Different countries have different customs in giving presents. In China you must never give a clock to a Chinese person, because the pronunciation of the word for “clock” in Chinese is similar to the pronunciation of “death”.Also, don’t wrap (用……包裹) a present in white, black, or blue paper, because they are the colours for funerals (葬礼).Don’t give a knife, because something sharp can cut a friendship.
In Russia if you give flowers as presents, you have to give an odd number of them (One, Three, five, etc.) because even numbers of flowers are for funerals.
In Germany if you are invited to dinner, flowers are good presents to take to your dinner hostess (女主人), but don’t take her red roses because it means you are in love with her. Don’t take thirteen of anything because it’s an unlucky number. Don’t take an even number of anything, either. Don’t wrap your presents in white, brown, or black paper.

However, in some countries, tipping is the norm. That’s the way it is in the US. It’s said to be good manners to tip your waiter, taxi driver, hairdresser, which can really put your math skills to the test! But we usually give a tip that is 15-20% of the bill.

There are many deserts (沙漠) on the earth. And the following are some facts you may find interesting.
What are deserts like
Deserts can be hot and dry places. Rain may not fall there for months or years. Some deserts are sandy and stony (多石的). Deserts can also be very windy places. The wind can change the shape of the deserts. It moves sand around from place to place.
Temperatures in the desert can vary enormously(非常). During the daytime, the temperature may reach 40℃ even in the shade (阴凉处). At night, deserts can become very cold. In winter there may even be a frost (霜冻) in the early morning.
Living in the desert
The camel is sometimes called “the ship of the desert”. It stores food in its hump (驼峰) and can go for days without water. It has large feet which help it not to fall into the soft sand. Its long eyelashes (睫毛) keep out the sand during sandstorms.
An oasis is an area of the desert where water may be found. The water may be in pools or under the ground. People and animals visit an oasis for water and food. Plants grow at an oasis. Some farmers are able to grow crops here.
The Arabian Desert
The Arabian Desert lies between the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf. In some parts of the desert, it is too hot for people to live. Oil was discovered under parts of the desert and in the Arabian Gulf. This oil has made some countries in the area very rich. Much of the money has been spent building fine cities with lovely parks and lakes, and people live a comfortable life there.

Do you know anyone born in the Year of the Tiger What are they like Are they brave and strong If so, then they are really a “tiger”.
In Chinese culture, tigers are considered the king of all the animals. They stand for power(力量)and protection. So that’s why you can see pictures of tigers on the walls of houses in China. They are to protect us from danger.
Tigers have an important cultural meaning not just in China, but across Asia. As they mostly live in Asia, for many people in the West they have become a symbol(标志)of Eastern countries. For example, Singapore, South Korea, China’s Hong Kong and China’s Taiwan were called “The Four Asian Tigers”. In the book Life of Pi, the Canadian writer Yann Martel chose a tiger to go on the adventure(冒险)with the Indian boy Pi in the Pacific Ocean.
In the West, lions are considered the king of all the animals. But tigers are also seen as a very powerful animal. In English, if you want someone not to be so angry, you can say to them, “Easy Tiger”. And “Eye of the Tiger” means great power.
It’s sad that tigers are in danger now. Just like tigers serve as a symbol of protection in Chinese culture, we can only hope that in the Year of the Tiger more people can learn about tigers and help protect them and their homes.
34.What do tigers stand for in both Chinese and English cultures

Now Yangzhou has changed a lot. Many people have their own cars. The environment has become more beautiful. The sky has turned bluer and the roads wider. People in Yangzhou today behave politely in public places. Every year, thousands of people from all over the world come to visit Yangzhou.
I’m sure Yangzhou will become better and better in the future.
