In recent years, yoga(瑜珈)has become popular with people for its fitness. Because of the focus on the physical aspects of yoga, like postures and breathing, few people realize that they are taking part in an ancient practice, developing from Indian religion.
Yoga originated in India in the sixth century B.C., when people were trying to answer questions about the nature of the self and the soul. It started as a practice only done by ascetics(僧人). So it was not something that the average people did.
Yoga is not only a physical practice but also a mental practice, designed to reduce the focus on the external(外部), said Whitney Sanford, professor of religious studies. Most people pay much attention to daily existence and as a result, they lead busy lives, while Yoga provides people with a technique to cut off their devotion to the external.
Samantha Tam said that practicing yoga improved her flexibility and treated her injuries. “Every time after practicing yoga, I always felt really relaxed and was in a good mood,”she said.
Yoga was probably introduced on a popular level in America in the 1960s and 1970s, when Western people began to show curiosity about other religions. Now most people pursue yoga to relieve stress, and fair numbers of people are simply curious.

You Are What You Eat
Fatness is a main problem for Asia's fast-food generation. Dr. Chwang, director of the Department of Food Nutrition, says children are consuming more meat and soft drinks. That is a thorough departure from the traditional diet of vegetables and rice and little meat.“They like big pieces of fried meat with a soft drink. So although they eat the same volume of food, their calorie intake(卡路里摄入量)has increased. Now about 40 to 45 percent of their calories come from fat,”says Chwang.
Although on the whole Asians tend towards thinness, culture—namely Asians' hospitality(好客)—is a reason for the fatness of today's generation, according to Chwang. “Asian people love food,”she says,“Eating and drinking are important social and family fun_ction.”In the past, however, big meals were only hosted on special occasions as people were more careful with money. Today's climate of wealth and remarkable consumption, 10-coure meals are no longer reserved for significant occasions.
More than anyone else, children are on the receiving end of their parents' improved circumstances. “In the past, people had four or more children—now, they have one or two, so they tend to spoil them,”says chwang. The easiest way is to give them“quality food”. Parents think feeding them well is showing their love. They feel bad when their children look thin.
When describing the condition of most overweight Asian children, Chwang says,“There is a clear relationship between fatness and indoor play. Children get fat because they don't move, and eventually, they don't want to move because they are fat.”
Thanks to technology, a growing army of children prefer video games to do old outdoor sports.“What do children do when watching TV or sitting in front of the computer playing video games? They eat chocolate and drink Coke,”says Chwang.

It all started at the beginning of the fifth grade. At first, Carmen wasn't really sure what was happening. In calss, she had to squint(斜视)to see the blackboard clearly. As the fuzziness(模糊)got worse, she became more and more worried. It was important for her to see the notes and homework assignments the teacher put on the board.
However, she didn't want anyone to know that she was having a problem of seeing. At last, her mother noticed her squinting as she watched favorite shows, and called the eye doctor to set up an appointment for her.
Three days later, Carmen had new glasses and instructions from her doctor to wear them all the time. Carmen frowned in the car the whole way home.“You look just as beautiful with those glasses on as you do without them,”her mother said. But Carmen didn't believe her.
The next day, Carmen kept the glasses in her pocket as she walked into the schoolyard. She avoided her friends and stood alone, feeling miserable. Suddenly, Theresa, her friend, cried out,“My silver ring is gone! It's very special and I can't lose it!”
Carmen realized that she could search better if she could see better. She took the glasses out and put them on. She looked down at the ground and a glimmer of silver caught her eye. It was the ring.
“Here it is,”she shouted. She handed it to Theresa.“Thanks Carmen,”she said,“I never thought we'd find it.”She paused. “Hey, I didn't know you wore glasses. They look great”.

Last summer I went through a training program and became a literacy volunteer(扫盲志愿者). The training I received, though excellent, did not tell me how it was to work with a real student, however. When I began to discover what other people's lives were like because they could not read, I realized the true importance of reading.
My first student Marie was a 44-year-old single mother of three. In the first lesson, I found out she walked two miles to the nearest supermarket twice a week because she didn't know which bus to take. When I told her I would get her a bus schedule, she told me it would not help because she could not read it. She said she also had difficulty once she got to the supermarket because she couldn't always remember what she needed. Since she did not know words, she could not write out a shopping list. Also, she could only recognize items by sight, so if the product had a different label. She would not recognize it as the product she wanted.
As we worked together, learning how to read built Marie's self-confidence, which encouraged her to continue in her studies. She began to make rapid progress and was even able to take the bus to the supermarket. After this successful trip, she reported how self-confident she felt. At the end of the program, she began helping her youngest son, Tony, a shy first grader, with his reading. She sat with him before he went to sleep and together they would read bedtime stories. When his eyes became wide with excitement as she read, pride was writen all over her face, and she began to see how her own hard work in learning to read paid off. As she described this experience, I was proud of myself as well. I found that helping Marie to build her self-confidence was more rewarding than anything I had ever done before.
As a literacy volunteer, I learned a great deal about teaching and helping others. In fact, I may have learned more from the experience than Marie did.

Science can't explain the power of pets, but many studies have shown that the company of pets can help lower blood pressure (血压) and raise chances of recovering from a heart attack, reduce loneliness and spread all-around good cheer.
Any owner will tell you how much joy a pet brings. For some, an animal provides more comfort than a husband/wife. A 2002 study by Karen Allen of the State University of New York measured stress (紧张) levels and blood pressure in people—half of them pet owners—while they performed 5 minutes of mental arithmetic (算术) or held a hand in ice water. Subjects completed the tasks alone, with a husband/wife, a close friend or with a pet. People with pets did it best. Those tested with their animal friends had smaller change in blood pressure and returned most quickly to baseline heart rates. With pets in the room, people also made fewer math mistakes than when doing in front of other companions. It seems people feel more relaxed (放松) around pets, says Allen, who thinks it may be because pets don't judge.
A study reported last fall suggests that having a pet dog not only raises your spirits but may also have an effect on your eating habits. Researchers at Northwestern Memorial Hospital spent a year studying 36 fat people and their equally fat dogs on diet-and-exercise programs; a separate group of 56 people without pets were put on a diet program. On average, people lost about 11 pounds, or 5% of their body weight. Their dogs did even better, losing an average of 12 pounds, more than 15% of their body weight. Dog owners didn't lose any more weight than those without dogs but, say researchers, got more exercise overall—mostly with their dogs—and found it worth doing.
52.What does the text mainly discuss?
A.What pets bring to their owners.
B.How pets help people calm down.
C.People's opinions of keeping pets.
D.Pet's value in medical research.
53.We learn from the text that a person with heart disease has a better chance of getting well if ______.
A.he has a pet companion
B.he has less stress of work
C.he often does mental arithmetic
D.he is taken care of by his family
54.According to Allen, why did the people do better with pets around when facing stressful tasks?
A.They have lower blood pressure.
B.They become more patient.
C.They are less nervous.
D.They are in higher spirits.
55.The research mentioned in the last paragraph reports that ________.
A.people with dogs did more exercise
B.dogs lost the same weight as people did
C.dogs liked exercise much more than people did
D.people without dogs found the program unhelpful

2答案:C day by day“一天天地”,强调变化;day after day强调重复,表示“一天又一天”。
B be made up of“由……
If it had not been for the flood, the ship would have reached its destination on schedule。
get rid of“除掉”;get on with“与……相处”;made up for“弥补”;made up of“由……
11答案:C 由从句中句子成分知he told us缺宾语,故应选关系代词that/which。
17答案:A 从下文“she gave the family one of her little homemade paper roses”可知,此处表示“她为孩子找到了一个新家”。
organize“组织”;plan“计划”;host“主持(活动)”;attend“参加”。
24答案:A 由下文“They not only loved me”可知,这里用“loved”,表示“被爱”。
26答案:B necessity“必需品”;possibility“可能性”;beauty“美好的东西”;riches“财富”;a world of possibilities意为“一个充满可能性的世界”。
28答案:A start out“开始”;come up“走近”;turn out“证明是”;grow up“长大”。
replace“代替”;symbolize“象征”;equal“等于”;create“创造”。
31答案:A 由上文“to be giving that chance to a child”可知,这里表示“给自己的小女孩一个新的绝好的机会”。
下文“tie together the meaningful things”也有提示。
35答案:A yet“然而”;besides“此处”;othrwise“否则”;therefore“因此”。
根据第一段最后一句“...they are taking part in an ancient practice, developing from Indian religion”以及第二段第二句中“It started as a practice only done by ascetics”可推测人们最初练瑜珈是因为宗教的原因。
据后面提到的“maybe wearing glasses won't be so sad after all.”
从第一段最后一句“It was important for her to see the notes...”

I am a student from Beijing No. 1 High School. I was born on May 1st in 1991 and I will graduate in July this year. I have studied English hard for six years because I am really interested in it. I am especially good at spoken English and written English. Operating the personal computer is also one of my advantages. I can not only make programs for it by myself but also do well in typing, for my typing speed is 100 words per minute.
If I am accepted, I will cherish the opportunity and work hard to be a good employee.
I am looking forward to your reply.
Yours sincerely,
Li Lei
