威廉·莎士比亚（1564-1616）文艺复兴时期英国最伟大的诗人和剧作家。他出生于英国中部斯特拉特福镇的一个羊毛商的家庭。幼年在当地的文法学校里他开始接触戏剧，并对其发生浓厚兴趣。1585年前后在伦敦谋生，几年后进入剧院工作。在取得舞台工作经验之后，莎士比亚开始了戏剧创作工作。
莎士比亚在其勤奋的一生中共写了三十七部剧本，一百五十四首十四行诗和两首叙事长诗。主要的作品有：《罗密欧与朱丽叶》、《哈姆莱特》、《奥塞罗》、《李尔王》、《麦克白》和《雅典的泰门》等。

《哈姆雷特》又名《王子复仇记》他的叔叔为了夺取王位，把毒药倒进了国王也就是哈姆雷特的父亲的耳朵里，杀死了国王，娶了皇后也就是他的嫂子，哈姆雷特的母亲，哈姆雷特回国后，收到父亲的托梦，知道了真相。而此时的假国王也知道哈姆雷特想除掉他而想除掉哈姆雷特，假国王想借用比剑的机会，用有毒剑杀死哈姆雷特，若哈姆雷特没有被毒剑所伤，就以奖励为借口让哈姆雷特喝下放入钻石的美酒，当然钻石上涂有毒药。但是最终，哈姆雷特在比试中获胜，毒酒被他的母亲喝了，他杀死了他的叔叔，同时它也被毒剑刺中，牺牲了！
意大利维洛那城的凯普莱特和蒙太古两个家族有世仇，他们之间常常发生流血事件。一天，蒙太古的儿子罗密欧在化妆舞会上，与凯普莱特的女儿朱丽叶一见钟情。直到天亮，俩人才依依惜别。第二天，罗密欧把二人的感情告诉了修道院的劳伦斯长老。长老表示支持，并暗中主持婚礼，希望借此结束两家的宿怨。结婚的当天中午，罗密欧刺死了提伯尔特。这使两家的仇恨更加激化，罗密欧也因此遭放逐。罗密欧走后不久，凯普莱特就逼迫朱丽叶与帕里斯伯爵结婚。朱丽叶焦急万分，请求劳伦斯长老帮助。长老急中生智，一面让朱丽叶在婚前的夜晚服下他的假死药，一面派人送信给罗密欧，让他适时赶来带走朱丽叶。朱丽叶依计行事，可是送信的人却没有如期找到罗密欧。罗密欧得知朱丽叶死亡的消息连夜赶回，与先来凭吊朱丽叶的帕里斯发生误会，刺死了帕里斯，然后自饮毒酒死在朱丽叶身旁。劳伦斯神甫迟到了，他看到帕里斯罗密欧已死，追悔莫及，这时朱丽叶醒来，看到这一情景，便抓起罗密欧身上的匕首，刺进了自己胸膛。
亲王来到现场，弄清了真相，谴责了凯普莱特与蒙太古两家，于是两个仇家和解了。
