Richie Anne Castillo is a Filipino girl. Her father has down syndrome(唐氏综合征). He also has other health problems. As a result, he has always been in and out of the hospital. But he seldom complains. Her father’s illness used to make her unhappy when she was young.
On her father’s 50th birthday, she wrote a letter to him. And she shared it online telling everyone how much she loves her father. She said that it took years before she had the courage to face the truth about her father and her situation. The letter has moved a lot of people!
Dear Daddy,
I want the whole world to know how beautiful you are inside and out.
Daddy, when I was a little girl, you were the same as other fathers in my eyes. But as I grew older, I realized that your illness brought me so much trouble in my daily life. I didn’t understand why other kids were making fun of me. I was not brave enough to face this problem! It took me a long time to understand this. Now I known that you deserve(值得)people’s understanding and love.
Daddy, you are so brave and strong to face your illness every day. You are the strongest and bravest man I know. You always put a smile on your face after a long day at the hospital. I cannot imagine putting myself in your shoes.
Happy 50th birthday, Daddy! Thanks for always calling me your one and only baby girl because I always will be. I am strong and brave because of you and I love you so much.
Your sweetheart,
Richie

The morning of December 26th was warm and sunny on Phi Phi Don Island (岛) in Thailand. The sunshine was a welcome change from the wet, rainy weather at home. After breakfast, we went to the beach. My parents played volleyball and I ran straight into the clear water. I had great fun.
Suddenly, I heard a roar (咆哮). Then I saw a big wave (海浪). “Mark, run!” I heard my mom shout before the big wave came to me. In no time I was under the water. I tried to get out of the water, but I couldn’t. Luckily, a hand pulled (拉) me up. I breathed and looked around. I was in a tree with a Thai man.
I was shocked and was not able to move. The only thing I could do was sit and watch. The hours passed slowly. Suddenly, both the Thai man and I saw a plane and we started shouting. The pilot (飞行员) saw us and came to save us. Half an hour later we were in the hills. A lot of people were there. I felt lonely and lost. Just then, my mom ran to me and said, “Mark, you’re here.” I was relieved (放心的) at that time. Two days later we left the island. When an Italian man went to work with a mask (口罩) to protect himself from the COVID-19 (新冠肺炎), other people criticized (批评) him for “causing panic (恐慌)”. But in China and other Asian countries, almost everyone wears a mask during outbreaks. Why do the East and the West have different ideas about wearing masks
In the West, people wear masks only when they get sick. If a person goes out with a mask, other people may look at him like a virus (病毒) spreader. Even their friends tried to stay away from them. Some Western people say wearing a mask in public makes them feel “worried”, “shy”, and “afraid of being looked at differently”. But as the number of COVID-19 cases (病例) keeps growing around the world, more and more healthy people are starting to wear masks to protect themselves.
In Asian countries like China and Japan, wearing masks is common. During the 2003 SARS, people used masks widely in China and East Asia. Many Chinese also wear masks to keep warm in winter or protect against air pollution. In Japan, some young women may wear masks when they don’t have their makeup on. Many pop stars in Asia also wear masks to protect their privacy when they go out. This cultural background has made it easier for people in the East to wear masks during the COVID-19 outbreak.

A.abc B.acd C.abd D.bcd
14.The passage is mainly about .

B.the reasons why masks are popular in Asian culture
C.different ideas of using masks in Eastern and Western countries
D.the importance of wearing masks during the COVID-19 outbreak

Traditionally, baby boys are dressed in blue and baby girls are dressed in pink. We are taught this as children.
But as you grow up, this idea doesn’t mean much anymore. Take me, for example, I often wear pink or purple shirts. In fact, I’m wearing a pink shirt while I write this story!
While children might make fun of a boy wearing a pink shirt, I believe there really are no rules about what colors a man or woman can wear. That’s how it is in Australia and I’ve found it to be the case in China as well. There are more and more people who are quite happy to wear lots of creative things. Some men in China and Australia pay as much attention to their appearance as women.
But if you think the idea of boys wearing pink is something new, think again. It isn’t original at all. Kassia St Clair, the writer of The Secret Lives of Color, said it was very different in the 19th century. She explains that pink was a color worn by men in the military(军队). Blue, she says, was the color for girls.
Somehow, over the following 100 years, this has changed a lot. But whatever the story is today, don’t let it stop you from wearing whatever color you want!
15.Baby boys typically wear ________ clothes.
A.pink B.purple C.blue D.yellow
16.The writer might be ________.
A.a woman B.a man C.a Chinese person D.a soldier
17.The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 means ________.
A.children can wear clothes in many different colors. B.pink is only for girls.
C.boys cannot wear colorful clothes. D.people can wear whatever colors they like.
18.Paragraph 4 explains that ________.
A.girls used to wear pink clothes. B.boys wore pink clothes in the past.
C.popular colors have changed over time. D.boys used to wear blue clothes.
19.What’s the writer’s opinion
A.There are no rules for what colors we should wear.
B.It’s uncommon for boys to wear pink clothes.
C.Men should act differently from women.
D.The difference between boys and girls is important.
