1. Many students ask for advice about how to improve their English. 很多学生请求得到关于提高他们英语学习的建议。(课本第4页activity2)
(1) ask for意为“请求,恳求,要求”。
例:She asked for a bicycle for her birthday.
她要求一辆自行车作为生日礼物。
After dinner I asked for coffee.
晚餐后,我要了咖啡.
拓展:ask sb. for sth. 意为“向某人请求……”,这也是一个常用的短语。
例:They asked me for help.
他们向我求助。
He asked his parents for a motorcycle.

(2) improve意为“提高;改善;使……进步”,可用作及物或不及物动词。
例:I want to improve my English ( vt.)

She is improving in health markedly.

watching films和listening to songs是两个动名词短语一起作主语。动名词短语作主语时,谓语动词要用第三人称单数形式。
例:Reading in the sun is bad for your eyes. 在阳光下看书对你的眼睛有害。
3. I am shy and I am afraid to speak to her. 我很害羞,我不敢和她说话。(课本第4页activity2)
(1) shy adj. 害羞的,腼腆的。
例:She is a shy girl. 她是一个害羞的女孩。
(2) afraid adj.害怕的,be afraid to do sth. 是一个固定搭配,意为“害怕做某事,不敢做某事”。
例:Don’t be afraid to ask for help. 不要怕求人帮忙。
【固定搭配】be afraid of sth. 害怕某事/物。
例:I’m always afraid of dogs. 我一直怕狗。
4. You should smile at her. 你应该对她微笑。(课本第4页activity2)
smile at sb. 意为“朝某人微笑”。在这个短语中,smile是动词,意为“微笑”,smile还有名词词性。
例:He had a big smile on his face. 他笑容满面。
5. I suggest you write four or five words a day on pieces of paper and place them in your room. 我建议你一天在纸上写四或五个单词然后把它们放在你的房间里。(课本第4页activity2)
