Integrated Skills (Teaching Designs)
I. Teaching Objectives
At the end of the class, students will be able to:
1. recognize familiar words in a conversation about shopping.
2. extract useful information while listening.
3. make up a conversation about shopping.
4. know about the living conditions of children in poor areas and cultivate the virtue of helping others.
II. Important points and key important points of teaching
1. Students should make up a conversation about shopping.
2. Students should know about the living conditions of children in poor areas and discuss ways to help them.
III. Teaching procedures
Part1
Step1. Lead-in
Teacher shows students a short video about different people’s smiles with money, then, make students have a free talk about next 3 topics step by step:
1. Do you have any pocket money (make students know the underlined phrase well)
↓
2. How much pocket money do you have every week
↓
3. How do you use your pocket money
Step2. Do the first listening part.
1. After students talk about “How do you use your pocket money ”, teacher make students listen to the tape once to try to get the correct information about how Daniel, Simon, Sandy and Amy use their pocket money.
2. Students should listen again for the reasons how the 4 students use their pocket money, then, fill in the blanks.
Step3. Do the second listening part.
From the topic “Simon wants to buy a pair of football shoes”, students should listen to the Speak-up once to answer the following questions:
1. What is Simon’s size
2. How much does that pair of shoes cost
3. Do they buy the first pair Why
Step4. Students study the Speak-up part.
1. Students read the Speak-up part and try to play it out by playing different roles in group.
2. Teacher make students pay attention to the important language points.
Step 5 Group discussion and pair work.
1. Students have a group discussion on the topic “When buying clothes, what do we need to pay attention to ” (size, prize and colour)
2. Students should do a pair work:
If you want to buy clothes for yourself, just do a pair work to make a dialogue between you and the shopkeeper.
(Students can use the expressions of the speak-up part as a model)
Part2
Step1. Lead-in
1. Teacher says “But, do you know In this cold winter, we can use our pocket money to buy clothes to keep warm and make ourselves pretty. But some children can’t do anything like this !!!”
2. Teacher show students a short video about the children’s interviews and records in poor areas.
Step2. Listening part
1. Students listen to the conversation between Simon and his mother to choose what the children need and complete the reasons by filling blanks. (Student should try to get the key information as quickly as possible)
2. Students should complete Simon’s letter with the information in Part A2. (Simon writes a letter to his classmates and asks them to help the children in poor areas.)
3. Students should find some ways to help the children in poor areas. (By using their pocket money)
Step3. Brainstorming
1. Teacher ask students the question: What else do children in poor areas need
2. Show a picture of a short composition from a child in poor areas, make students find the things that the poor children need: Medicine, money and parents’ love.
Step4. Group discussion
1. Students do a group discussion on “what can we do to help children in poor areas ” to enhance their thoughts on helping the children in poor areas.
2. After showing the discussions, teacher and the students conclude: donate, raise, build and teach.
IV. Sharing seconds
To enhance students’ thoughts on helping the children in poor areas, students should read the the following sentences with music:
1. If everyone shares a little love, the world will be better!
只要人人都献出一点爱,世界将变成美好的人间。
2. Good things come in small packages.
勿以善小而不为
V. Conclusion
Teacher: Today, we have leant that many children in poor areas cannot enjoy happy life like us, we should value our life and work hard to help them, after class, everybody should try your best to remember the key language points and put them into use correctly.
Teaching reflection
本节课是综合技能课,课堂设计基于训练学生的听力技能,使他们从几个听得环节中能够更好、更准确地获得关键信息并完成对应练习,每个练习的设置具有不同形式,基本上达到了训练学生听力的目标。此外,在训练听力技能的基础上,本节课重在训练学生英语语言表述和口语表达,通过自由讨论、小组讨论及双人情景目标对话等形式来促进学生的口语表达训练,达到预期效果。最重要的是,本节课的设计初衷涵盖德育环节,利用视频引导、学生讨论等方式逐渐升华主题——学生要爱惜来之不易的美好生活,努力学习可以帮助更多贫困地区儿童。
总的来讲,本节课完成了教学目标,但在细节环节(听与说)过度上可以有更好的方式,期待自己在下一轮课中有更好完善。
