  Yan Wei is from Shandong Province, China. He became the country’s first blind runner to finish a 100-kilometre ultramarathon in Shanghai on October 18, 2020.
Yan was blind months after he was born. He first started to run to lose weight and overcome asthma(哮喘). One day, he learned from the Internet that blind runners could also attend marathon events with the help of guide runners. In 2015, Yan took part in the Beijing Marathon. In the end, he tried his best to finish the full course accompanied(陪同) by volunteer guide runners. This became the beginning of Yan’s marathon career. In the following years, he appeared in more marathon events all over the country.
In April 2017, Yan achieved another huge accomplishment(成就) in his career: He finished the Boston Marathon at 4 hours and 26 minutes, and he became the first blind runner from the Chinese mainland(大陆) to finish the world’s oldest annual marathon event.
Gong Yunfeng and Lu Wei were Yan’s long-time partners. “I really admire his optimism(乐观) and persistence(坚持). He lives like a child. When you talk to him, you never think he’s blind,” said Lu.
