Teaching aims:
1. Find the main points of the poster.
2. Get more information by reading and listening.
3. Know how Chinese people in Chinatown, New York celebrate Chinese New Year.
4. Talk about the festival posters and make postcards.
Teaching difficulties:
Practice students’ listening, speaking, reading, explaining and acting abilities.
Teaching procedures:
Step 1 Self-study
Ask the group leader to check the new words on Page 63\64, and give points to their group members.
Step 2 Presentation
1. Tell students that our class will have a “Festival Week”, use some pictures and help them have a quick revision about different festivals.
2. Know how we celebrate the Chinese New Year in China, and ask whether they know how Chinese people in Chinatown, New York celebrate the Chinese New Year.
Step 3 Tasks
Task 1. Ask them to read the poster on Page63 and answer three questions.
(1)When will they hold the party (On Saturday, February 9.)
(2)Where are they going to have the party (In Chinatown, New York.)
(3)What do they do at the party
(They watch a lion dance, have a nice Chinese dinner, enjoy fireworks and a music and dance show.)
Task 2. Ask Ss to listen to a radio programme broadcasted in New York where
Wendy is joining the Chinese New Year celebrations and fill in the table. Play the
recording and ask Ss to listen for the missing details and then play the recording
again if necessary. Check it at last.
Task 3. Complete the postcard
Wendy is on holiday in New York, she is writing a postcard to Millie about the
Chinese New Year celebrations, help Wendy complete her postcard. look at Wendy’s
postcard and fill in as many of the blanks as possible from memory. Then tell them to
look back at the poster and the table on P63 to complete the postcard. Check answers
and ask Ss where they got their answers from. Ask several Ss to read out the postcard,
checking for correct pronunciation.
Task 4 Group work
From the poster of Chinese New Year, we know how Chinese people in Chinatown, New York celebrate this festival. Do you want to know more about other festivals Before our festival week, I ask you to design a poster. Work in groups, talk about your posters and put the posters on the blackboard. Pay attention to the name, activities, date and place of the poster.
