Being the boss might mean more money and challenging work but it can also cause damage to physical and mental well-being, according to a Canadian study.
For years studies have shown people in lower-status jobs generally have higher rates of heart disease and other illnesses and die earlier than those in higher-status positions while job authority has shown no relationship with workers’ health.
But University of Toronto researchers, using data from 1,800 US workers, found the health of people in higher positions is affected by work as they are more likely to report conflicts with co-workers and say work disturbs their home life.
However, the positive aspects of having a power position at work, such as higher status, more pay and greater independence, seemed to cancel out the negative aspects when it came to people’s physical and psychological health.
These latest findings, reported in the journal Social Science & Medicine, suggest that the advantages and disadvantages authority positions basically cancel each other out, giving the general impression that job authority has no health effects.
For the study, the researchers surveyed participants about various aspects of their work, life and well-being. Job authority was judged based on whether a person managed other employees and had power over hiring, firing and pay.
Physical health complaints included problems like headaches, body aches, heartburn and tiredness. Psychological complaints included sleep problems, difficulty concentrating and feelings of sadness, worry and anxiety.
“This isn’t to suggest that having authority is ‘bad’—in fact, we show it has benefits ... but it is important to identify the negative sides and deal with them.” researcher Scott Schieman said.
Schieman said conflicts with co-workers or involvement of work into home life may destroy at physical and mental well-being by creating stress.
“These are key stressors that can tax individuals’ ability to fun_ction effectively,” Schieman said.
59. Work will have a negative effect on job authority’s health probably because __________.
A. they are not fit for their work
B. they have power over hiring and pay
C. they don’t get on well with their co-workers
D. they are faced with severe competition
60. Most people don’t see that bosses have health effects because __________.
A. their health problems are not serious enough to see
B. the advantages and disadvantages of their status work against each other
C. their problems are quite different from those of workers
D. they have enough money to keep themselves healthy
61. From the passage we can infer that the study aims to _________.
A. warn people not to be a boss for ever
B. prove that being a boss can benefit a lot
C. show that having authority is harmful to one’s health
D. remind the boss to deal with the bad effects of their work
62. The best title for this passage might be ________.
A. Lower-status can affect health B. Disadvantages of being a boss
C. Positive aspects of a power position D. Authority can affect health

If you’re not making mistakes, you’re not trying hard enough.
It’s good to make mistakes. That’s not a typo, folks, and I have not lost my mind. It is good to make mistakes, and here’s why.
First of all, mistakes are a clear sign that you are trying new things. It’s always good to try new things because when you are trying new things you are growing. If you never try anything new, how can you improve? How can you expand? How can you innovate? The simple answer is, “You can’t.” Look around you. With very few exceptions, either everything you see in your physical world or every single detail of every single thing is the result of someone trying something new.
Another good thing about mistakes is this, when you are making mistakes, you are learning. Consider this: Edison failed 10,000 times before he perfected the light bulb. When asked how he felt to fail that many times, he remarked that he hadn’t failed 10,000 times, but rather had learned 10,000 things that didn’t work.
Finally, when you make a mistake you are that much closer to success. Why? Because when all is said and done, you will have tried some finite number of things before you succeeded. Every time you made a mistake you eliminated(消除) one of those things and are one step closer.
But this all doesn’t mean that you should forge ahead with disregard for the consequences of a mistake. Quite the contrary, when you try something new you have to be willing to set some reasonable limits so that, in the event that it doesn’t work out the way you want it to, you will be in a position to try again.
We all have limited resources in the form of time and money, so don’t blow them all on one approach to a problem. Realize that it probably won’t be perfect the first time and allocate these resources appropriately so you can learn, modify, and try it again. Only by embracing and using your mistakes in this way can you make significant advances in your business and your career.
There is an old axiom that goes, “If you’re not making mistakes, you’re not trying hard enough.”
So go forth and make mistakes. And learn. And grow, And prosper.
63. Which of the following is NOT suitable for the passage?
A. Mistakes suggest that people are trying something new.
B. People can afford to make mistakes as long as they limit them.
C. Mistakes mean that people are getting closer to success.
D. People can draw lessons from their mistakes.
64. The underlined word “typo” means ___________.
A. poor handwriting B. computer error
C. printing mistake D. bad typing
65. It’s good to make mistakes as long as _________.
A. they don’t have side effects B. people avoid them quickly
C. they help people get well D. people use them positively
66. What does the writer mainly tell us in the passage as far as mistakes are concerned?
A. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes. They are beneficial.
B. Try your best to make fewer mistakes. They are expensive.
C. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes. They are unavoidable.
D. The more mistakes you make, the more advances you’ll make.

When does competition help our performance, and when does it hurt?
The authors of the bestselling NurtureShock explore the benefits of what they call “competitive fire”. But sometimes, it turns out that competing against others can actually make our performance worse.
In an experiment, researchers gave 124 Princeton University underclassmen a test that drew its questions from the GRE. For some of the students, the investigators added to the stress of this difficult exam in two ways. First, the students were asked to report how many of their high school classmates were also at Princeton. “This was intended to make most test-takers feel as if they were alone at Princeton and that they had barely made the bar for admittance,” Bronson and Merryman explained.
Second, researchers further added to students’ stress by labeling the test as an “Intellectual(智力的) Ability Questionnaire.” Bronson and Merryman said, “they wanted the test’s title to make the students fear that, if they did poorly, the test would reveal they lacked true ability to be at Princeton.” The other group answered the questions about high school only after the test, and their exam went by the less threatening name “Intellectual Challenge Questionnaire”.
Students in the first group answered 72% of the questions correctly; those in the second group got 90% of their answers right.
There are many such findings. Take a classic study of the phenomenon known as “stereotype threat”(成见威胁), the fear felt by members of certain groups that a poor performance will confirm a negative stereotype about them—“girls aren’t good at math” or black people aren’t college material”. The study had groups of students, both white and black, take the same test. Some participants were told that the test would evaluate their intellectual abilities; others were told that it was a laboratory puzzle task that did not assess ability. Black students who thought their intelligence was being evaluated did worse on the test than white students, while black students who believed they were simply figuring out puzzles did much better, equaling the white students’ scores.
At other times, things may change for the worse without competition. In the mid-1990s, the headmaster of the U.S. Air Force Academy became concerned that the number of cadets(军校学员) experiencing academic trouble was on the rise. So the academy deliberately grouped cadets having lower GPAs and SAT scores with cadets who’d achieved high scores. The action was a failure. The low-performing cadets actually did worse than before. Why? Unable to compete with their high-flying mates, the low-performers gave up trying. Bronson and Merryman explained, “Contests only work when it’s a close race.”
Human beings are sensitive to context, specially when we’ re performing. When you feel stressed or threatened, you can try mentally considering the situation as a game or a challenge. But when we feel strong and capable, we can use the drive of competition to reach new heights.
67. The opinion on competition from the authors of NurtureShock is _______.
A. baseless B. one-sided C. objective D. trustworthy
68. How did the students feel when asked how many of their high school classmates were also at Princeton?
A. They felt stressed. B. They felt a bit lonely.
C. They felt highly respected. D. They felt extremely proud.
69. The cadets with lower GPAs and SAT scores did worse than before because_____.
A. they were not really university material
B. there was a lack of competition among them
C. competition among the cadets had become fiercer
D. their high-flying mates were not ready to help them
70. Which of the following shows the organization of the passage?’

第四部分 任务型阅读(共10小题,每小题1分,满分10分)
请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入最恰当
单词。注意:每个空格只填一个单词。
Generally speaking, there are good realtors(房屋中介)and bad realtors out there. If you are thinking about buying or selling a house, a good realtor is necessary, especially in this economic society. And a good realtor can get you the best price for your home. Also, you need a realtor that is going to get you the best deal on your new house too. Gone are the days when people could sell and buy their own houses. It’s much better to find a realtor if you’re planning on buying or selling a house.
Interview
When you want a realtor to help you buy or sell a house, you first essentially hire the person to do a job for you. At the end, part of your closing costs will be a fee that you pay your realtor. As with anyone providing you with a service, you need to interview your realtor before you get started with the buying or selling process. You can ask a lot of things in an interview, especially when you go in with questions prepared. You can ask how many houses the realtor has bought or sold in the past month, or where he or she usually works. You might also want to know a little about his or her family life.
Don’t Be Afraid to Ask
When you have questions, you shouldn’t be afraid to ask your realtor. They’re there to answer any question you have. It is quite important if you are buying or selling your first house. Your realtor should walk with you through the process, but he or she can’t possibly know all of the questions you might have. If you feel like you can’t ask your realtor questions, it’s probably time to find someone new.
Show Great Honesty
Honesty is the best policy, and that goes for buying and selling a house, too. When you are selling a house, you need to tell certain problems—like water damage—to your realtor and the buyers. If you try to hide this information, you’ll be facing legal issues down the line. Also, if you are casually looking at houses, or if you need to move right away, tell your realtor that during your discussions about buying a house. Your realtor will work around the clock to get you into a great place. But if you’re not ready to buy quite yet, they deserve to know that too.
In a word, if you can do the above things, you may find a really good realtor.
