Teaching aims:
1. Knowledge: To learn words and expressions related to life in a British school and an American school.
2. Ability: To learn about school lives in a British school and an American school.
3. Emotion: To understand the writers’ feelings and opinions.
Teaching difficulties:
To learn to identify specific information about school life.
Teaching methods:
Task-based method, free discussion method and student-centered method.
Teaching preparations:
1. Multimedia courseware and aids, projector, class paper;
2. Ss have some general ideas of these two different kinds of school lives.
Teaching procedures:
Step 1 Lead-in
1. Free talk
Talk with Ss about their ideas and feelings about their school lives.
2. Present a short movie about American school life to arouse Ss’ interest in this topic and get them have a general idea of it.
3. Lead to these two kinds of school lives.
Step 2 Presentation
Task 1: Pre-reading
1. Teach new words by presenting pictures and giving hints;
2. Read the new words together.
Task 2: While-reading
1. Skimming: answer general questions
Ask Ss to answer general questions about these two kinds of school lives;
2. Scanning: answer true or false questions
Play the flash and ask Ss to answer true or false questions;
3. Brainstorming
Play a word game between boys and girls to judge who the winner is and finally form a complete sentence—Different schools have different subjects and activities;
4. Read about Nancy—Life in a British school
(1.) Fast reading
Play the tape of “Life in a British school” and ask Ss to read silently after it to find information about Nancy;
(2.) Careful reading
Ask Ss to read about the Reading Week and get more information about it;
(3.) Pair work
Make a dialogue to introduce Nancy’s school life.
5. Read about John—Life in an American school
(1.) Fast reading
Play the tape of “Life in an American school” and ask Ss to read silently after it to find information about John;
(2.) Careful reading
Ask Ss to read about the Buddy Club and the sports and get more information about it.
Step 3 Consolidation
Task 3: Post-reading
(1.) Ask Ss to fill in the blanks to give a brief conclusion of Nancy and John’s school life.
Step 4 Practice
(2.) Discussion
Set a situation for Ss to express their understanding and own ideas of these two kinds of school lives;
(3.) Reading comprehension
Present a writing of a student’s school life and ask Ss to do the multiple choices about it;
(4.) Conclude some reading skills from the reading material for Ss to use afterwards.
