Unit 5 Into the wild
To learn to predict the content of a passage from the key words and pictures;
To read a passage and order the events;
To learn to guess an unfamiliar word’s meaning from its context;
To talk about the jobs that involve working with animals.
Yellowstone is America’s most iconic (标志性的) park, set up in 1872. The nation’s first and most famous national park sits on a giant underground volcano that has exploded three times in the last several million years, and it is still very active.
Yellowstone natural park
The park includes miles of lakes, canyons (峡谷), rivers, hot springs, and mountain ranges (山脉), making it one of the earth’s largest ecosystems. The park is at the center of a wildlife sanctuary (禁猎区) containing hundreds of species of popular and endangered animals. The park is also famous for its bears, wolves and bison (野牛) and elk herds.

* Wildlife - 7 species of ungulates (有蹄类动物 ), 2 species of bears and 67 other mammals, 322 species of birds, 16 species of fishes and of course the gray wolf.

Read the sentences from the passage and work out the meaning of the words in red.
Guessing tip: When you read an unfamiliar word, make sure that you read the whole sentence. Try to work out what type of word it is (noun, adjective, verb, etc), then use the words before and after it to help you guess the meaning.

Read the following sentences and work out the part of speech (词性) of the words in red. Then guess their meaning.

“Breathtaking” means something is extremely beautiful or amazing, often in a surprising way.

“Reflected” means that images can be seen on the surface of the mirror, glass or water.

“Frightening” means that something is making people feel afraid, anxious or nervous.
