A Christmas Carol is a famous novel written by Charles Dickens. He just cares about whether he can make more money.
Marley used to be just like Scrooge, so he was punished after he died.

Step 2 Reading (2a-2e)
1.What do you know about Christmas Discuss in groups and create a mind map.
2.T:You have known something about Christmas. Do you know the spirit of Christmas Now please skim the passage in 2b (about three minutes) and find the answers to the following questions.
Q1:What are the common things that people think of for Christmas
Q2:Who wrote A Christmas Carol
Q3:What is the true meaning or spirit of Christmas
Make sure the students can understand the meanings of the questions, and ask the students to read the passage as quickly as they can to find the answers.
S1:They usually think of gifts, Christmas trees and Santa Claus.
S2:Charles Dickens (wrote A Christmas Carol).
S3:The true meaning of Christmas is: the importance of sharing and giving love and joy to people around us. (The spirit of Christmas is: to treat everyone with kindness and warmth, spreading love and joy everywhere.)
3.Let the students read the passage again very carefully and complete the chart in 2c individually. Then discuss their answers in pairs and correct the answers together. At first, read the questions and answers in pairs.

4.Ask the students to go through the questions in 2d, and make sure the students understand the meanings of the questions.

The students answer the questions, inferring some answers if they can. Then discuss their answers in
groups.
S1:Because he just cares about whether he can make more money and he doesn’t treat others nicely.
S2:No, he doesn’t. Because he is mean and only thinks about himself.
S3:Because he used to be like Scrooge, only thinking about himself and never treating others nicely.
S4:Yes, he does. He warns Scrooge to change his life ways if he doesn’t want to end up like him.
S5:He feels very scared.
S6:He changes his life and promises to be a better person. He happily celebrates Christmas with his relatives. He also gives gifts to people in need.
5.Ask the students to read the passage again and find some key words and sentences. In pairs or in groups they discuss firstly. After that, the teacher should emphasize something important and difficult.
6.Ask the students a question: What do you think the three ghosts say to Scrooge when they visit him
In groups of four, the students make a conversation between the three ghosts and Scrooge. Then retell the story.
