Section A (period 1 and period 2)
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
a) Grade 7, Junior high school students
b) There are 56 students in the class, around 13 or 14 years old
c) Time and Date of the lesson, 18th,April
d) Lesson duration, 45 minutes
e) Teaching contents are chosen from New Curriculum Standards PEP Edition Grade7 Unit7
f) Students have learned some basic words that used to describe someone’ s appearance, like tall, short, thin, hair, black, brown, big, small, eyes, nose etc.
TEACHING AIMS:
a) To be able to describe one’s appearance
b) To be able to distinguish different appearance and characteristics
c)To build such value that everyone is unique, we shouldn’t judge one by its cover
LANGUAGE CONTENS AND SKILLS:
a) New words---curly, straight, medium height, medium build, heavy
b) New structures---What do you look like I’m tall. I’m thin.
---What do they look like They’re of medium height
---What does he/she look like He/She is of medium build. He is tall. He has curly hair.
IMPORTANT POINTS: The new structures mentioned before
DIFFICULT POINTS: When to use “He/She is…” and when to use “He/She has…” both of them can be used to describe one’s appearance.
TEACHING STATEGIES:
a) Unify the situation and the language practice;
b) Unify the language skills like listening, speaking, reading, writing and the language abilities;
c) From shallower to deeper, from simpler to harder, from the known information to unknown ones;
d) Emphasize the important and difficult points; Cultivating students' initiative participation consciousness.
LEARNING STATEGIES:
To instruct students to do necessary prepares, like reviewing words and structures they have leant which are related to appearance;
to guide students to learn new words with the contents; to encourage students to use English as much as possible.

TEACHING AIDS: PPT, blackboard, chalks, four pieces of paper with pictures, the first is YaoMing are playing basketball and saying “关注篮球,关注CBA”; the second is Pang Changjiang is saying “浓缩的都是精华”; the third is GeYou holding a cellpone and saying “神州行,我看行” ; the last is Zhu Bajie is saying “我还是回我的高老庄去吧”

STAGE1, GREETINGS (1mins)
Good morning! How are you today

STAGE2, WARM-UP(4mins)
Firstly, in order to motivate students’ interests, I’ll use a game named “WHO IS HE ” to leading-in .
Choose four students (A, B, C, D)to act according to the prepared pictures one by one, tell other students that we are going to guess “who is he ” after the student’s action.
b) Give picture 1 to student A to look at, and then tell he/she to begin to act.
After the action, I’ll ask the other students the question “who is he ” and students begin to answer. If right, praise them; if wrong, give them some prompts.
Students B, C, D do as student A with different pictures.
Secondly, after the Ss have guessed out the name of Yao Ming, Pan Changjiang, Ge You, Zhu Bajie, I’ll ask the question “What do you think of Yao Ming/Pang Changjing--- ”
STAGE3, VOCABULARY REVIEW AND EXTEND (approx.5mins)
a) Ss use words which are already known to answer the question that I just gave. For example, Yao Ming—tall, CBA, and then, to introduce new words—heavy;
Pan Changjiang---short, new words—medium build;
Ge You— tall, thin;
Zhu Bajie—heavy, short.
b) Ss look at the PPT and read the new word after me(each 2 times).
STAGE4, STRUCTURE LEARNING (approx.5mins)
Use PPT to show the four prepared pictures which are Wang Lin, Mary, Xu Qian and Mike.
Ask Ss to tell the differences among them ,
And at the same time , I’ll write the new sentence structures on the blackboard, For instance: Wang Lin is tall.
He is of medium build.
He has short straight hair.(Page 43)
Finish Section A(3a)
From sentences written on the blackboard, Ss can get some information on how to use a sentence to describe one’s appearance.
At last, I’ll ask the question “if all these sentences are the answers, what question do we need ” then, lead to the sentence---“what does he/she look like ”(the important points of the lesson)
STAGE5, CONSOLIDATION EXERCISES (according to the textbook. approx. 10mins)
Vocabulary consolidation:Give Ss 3min to finish Section A (1a) and then check the answers.
Structure consolidation:
a) Finish Section A(1b)(2a)(2b)
b) check the answers. Here we need to analyze (2a) in details, tell Ss when the describing word is noun., use He/ She has… when the describing word is adj. we use He/ She is…(the difficult points of the lesson).
STAGE6, PRACTICAL APPLCATION (to end of lesson, 20mins)
Four Ss in one group, do the pairwork (3b),
Each group has two representatives to show their work .Using this part to check whether Ss have got the new knowledge or not.
CONCLUSION: Today, we have learned how to describe one’s appearance, but we need to know that everyone is unique no matter how you look like, we should not judge someone by its cover! Thank you!
HOMEWORK:
a) Choice 1, draw a set of pictures of different persons and then use English to describe it.
b) Choice 2, prepare the descriptions of three of your classmates, I’ll ask students to guess Who is he/she according to the descriptions next time.
