Unit 6
Unit 6 Earth first
To discuss items that contribute to a carbon footprint.
To work together to discuss effective measures to reduce carbon emissions.
Do you know what carbon footprint is
A carbon footprint is the
total amount of greenhouse
gases (including carbon
dioxide and methane (沼气))
that are generated by our
actions.
The average carbon footprint for a person in the United States is 16 tons, one of the highest rates in the world. Globally, the average is closer to 4 tons. To have the best chance of avoiding a 2℃ rise in global temperatures, the average global carbon footprint per year needs to drop under 2 tons by 2050.
adj. 平均(数)的
Lowering individual carbon footprints from 16 tons to 2 tons doesn’t happen overnight! By making small changes to our actions, like eating less meat, driving less and drying our clothes outside, we can start making a big difference.
Look at the three items that contribute to a carbon footprint. Add any more you can think of.

transport
meat product
We should particularly avoid beef that has been shipped from far away. As crazy as this may sound, the livestock industry is actually accountable for 18% of greenhouse gas emissions. In particular, methane is a big problem when it comes to cattle raising. You don’t have to stop eating beef entirely, but consider saving it for special occasions. When you do eat beef, make sure that it is free-range and grass-fed, as this has both lower emissions and is better for the animal.
modern appliances
Make sure that you unplug your electronics when you are not using them.
plastic packaging
Taking longer shower
disposable chopsticks and lunch box
Creat a carbon footprint survey. Think of two questions and possible answers for each topic.
Carbon footprint survey
1 How often do you walk, cycle or take public
transport to school
Never (3) One to three times a week (2)
Almost every day (1)
2 How often do you eat beefsteak
Often (3) sometimes (2) seldom (1)
Carbon footprint survey
3 How long does it take you to take a shower
More than 15 minutes (3)
15 mimutes (2)
less than 15 minutes (1)
Carry out the survey and use the results to come up with ways to reduce carbon footprint.
The average score of our group is…
The result show that…
The biggest problem is…
We’re glad to see that…
In order to…, we suggest…
Report the results of your survey and your ideas to the class. Use the expressions to help you.
Low carbon living
After completing this unit, I can rate my performance 1(excellent), 2(good) or 3 (in need of improvement).
□ talk about enviromental issues
□ interrupt some politely
□ write a persuasive letter to raise
awareness of an environmental issue
□ challenge views or assumptions and
make informed decisions
□ live a greener life at home and at school
I’ve learnt to make use of the following words and expressions.
