Because it wants to inspire its readers.

The information included in Nick’s story is: what kind of sport Nick plays, how he got started with the sport, how he felt about the sport, what he’s done to improve, and what he hopes to achieve in the future.
本文的语篇类型属于记叙文narration, 介绍了作者(Nick)从不会滑冰到加入冰球队并志在夺取全国比赛冠军的故事。

I’ve been a sports nut since I was old enough to hold a ball. That’s why when my PE teacher presented me with the idea of joining the swimming team I decided to give it a shot and challenge myself a bit more. So I started going to swimming practice last June. At first I only regarded swimming as a hobby to enhance my physical fitness.

But soon I found I fell in love with it. Then, last week, I had my first swimming competition, in the 100m breaststroke. Standing tall at the head of the lane made me feel both nervous and excited. After the sound of the whistle, I dived in and began to swim with all my strength! Finally, I came in third place.
I was so happy for my achievement, and it proved that hard work pays off. I will keep on swimming, perhaps for the rest of my life. Not only because it makes me healthier and stronger, but also for the confidence and sense of achievement it has brought.
读后续写
阅读短文,根据情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Every so often, something happens that reminds you just how great our sport is. One of those things happened to me on a quiet summer morning. My wife and I were away for a long weekend, celebrating our first wedding anniversary (周年纪念日) at a popular holiday center in the Shawangunk Mountain range. It was a beautiful place.
I was training for a fall marathon (马拉松) at the time. So, I was a little anxious about the 14 miles of running I had planned for Sunday. Not about being able to run 14 miles, but about being able to do so in an unfamiliar place. We were surrounded by scenic wilderness (风景优美的荒野), according to the manager of our hotel, including 85 miles of trails (小路). Doing an easy 4-mile run was no problem. But I was very certain that I'd get lost trying to have a 14-mile run out there.
But you've got to do what you've got to do, so I set out early Sunday morning. The sun was shining, which was nice. If I was going to get lost, at least it would happen in fine weather.
The first few miles went well, despite a dead end and some backtracking. Then I saw them: A group of six or eight runners, on the same trail, headed right for me.
As we neared each other, we exchanged the usual nods and greetings (问候). Then I stopped and asked, “Umm ... How far are you going ”
“20 miles,” one of them said. “We just started.”
I eagerly said, “You mind if I ... uh ... join you for part of it ”
“Sure.”
So I did. Off we went. And what followed were 10 of the nicest miles I think I've ever run.
注意:
1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2. 续写部分分为两段,每段开头已写好;
Paragraph 1:
Time flew by, and my new friends — all locals — knew the trails well.

Paragraph 2:
After two hours, our group came to a place where the trail divided into two parts.

Time flew by, and my new friends — all locals — knew the trails well. I began to find that the trees on both sides of the trails were beautiful. Even the speed of our running was just right. We chatted here and there, as they told me about the trails and themselves. They asked about me and my wife, my work and my running, so we talked about those things too. Just like that, my morning run became a group activity. And it was happening so quickly without question. I really did enjoy it.
After two hours, our group came to a place where the trail divided into two parts. The locals told me they were going left to finish their 20-mile run; I needed to turn right, which would get me back to the hotel after just around 14 miles. I thanked them. They replied, “No problem” and “Have a good one”. As I ran off, one of them turned to call out, “Happy anniversary!” Then they disappeared from sight. I felt the warmth — not from the sun, but simply from being out there, running with some new friends.
Finish you own sports story based on the notes in Activity 6.
