Did you notice that on the back of the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games medals there are 24 dots surrounding the Olympic logo in the middle These dots are not only there to be pleasing to the eyes, but also represent that Beijing 2022 is the 24th Winter Olympics.
The 24 dots sit on two of five concentric circles (同心圆) around the medal. The pattern’s design was inspired by a diagram (图表) used in early astrological charts in China to explore the annual activities of the Sun.
The diagram was first recorded in the book Zhoubi Suanjing (《周髀算经》), or the Zhou Dynasty (1,046 BC—256 BC) Classic of the Gnomon. Written thousands of years ago, the book is one of the oldest Chinese mathematical texts. The 24 dots have a polished gloss finish (抛光面) to help them stand out from the matte (哑光) background just like shining stars stand out from the night sky, which symbolizes the bright unlimited potential of the athletes.
The 24 dots also refer to the 24 Solar Terms used as part of the traditional Chinese calendar, such as the recent Lichun, or the Beginning of Spring, which falls around February 4 every year. These Solar Terms played an important role in helping farmers with their agricultural activities.
Besides the “24 dots”, the design ingenuity of the Olympic medal can also be seen in details such as the ribbons. They are made from traditional Chinese silk and red in colour, which is in line with the cultural characteristics of the Chinese Spring Festival and expresses festive hopes for the athletes as the Beijing Games happened to fall during the Chinese Spring Festival in 2022.

In Changsha, Hunan, there is a small unknown village called Baiyun. That’s where Qin Yue fei works and lives.
Born in 1985 in Chongqing, Qin has been known as a gifted boy since his childhood. When he graduated from Yale in 2011, he gave up finding a well-paid job in big cities. To everyone’s surprise, he took the exam held by the local government and became a village chief (村官) in Hejiashan Village. His monthly pay was only 1,450 yuan. It was a very poor village. Qin tried his best to improve it. He raised over 800, 000 yuan in one year from the government and some rich people. With the money, they established new schools, bought school buses and so on. The village was getting much better.

“Hello, everyone! Welcome to Tiangong Class,” With this greeting, a special lecture began on Tiangong space station on Dec 9, 2021. It’s about 400 kilometers above Earth. The space lecture lasted for about an hour and it was broadcast live to millions of students. Three astronauts from Shenzhou XIII crew—Zhai Zhigang, Wang Yaping and Ye Guangfiu hosted the lecture. They showed how they live and work on the space station and did some interesting experiments. The experiments are interesting because they could only be done in space. It was the second live space lecture that Wang Yaping on the space station.
Compared with the class nine years ago, the space lecture in 2021 was greatly different. Firstly, the “classroom” was bigger. Wang Yaping delivered the space lecture in Tianhe space core module（核心舱）, which is the biggest spacecraft developed by China till now. Secondly, the quality of space-to-ground interaction and communication was also much improved. Thirdly, with the help of China’s Tianlian relay satellites, the transmission（传输）speed was highly increased and the whole live broadcast ran smoothly. These changes showed that Chinese aerospace industry has made great progress in the past nine years. Finally, along with the technological progress, the space lecture discussed more disciplines of science. For example, biology was added.
Though these space lectures showed various topics, the aim behind them has never changed. Both space lectures aim to spread knowledge about manned spaceflights among young people and encourage them to love science. Zhou Jianping, designer-in-chief of China’s manned space program said that the spirit of science in the youth is an important driver of the progress of mankind and these space activities can help them build the spirit of loving science.
