Last year, a group of elephants decided to go north! After months of traveling, they made it nearly 500 kilometers away from their home in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan. And it seems that they are not going to stop their trip anytime soon.
“Asian elephants often stay in certain areas. It’s very rare(罕见的) to see them travel such a long way,” said Chen Mingyong, a life science professor at Yunnan University.
Scientists are still not sure why they are doing this. Some believe it’s because they are looking for better food. Some scientists also believe that they are traveling because of migratory instinct(迁徙本能). Chen added, “Maybe they got lost.”
Now Asian elephants are in danger. We need to protect them. To make sure the safety of both humans and the elephants, people have fed the elephants lots of food to guide them away from towns and cities.
