The two boys ran so fast that they seemed to fly. They ran into an old building and shut the door. They decided they should say nothing about what they saw. If they told anybody about Injun Joe, he might come and kill them. Tom wrote on a piece of wood:
“Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer agree they will never talk about this. If they do, they hope to drop down dead.”
They cut their fingers and signed on the wood with their blood. Tom helped Huckleberry to write his name because Huckleberry couldn't write. Then they buried the wood near the door.
When Tom got back to his room that night, Sid saw him but pretended (假装) to be asleep. Tom got into bed and fell asleep. The next morning, Aunt Polly was very sad. Sid had told her that Tom was out all night, and she cried. She did not hit Tom, and made Tom feel very bad. He went to school, but he sat sadly in the classroom.
At lunchtime, the news came to town that Dr. Robinson had been killed in the graveyard and a knife had been found next to his body. Somebody remembered seeing Muff wash in the river that morning. This was unusual because Muff did not wash very often.
Everybody went to the graveyard. They all thought Muff Potter had killed Dr. Robinson.
“He’ll hang for this ” they said.
Then Muff came to the graveyard, too. He looked at the dead man.
“I didn’t do it!” he said. He began to cry.
Then he saw Injun Joe was also there and lost hope. “Tell them, Joe! It’s no use!”
Tom and Huckleberry heard Joe tell everybody that Muff had killed the doctor. They couldn’t believe that he could tell such lies. Surely, God would strike him dead!

Oliver Twist was born in a workhouse, and when he arrived in this hard world, it was very doubtful whether he would live beyond the first three minutes. He lay on a hard little bed and struggled to start breathing.
Oliver fought his first battle without much help from the two people present at his birth. One was an old nurse, who was nearly always drunk, and the other was a busy local doctor, who was not paid enough to be very interested in Oliver's survival. 1
However, Oliver managed to draw his first breath, and then announced his arrival to the rest of the workhouse by crying loudly. His mother raised her pale young face from the pillow and whispered, “Let me see the child.”
The doctor turned away from the fire, where he had been warming his hands. “You must not talk about dying yet,” he said to her kindly. He gave her the child to hold. Lovingly, she kissed the baby on its forehead with her cold white lips, then stared wildly around the room, fell back and died. “Poor dear!” said the nurse, hurriedly putting a green glass bottle back in the pocket of her long skirt.
The doctor began to put on his coat. “The baby is weak and will probably have difficulties,” he said. “If so, give it a little milk to keep it quiet.” Then he looked at the dead woman.
“The mother was a good-looking girl. Where did she come from ”
“She was brought here last night,” replied the old woman. “She was found lying in the street. She'd walked some distance, judging by her shoes, which were worn to pieces. Where she came from, where she was going to, or what her name was, nobody knows.”
The doctor lifted the girl's left hand. “The old story,” he said sadly, shaking his head. “No wedding ring, I see. Ah! Good night.”
And so Oliver was left with only the drunken nurse. Without clothes, under his first blanket, he could have been the child of a king or a beggar. But when the woman dressed him later in rough cotton clothes, yellow with age, he looked exactly what he was—an orphan (孤儿) in a workhouse, ready for a life full of illness, hunger, and neglect (忽视).
Oliver cried loudly. If he could have known that he was a workhouse orphan, perhaps he would have cried even more loudly.
There was no one to look after the baby in the workhouse, so Oliver was sent to a special “baby farm” nearby. There, he and thirty other children rolled around the floor all day, without the worries of too much food or too much clothing. Mrs Mann, the old woman who “looked after” them, was very experienced. She knew what was good for children, and a full stomach was very dangerous to their health. She also knew what was good for herself, so she kept for her own use the money that she was given for the children's food. The officers who was responsible for the orphans sometimes checked on the health of the children, but they always sent the beadle, a kind of local policeman, to announce their visit the day before. So whenever the officers arrived, of course, the children were always neat and clean.
This was the way Oliver was brought up. As a result, at the age of nine he was a pale, thin child and short for his age. Though he was often beat by Mrs Mann, his spirit was strong, which was probably the reason why he managed to reach the age of nine at all.
On Oliver's ninth birthday, Mr Bumble, the beadle, came to the house to see Mrs Mann. Through the front window Mrs Mann saw him at the gate, and turned quickly to the girl who worked with her.
“Quick! Take Oliver and those others upstairs to be washed!” she said. Then she ran out to unlock the gate which was always kept locked.

After killing the Wicked Witch with water, Dorothy at once got the Lion out of prison. They went in together to the Yellow Castle to set all the Winkies free. The Winkies cried at the news.
From then on, that day was a holiday of food and dance. “If only the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman were with us, I’d be very happy,” said the Lion.
Dorothy decided to save them with the help of the Winkies. They travelled a day and a half to find the Tin Woodman. He was all broken. Dorothy cried at the situation of her old friend. The Winkies lifted him carefully and carried him to the Yellow Castle. Dorothy asked the Winkies to bring all the tinsmiths with all their tools and it took the tinsmiths three days and four nights to make the Tin Woodman into shape again.
When he walked into Dorothy’s room, he was as good as ever.
“If only we had the Scarecrow with us,” the Tin Woodman said. “I would be very happy.”
“We must find him, too.” Dorothy said.
She called the Winkies again. They walked a day and a half until they came to the tall tree where the Winged Monkeys threw the Scarecrow’s clothes.
The Tin Woodman cut the tree and then they picked the clothes up and carried them back to the castle. They filled them with clean straw and the Scarecrow is a new man.
The friends all cried. The Lion wiped his eyes so often with his tail that it became wet and he had to hold it in the sun to dry.
“We must go back to the Emerald City,” Dorothy said.
“Yes,” said the Woodman. “I will get my heart.”
“And I will get my brains,” the Scarecrow said.
The Lion said, “I will get my courage.”

I spent a quiet year on the island. For most of my efforts, I did little more than feed the wild goats with my grain. But finally, I managed to catch several kids and an old male goat. Training the male seemed impossible and any contact with it was dangerous. So, I pushed a log into the trap and it ran out.
The kids I tied with strings were led back to my summer home. I visited regularly, feeding the goats from my hand so that they would not be frightened of me. I got milk from them and I even learned to make cheese.
I also checked on my boat often. I would take the boat out from shore for quick sails sometimes. It was one of these visits to check on my boat that I froze at an impossible sight. There was a footprint in the sand! Clearly, it was from a man. I looked around. I ran across the island, hurrying back to my home. I imagined each tree became another native man running after me. I hid in my home for several days, expecting an attack at any moment.
Finally, I calmed myself enough to give real thought to the footprint. Perhaps I was scaring myself over a print I had made myself. When I reached it, I placed my foot beside it. It was larger than mine in all ways. Perhaps, I told myself, a native from another island had been on the island. I carefully went back home, ready to fight or shoot if I saw anybody.
Still, I built a second wall around my home and cleared the land in front of it. Then I divided my flock so that any visitor could not carry off all of my food supply.
I planned to find another place to keep my goats on the far western part of the island, where I had never been. But when I went to the beach, I was horrified to see human bones lying on the sand. So great was my shock. I ran from here as quickly as I could. I couldn’t believe my good luck!

A. To make it easy for me to feed the male goat.
B. To avoid contacting the dangerous male goat.

2. Paragraph 1 and Paragraph 2 are mainly about______.
A. the way I had fun on the island
B. the way I made a living on the island
C. the reason why I stayed on the island
D. the reason why I found an footprint on the island
3. What do we know from the passage
A. I lived a peaceful but busy life on the island.
B. I was frightened of the footprint made by myself.
C. I saw a native man from another island on the island.
D. I prepared well to prevent my food supply being taken away.
4. “Good luck” in Paragraph 6 means ______.
A. I found a good place for my goats on the western part of the island

C. I had been on the island for a long time but I was still alive
D. I succeeded in fighting against a native man on the island

(2021·苏州市景范中学校九年级月考)Captain (船长) Nemo invited me and my friends to go hunting with him in the forests of Crespo Island. I asked him why he was so interested in Crespo Island. “I thought you preferred the sea to being on land.”
“I do,” replied the captain. “But these forests are under the sea.”
After going through a door, we were about ten meters under the water. The light from the sun reached us. Everything looked very colourful. We were going deeper and deeper. At 100 meters deep, we could see quite well, and Captain Nemo stopped and pointed to some dark shapes. This was the forest. The “trees” in the forest were giant seaweed, and all their “branches” were vertical (垂直的). We could not stop looking at them. Fish swam around the branches like birds in a forest.
Suddenly, I saw a large sea spider about a meter tall. It was going to attack me. Captain Nemo’s man killed it with his gun, but it reminded me that the sea could be as dangerous as it was beautiful. When we reached 150 meters, it was dark. The sun’s light could not reach this depth (深度). We turned our lights. We could see about 20 meters around us. Finally, we found Crespo Island—where a steep rock wall rose in front of us.
We could go no further, so we walked back toward the Nautilus. Suddenly, Captain Nemo stopped and shot an animal with his gun, it was a beautiful and rare sea otter. At last, we could see the Nautilus. Several large sharks swam over us. Luckily they didn’t see us. We re-entered the Nautilus safely. I was tired but amazed by what I had seen.

On the fourth day I found a campfire. It was still smoking. Somebody else was living on my island! Who was it I felt surprised so I took my gun and climbed a tree. I watched for a long time but I didn’t feel safe any more. The next day I went exploring. I kept my gun with me all the time. After a while I saw a fire through the trees. I went up to it very slowly and very quietly. A man was lying on the ground near the fire. He was asleep but there was a blanket over his head so I couldn’t see his face. I hid behind a bush and watched him carefully. I had to wait for a long time and it was starting to get dark when the man finally woke up. He stood up and took off the blanket.
It was Jim, Miss Watson’ s slave! I jumped out and ran up to him.
“Jim! I said. It’s me, Huck!”
He fell on his knees. There was a look of fear on his face. “It’s Huck’s ghost! Please don’t hurt me, ghost!”
“Jim! I’m not dead. It was a trick.” Jim put his hand on my arm and hold it hard.
“Ouch!” I shouted.
“Huck! Is it really you ” Jim said, with a big smile. “Yes, Jim, and I’m really happy to see you. But what are you doing here ”
He stopped smiling and looked at the ground. “If I tell you, will you promise not to take me to the judge ”
“I promise, Jim. I’m not planning to go back to St. Petersburg! Tell me your story!”
“Well, alright then. The other day a businessman from New Orleans came to the house, I knew that Miss Watson wanted to sell me so I was scared. I didn’t want to go to New Orleans. Anyway that evening I listened at the door while Miss Watson and the widow were talking. Miss Watson said the businessman was offering $800 for me. The widow was shocked but Miss Watson said that $ 800 was a lot of money and she couldn’t refuse. I didn’t wait to hear any more. I ran away as fast as I could. Now I’m hiding here because some men are looking for me. They want the $200 reward for catching a runaway slave.
“How did you get to the island ”
“I swam across the river.”
We sat there chatting for a long time. I liked talking to Jim because he knew a lot of things. He understood signs. He knew which ones meant good luck and which ones meant bad luck. He knew which sign meant bad weather, too. When he saw some birds flying low in the sky he said, “It’s going to rain later, Huck. We must find a dry place to make a camp.”
The next day we climbed to the top of a big hill in the middle of the island and fund a cave in the rock. “This is a good place,” Jim said.

The friends walked for a long time. The road was bad, and there were no houses, no fields, no trees.

In a second forty monkeys arrived at her tall house. “What do you want ” they asked. “There are three people, a dog, and a lion on my road,” she said. “Kill the people and the dog. But bring the lion here to my house. He can work for me.”

The farmer took me to his house. Everybody was eating dinner when we arrived. The farmer asked his wife what she thought of me. At first she thought I was a terrible little insect. She was frightened of me, the way English ladies are frightened of spiders. Then, when she saw that I understood what was happening, she lost her fear. She soon became a good friend.
The farmer put me on the table, and he gave me something to eat and drink. The farmer’s son who was about ten years old, then reached forward and picked me up. He held me in the air by my legs, and I was very frightened. The farmer was angry with his son,and ordered him to put me down. Then he slapped his son on the ear very hard, and told him to leave the table. I remembered how children can be cruel to little animals, and I decided to make a friend of the boy. I used signs to show the farmer that I wanted him to forgive his son. The farmer smiled, and told his son to return to the table. When he had sat down again, I went to the boy and kissed his hand.
The family cat came into the room during dinner. I was very scared of this huge animal, but I decided not to show my fear. I walked up and down in front of the animal for a while, and the enormous cat seemed frightened of me! Then the nurse brought in the baby of the family, who was about one year old. The baby saw me, and wanted to play with me. It put me into its mouth and I thought it would eat me. I cried out very loudly, and the baby dropped me. Luckily, her mother caught me, or I would have been killed in the fall.
After dinner the farmer’s wife put me onto her bed to sleep. She covered me with a handkerchief, and I soon fell asleep.
I was woken by a strange noise on the bed. I looked up, and there were two enormous rats on the bed—they were as big as dogs! I took out my sword and attacked them. I killed one of the rats, and the second one ran away. Now I knew that it was dangerous to be small!
When the farmer’s wife came into the room, she saw the body of the rat on the bed. She was very happy that I was not hurt.
The farmer and his wife had a daughter. She was nine years old,and she became my friend. She looked after me very well, and she taught me many things. She told me that the name of the country was Brobdingnag. She gave me lessons in their language. I called her Glumdalclitch, which is the word for “little nurse” in their language. She called me Grildrig, which means ‘little man’ in their language.

Ben was awakened by a gunshot. The sharp noise came through the thick stone walls of the house. It was cold in the bedroom and Ben was shaking as he got out of bed. He put on his eyeglasses and went over to the window.
The field was covered with white frost. Nothing moved out there in the deep quiet just before sunrise. Ben looked past the field to the thick woods. Two weeks ago he saw a deer among the trees. He held his breath with excitement; then the deer walked off. Ben wondered where the shot had come from. He thought perhaps he had dreamed he heard a gunshot.
He looked out toward the frozen lake. Near the trees he saw a shining piece of metal. When it moved, Ben saw that it was a long gun. A minute later a man came out of the woods. He wore hunting clothes. Suddenly a bird flew upward. The man quickly put the gun to his shoulder and shot. Ben watched the bird, praying it had not been hurt. It flew near the ground and went into some tall grass. Safe, Ben thought.
The hunter did not move for a moment, then he began to follow the bird. Hate for the hunter burned inside of Ben. “Hey!” he shouted. His voice cut through the silence. The hunter stopped, but then continued to follow the bird. Ben shouted again, but this time the hunter did not stop and Ben started to move toward him. But Ben was in his night clothes and he did not go far. Instead he returned to the house. He got a metal shovel and hit the stone sides of the house so that the noise would warn the birds and animals of danger. The hunter looked back at Ben. “No hunting!” Ben shouted.
Ben had just bought this house in the woods. He wanted to protect everything on his land. He thought that everyone would obey the signs: “No Hunting.” Ben had just finished putting on his clothes when he heard another gunshot. This troubled him deeply. How could he stop this hunter He walked toward the lake. He did not want to fight, but the man must go. He walked quietly. He wanted to surprise the hunter. But then, what would he do He could not fight the hunter.
Suddenly he heard a bird’s wings beating the dry grass. Ben moved quickly toward the sound. He saw a colored head ... the head of a beautiful pheasant bird. The bird did not move until Ben came close. Then it tried to fly away, but one wing was broken. Ben lifted the bird and held it close against his body. The bird fought to escape, but soon lay quietly in Ben’s arms. Its body was warm and heavy. Ben decided to take the bird home and fix its broken wings so that it could fly again. He was almost through the woods when he heard the hunter behind him. “You just find that bird ” the hunter asked. “Yes,” Ben answered. “It is mine!” Ben was afraid and tried to answer, but his mouth was too dry to speak. But he wet his lips and said “No.” “I shot him and I say he is mine!” “But he is not dead yet,” Ben answered, “and besides, anything on my land belongs to me.” The hunter reached out for the bird. “I will have to kill it,” he said. “That bird will soon die anyway.” Ben got angry. “Get out of here!” he said. “I told you before and I am telling you again: get off my land!” The hunter looked down at the little man and smiled. “Say, who are you ” Ben’s voice shook with both fear and anger. “I own this land. There are signs everywhere that say, no hunting.” ...

Sir Henry and Captain Good were exhausted and weak from loss of blood. I, too, was more tired than I could remember ever being. We rested, therefore, for many days before we even thought about the future. Then, when we were strong enough to travel again, I said to Ignosi, “You promised me diamonds if I helped you to become king.”
“I did,” he said. “I will keep my promise. But, only Gagool knows where to find them, and I must kill her and the other witches.”
“There has been enough killing,” I said. “Tell the old woman that if she will lead us to the diamonds, you will spare her life.”
Ignosi thought about this for a long time, and then he said, “I will speak to the woman and tell you what she says.”
Ignosi was as good as his word, and he persuaded Gagool to guide us to the diamonds. Three days later, Sir Henry, Captain Good, Foulata—the girl who owed her life to Captain Good and Infadoos were climbing the mountains called the Three Witches. Some warriors carried Gagool. She screamed and cursed continuously, but she knew where the diamonds were. And at last, we came to a deep hole in the ground. It had sloping sides and was not a natural hole. It was the work of miners.
Huge statues guarded the mine. I remembered that King Solomon worshipped some strange gods. “Could these be statues of those gods ” I asked Sir Henry who knew much about ancient history. “It is possible,” he said. The Phoenicians were great merchants and builders. They built King Solomon’s Temple. At last, she found the right room. She pushed the door open and went in.
It was a big room with beautiful old furniture and pictures. In the large bed was a boy, who looked tired and cross, with a thin, white, tearful face. He stared at Mary.
“Who are you ” whispered, “Are you a dream ”
“No, I’m not. I am Mary Lennox, Mr. Craven’s my uncle.” “He’s my father.” said the boy. “I am Colin Craven.” “No one ever told me he had a son,” said Mary, very surprised.
“Well, no one ever told me you’d come to live here. I am ill, you see. I don’t want people to see me and talk about me. If I live, I may have a crooked back like my father, but I’ll probably die.”
“What a strange house this is,” said Mary. “So many secrets! Does your father come and see you often ”
“Not often. He doesn’t like seeing me because it makes him remember my mother. She died when I was born, so he almost hates me, I think.”
“Why do you say you’re going to die ” asked Mary.
“I’ve always been ill. I’ve nearly died several times, and my back’s never strong. My doctor feels confident that I’m going to die. But he’s my father’s cousin, and very poor, ▲ Then he’d got all the money when my father dies. He gives me medicine and tells me to rest. We had a grand doctor from London once, who told me to go out in the fresh air and try to get well. But I hate fresh air. And another thing, all the servants have to do what I want, because if I’m angry, I become ill.”
Mary thought she liked this boy, although he seemed so strange.
