April Fool’s Day is coming! But do you know how April Fool’s Day comes
In the sixteenth century in France, the start of the New Year was on April 1st. People celebrated the New Year in the same way as it is today. They held parties and danced into the late night.
Then in 1562, Pope Gregory introduced a new calendar into the Christian(基督教的)world, and the new year fell on January 1st. Some people didn’t believe the change in the date, so they celebrated the New Year on April 1st. Others played tricks on them and called them “April fools”.
Today Americans play small tricks on friends on the first day of April. One common trick on April Fool’s Day is pointing down to a friend’s shoe and saying, “Your shoelace is untied.” School children like to tell a classmate that there are no classes. Then if someone believes the trick, he or she will be called the “April fool”! People play tricks on each other only because they want to enjoy themselves together. Most jokes are really funny and people play tricks not to hurt anyone but to find happiness.

Easter Day, which fell on April 5th this year, dates back to 325 AD.It is celebrated by hundreds of millions of people around the world. In my family, it is considered as the greatest holiday of a year.
Every Easter my brothers and I wake up early and , like on Christmas morning, run downstairs to see what surprises are waiting for us. We are always excited when the Easter Bunny, who is like Father Christmas, comes and leaves us a basket of candy. It’s wonderful. It is like there is a miracle every Easter morning.
Our mother, however, doesn’t let us eat chocolate as much as we want. The chocolate bunnies and candy eggs have to wait. Instead, we have to get dressed in our new clothes.
Then my family go to church. After that we go to an elder family member’s house for a party. My mother’s family is from Eastern Europe, so we often eat many traditional European dishes. My favourite is ham and a special potato salad. We usually have 20 or more family members at the dinner.
After dinner, my cousins, brothers and I go outside. While we are sleeping the night before Easter, our parents have hidden plastic eggs in the backyard. The exact origin(起源)of the holiday is unclear. One of the thoughts is that during the Middle Ages, when great sailing ships were setting off to discover new land,a Christmas Box was placed by a priest (神父)on each ship. Those sailors who wanted to ensure a safe return would drop money into the box.It wassealed upand kept on board until the ship came home safely. Then the box was handed over to the priest in the exchange for the saying of a Mass of thanks for the success of the sailing. The priest wouldn’t open it to share the contents with the poor until Christmas.
One more thought is about the “Alms Box” placed in every church on Christmas Day. Worshippers (做礼拜的人)put gifts for the poor into it. These boxes were always opened the day after Christmas, that is why that day became know as Boxing Day.
Today, many businesses, organizations and families try to keep the traditional spirit of Boxing Day alive by donating(捐赠)their time, services and money to aid Food Banks, providing gifts for the poor,or helping families in need.Besides, spending time with family and shopping are popular Boxing Day activities now.
