Teaching Procedures Tips
Step 1 Warming up
Free Talk Ask Ss to work in pairs or in groups of four, then discuss the questions: Do you like watching TV What kind of TV shows do you know Revision Show Ss expressions of TV shows, help them to have a review. Pair work Step 1: Tell Ss that they are going to make a survey about TV shows. Step 2: Ask Ss to walk around in the classroom, find a partner and practice the conversation on PPT P7. Step 3: When they finished practicing the conversation with one person, ask them to find a different partner. Tell Ss that they are encouraged to say more about their attitudes towards a certain kind of TV show. T can show Ss some sample conversations (PPT P8-P10) when necessary.
Step 2 Presentation & Practice
While-listening 2a Ask Ss to listen to the conversation and number the TV show in order. T can make activity 2a easier or more difficult in the following ways: Listen with textbooks closed; no note-taking allowed; do the activity (difficult) Listen with textbooks closed; note-taking allowed; do the activity (less difficult) Listen with text books open (least difficult) Answers: 1. sitcoms 4. game shows 5. soap operas 2. news 3. talk shows 2b Play the recording again and ask Ss to complete the sentences in activity 2b. Ss may be able to perform better in activity 2b if they have chance to read the sentences and try to guess what kinds of words might be used to complete the sentences. This type of preparation can be done individually, in pairs or as a class. Answers: 1. the news or talk shows 2. some great jokes 3. game shows 4. soap operas, tonight Post-listening Show Ss listening material and ask them to role-play the conversation. 2c Ask Ss to answer the questions about the TV shows in 2a. T may want to elicit from Ss as a class some correct questions and answers in order to facilitate conversations about each kind of TV show listed in 2a: A: Do you plan to watch __________ (a sitcom, a soap opera, a game show, a talk show, the news) tonight B: Yes, I like watching _________. I watch __________ (them, it) every night. A: Why B: Because ___________. How about you A: I like watching ____________ because _____________. Work in pairs Step 1: Tell Ss that they need to work in groups of four. Step 2: Ask Ss to pair up in their own group. (e.g. S1 and S2, S3and S4) Step3: Ask Ss to complete and role-play the conversation. Step 4: When all the Ss in a group have finished, ask them to switch partners and do the activity again.
Step 3 Presentation & Reading
2d Ask Ss to pair up and role-play the conversation. Before Ss practice the conversation in activity 2d, T may want to conduct a poll in class to find out what Ss’ favorite TV shows are and why. These should be written on the board. Then scaffold the dialog to suit the information for the Ss. Ask Ss to read the conversation again and match the persons with their favorite TV show. Answers: Grace: soap opera, Sarah: news and talk shows, Grace’s classmates: game shows and sports shows Get Ss to read the conversation for another time and answer the following questions. T can remind Ss to focus more on details this time. What are Grace and Sarah talking about They are talking about TV shows. What does Grace think of game shows and sports shows She can’t stand them. What does Grace think of soap operas What does Sarah think of them Grace loves soap operas. Sarah doesn't mind soap operas. What are Sarah’s favorite TV shows Why does Grace think of them Sarah’s favorite TV shows are the news and talk shows. Grace thinks they are boring.
Step 4 Language points learning
plan vt. & vi. “计划,打算”, 常用搭配为plan to do sth. 计划做某事 plan 还可作名词,如:make plans 制定计,according to plan 根据计划。 hope to do sth. 希望做某事,hope无双宾语, 但其后可以接一个宾语从句。 find和find out的区别在于:find的意思是“找到;发现”,强调寻找的结果;find out的意思是“查明;弄清”,指通过思考、调查或研究后搞清楚、弄明白。 “动词+out”的其他短语有:go out 熄灭,put out 扑灭,look out 当心,hand out 分发,run out 用光;用尽,take out 取消,work out 解决;算出,give out 分发;散发。 expect to do sth. 期待做某事,expect sth. / sb. 期待、等待某事 / 某人, expect sb. to do sth. 期望某人做某事,expect+that从句 期待...... learn from 后可以接人也可以接事物,learn from sb. 向某人学习, learn from sth. 从某事中学习 discussion n.讨论,商量, have a discussion about / on sth. 就某事展开讨论, have a discussion with sb. 和某人讨论 happen v. 发生,出现,常指 (不好的事) 偶然发生, sth. happens / happened to sb.某人发生了什么事。take place也有“发生;举行”的意思,它与happen的区别在于take place多指计划好的活动举行了。
Step 5 Summary & Homework
Summary Ask Ss to do the exercises from PPT P30-31. Homework Read and recite the conversation in 2d. Do the exercises in students’ book.
Teaching Reflection By browsing the vocabulary of 2a and the sentences of 2b, the students can predict the answers to the blanks in 2b.In the process of listening, guide the students to quickly capture and record useful information and guide them to pay attention to voice tone. Through 2c and 2d dialogue practice, the students can practice the target language and consolidate their vocabulary and sentence patterns.
