power, use a piece of wood, like a broom handle or a chair, to separate the victim from the appliance or the power source. You may even be able to do this with a folded newspaper.
The victim must remain lying down. If they are unconscious, victims should be placed on their side. But they should not be moved if there is a possibility of neck or spine injuries unless it is absolutely necessary. It is essential to maintain the victim's body heat, so make sure you cover him or her with a blanket before you do anything else. If the victim is not breathing, apply mouth to mouth resuscitation (恢复呼吸). Keep the victim's head low until professional help arrives. If the electric shock has been caused by an external power line, the dangers to the victim and to anybody providing first aid are much greater.

First aid means the aid or the help that can be given to an injured person first, that is, before any other help arrives. Nowadays there is usually a telephone not far away and the first we should do,if a serious accident happens,is to send someone to telephone for an ambulance. Sometimes quick action by us may save someone's life.
Shock. People often suffer from shock after receiving an injury, sometimes even when the injury is a small one. The face turns grey, and the skin becomes damp and cold. They breathe quickly. They should be kept warm. Cover them with a blanket and give them a warm drink.
Broken bones. Do not move the patient. Send for an ambulance at once. Treat for shock if necessary.
Bleeding. A little bleeding doesn't harm. It washes dirt from tile wound. But if the bleeding continues, try to stop it by placing a clean cloth firmly over the wound until the bleeding stops or helps arrive.
Poison. A person who has taken poison should be taken to a hospital at once. With some poisons, sleeping pills, for example,it is a good thing to make the patient throw up by pressing your fingers down his or her throat.

Wednesday is December first, World AIDS Day. This year, experts are reporting more signs of success in stopping the AIDS epidemic (流行病,传染病). The number of AIDS related deaths and the number of new infections are both decreasing.
Michel Sidibe is the executive director of the Joint United Nations Program known as UNAIDS.
MICHEL SIDIBE:“Today we can say with confidence and determination that we have broken the trajectory (轨道) of the AIDS spreading widely.”
The latest UNAIDS report says new HIV infections have fallen almost twenty percent in the last ten years. And there has been a similar drop in the last five years in the number of AIDS related deaths.
An estimated thirty three million people worldwide were living with HIV last year. Two and a half million were children. HIV is the virus that causes AIDS.
Africa south of the Sahara has the most deaths and new infections. But many of those countries have made great progress.
Worldwide estimates show that more than two and a half million people became newly infected with HIV in 2009. At the same time, about one million eight hundred thousand people died from AIDS related sicknesses.
Drug treatment to suppress the virus has expanded. One result has been fewer babies born infected by their mothers. Still, the report says ten million people are waiting for treatment.
UNAIDS officials also say not enough is being spent for prevention. They say prevention efforts are responsible for much of the progress.
More and more young people say they are following safer practices. Surveys find greater use of safe tools and people in many countries say they have fewer sexual partners.
World Health Organization chief Margaret Chan called this year's AIDS report encouraging. But she noted that the populations most at risk are also those who have the least access to services. These populations include sex workers, drug users and homosexual men.

A nosebleed can be frightening to get or see, but try to stay calm. Most nosebleeds look much worse than they really are. Almost all nosebleeds can be treated at home.
If you get a nosebleed, sit down and lean slightly forward. Keeping your head above your heart will make your nose bleed less. Lean forwards so that the blood will flow out of your nose instead of down the back of your throat. If you lean back, you may swallow the blood. This can make you uncomfortable.
Use your thumb and index fingers to press together the soft part of your nose. Keep holding your nose until the bleeding stops. Don't let go for at least 5 minutes. If it's still bleeding after that, hold it again for 10 minutes straight. You can also place an ice pack across the toe of your nose. Once the bleeding stops, don't do anything that may make it start again, such as bending over or blowing your nose.
The most common causes of nosebleeds are dryness (often caused by indoor heat in the winter) and nose picking. These two things work together nose picking occurs more often when the liquid in the nose is dry. Other, less common causes include injuries, colds or cocaine use. Children may stick small objects up their nose. Old people may have infections or high blood pressure. The cause of nosebleeds is often unknown.
Most nosebleeds aren't serious. They occur in the front part of the nose and stop in a few minutes.
A few nosebleeds start in large vessels(血管) in the back of the nose, which can be dangerous. They may occur after an injury. This type of nosebleed is more common in the elderly and is often due to high blood pressure, daily aspirin use or bleeding disorders.

Heatstroke is an illness caused by being in great heat for too long. The most important characteristic of heatstroke is the high body temperature.
Care should be centered on lowering the body temperature as quickly as possible. Failure to do this may result in death. The right first aid measures for heatstroke are as follows:
First, have the victim lie down and elevate his or her feet. Be sure to maintain an open airway of the victim. Then, try to move the victim to a cool environment. After this, apply cold and wet towels to the victim and use a fan to lower his or her temperature. If possible, have the victim drink some water or something like that. The last but most important step is to transport the victim to the hospital in time.
