Later this month, Tate Britain will host its first Van Gogh exhibition since 1947. Here we’ve collected 4 of his best paintings before the show.
Potato Eaters
Potato Eaters was Van Gogh’s first major work and, despite a distinct lack of colour, it was one that he was most proud of. His aim was to represent the difficulties of country life, so the farmers are painted in earthy tones with rough faces and bony hands. He was more concerned with conveying his message than achieving technical perfection in this painting.
Irises
Van Gogh finished almost 142 pieces during his stay in the Saint Remy de Provence asylum (精神病院), where he was a voluntary patient from 1889 to 1890. This piece was started shortly after he arrived there. The hospital garden provided much inspiration for the artist during his stay there. Originally, the flowers in this work were painted purple but the red pigment (色素) faded over time and has now turned blue.
Cafe Terrace at Night
Despite being painted more than 130 years ago, this cafe still exists in France and has since been renamed the Cafe Van Gogh. This artwork marks the first time Van Gogh’s famous post-impressionistic star-filled sky was seen in a piece, and it was painted on the ground, in person, rather than from memory. While the artwork doesn’t bear his signature (签名), it’s widely known to be Van Gogh’s, as he mentioned Cafe Terrace at Night in a number of his letters.
Wheat Field With Cypresses
This piece was inspired by the view from Van Gogh’s asylum window and was finished on the spot. The work was the title of three paintings that offer an insight into his stay at the hospital. Van Gogh was so pleased with the summer landscape that he made three copies there, one of the same size — which hangs in the National Gallery and two smaller copies which he planned to gift to his mother and sister.
1.Which of the mentioned paintings will Van Gogh probably love best

C.Cafe Terrace at Night. D.Wheat Field With Cypresses.
2.What’s the original color of flowers in Irises
A.Blue. B.Red. C.Purple. D.Green.
3.Where is Wheat Field With Cypresses now
A.In England. B.In France.
C.In the asylum. D.In the memorial museum.

My mother-in-law left us an unexpected and priceless gift. After she died, my husband and his sister were going through the contents of her house when they discovered every letter we’d written to her during our 46-year marriage. She also kept all the letters my mother had written to her over the years.
During my holidays, I’ve had time to go through these letters. I read about our early married life, our struggle to have children and. especially the progress of our three children from birth to adulthood. I began writing all these details for my children, and now they have details about when they were small. I discovered much I’d forgotten.
To read the letters written by my mother to my husband’s mother is a gift. I wish I’d saved my mother’s letters to me, but now I have these letters that tell me things about my own mother I never knew. I see Mom and Mamma shared their great love for us and for our children.
I come from a long line of letter writers and was trained to stay in touch with our parents. My grandparents loved to receive letters from across the ocean. When I was away on a student exchange in 1970, my mother told me my grandfather kept my airmail letters in his pocket and read them daily. Knowing this, I’ve tried my best to write to our family regularly.
To all of you who write to me. I thank you. The handwritten word is a powerful tool of friendship and it connects us together. Perhaps the greatest gift these letters have given me is to see how much my husband’s parent treasured our letters to her. The letters helped her know her grandchildren and feel like part of our lives. I shall collect and arrange them for my children so that they can read the events of our lives and know they were treasured, too.
Keep writing to those you love. Those letters are our greatest gifts to each other.
4.What did the author do after she read the letters
A.She passed on all the letters to her children.
B.She had a long and friendly talk with her mother.
C.She required her children to write letters regularly.
D.She wrote the details about her children’s childhood.
5.What does the author mainly talk about in Paragraph 4
A.How her grandfather influenced her.
B.What handwritten letters meant to her.
C.What inspired her to keep writing letters.
D.How she stayed in touch with her parents.
6.What does the author think the power of handwritten words is
A.Improving our hands-on abilities.
B.Allowing us to practice writing skills.
C.Helping us understand ourselves better.
D.Strengthening our emotional exchanges.
7.What is the author’s main purpose in writing this article
A.To encourage readers to write letters.
B.To list the benefits of handwritten letters.
C.To remind readers to value those they love.
D.To express her thanks to her mother-in-law.

Located 150 miles south of mainland Australia, Tasmania is known for its wildlife and landscape, including unique plant and animal species. Perhaps its most famous native animal is the Tasmanian devil, a small but violent animal. The island was also home to a large wolf-like Tasmanian tiger. It lived among the island’s famous giant tree ferns(树蕨), but was hunted by people until the last known animal died in a zoo in 1936.
A team of Australian scientists have discovered that Tasmania is now carbon negative, meaning it absorbs more carbon dioxide gas(CO2)than it gives off. The team say their findings show the importance of forests in fighting climate change.
Large quantities of CO2 act as a greenhouse gas, trapping heat in the Earth’s atmosphere and causing climate change. Many countries have plans to become “carbon neutral”(碳中和), but Tasmania is one of the first places in the world to go carbon negative.
The fact came to light when a team from Australian National University(ANU)looked into the CO2 emissions(排放)of each Australian state. CO2 is produced by activities such as burning coal, oil and gas for power, but is also released when forests are cut down—especially if the wood is used to make paper and similar products. On the other hand, living forests absorb large amounts of CO2. In 2011, campaigners blocked plans to build a large new paper factory in Tasmania, leading to a large decline in cutting down Tasmania’s forests. Consequently, CO2 emissions dropped sharply and allowed forests to continue growing instead. Much of Tasmania’s power comes from hydroelectricity, which does not give off CO2.
Scientists say that Tasmania’s achievement shows the important role of forests in managing CO2. They say preserving forests around the world could help many countries to absorb more CO2. “We need to store a lot more carbon in the environment,” explained Professor David Lindemayer of ANU, adding that “the most effective place to do that is in forests.”
8.Which is TRUE about the Tasmanian tiger
A.It was a small but violent animal.
B.It went extinct because of hunting.
C.Too much CO2 emission put it on the line.
D.Large clearing of trees led to its dying out.
9.What can we learn about Tasmania
A.Zero CO2 emissions help it go green.
B.Masses of forests help it go carbon negative.
C.It doesn’t need to fight climate change any more.
D.It covers the largest areas of forests in the world.
10.What does paragraph 4 convey
A.Many CO2 emissions arise from human activities.
B.Paper factories have a great prospect in Tasmania.
C.People are not allowed to cut down trees in Tasmania.
D.Hydroelectricity is the only energy source in Tasmania.
11.What does David Lindemayer probably express in the last paragraph
A.Carbon is posing the biggest threat to the earth.
B.Forests are the most effective places to trap heat.
C.He’s proud of Tasmania’s achievement in managing CO2.
D.Preserving forests could best help battle climate change.

Parents, teachers and caregivers have long suspected the magic of storytelling to calm kids. Researchers have now quantified the biological and emotional benefits of a well-told tale.
“We know that narrative has the power to transport us to another world,” says Guilherme Brockington from Brazil’s Federal University. “Earlier research suggested that stories help children process and regulate their emotions — but this was mostly conducted in a laboratory, with subjects answering questions while lying inside functional MRI machines. There are few studies on biological and psychological effects of storytelling in a more commonplace hospital setting.”
So investigators working in several Brazilian hospitals split a total of 81 patients aged 4 to 11 into two groups, matching them with storytellers who had a decade of hospital experience. In one group, the storyteller led each child in playing a riddle game. In the other, youngsters chose books and listened as the storyteller read them aloud. Before and after these sessions, the researchers took spit(唾液) samples from each child, then asked them to report their pain levels and conducted a free-association word quiz.
Children in both groups benefited measurably from the interactions; they showed lower levels of cortisol — the stress-related hormone and higher levels of oxytocin, which is often described as a feel-good hormone. Yet kids in the storytelling group benefited significantly more: their cortisol levels were a quarter of those in the riddle group, and their oxytocin levels were nearly twice as high. Those who heard stories also reported pain levels dropping almost twice as much as those in the riddle group, and they used more positive words to describe their hospital stay.
The study demonstrates that playing games or simply interacting with someone can relax kids and improve their outlook but that hearing stories has an especially dramatic effect. The researchers “really tried to control the social interaction component of the storyteller, which I think was the key,” says Raymond Mar, a psychologist at York University who was not involved in the new research.
Next, the investigators plan to study how long these effects last, along with storytelling’s potential benefits to kids with particular illnesses such as cancer. For now Brockington says the results indicate storytelling is a low-cost and extremely efficient way to help improve health outcomes in a variety of settings. Mar agrees. “It’s very promising and scalable,” he says, “and possibly generalizable.”
12.What is the second paragraph mainly about
A.The effects of story-telling on children.
B.The limitations of the earlier research.
C.The methods used in earlier studies.
D.The major breakthroughs achieved so far.
13.The underlined word “scalable” in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to _________.
A.accessible B.comparable C.adjustable D.readable
14.Which of the following is TRUE about the study conducted in Brazilian hospitals
A.It measured participants’ blood levels.
B.It divided subjects into groups of 81.
C.It quantified the benefits of story-telling.
D.It compared impact of two types of story-telling.
15.The conclusion drawn from the study is that ________.
A.listening to stories reduces pain and stress in hospitalized kids
B.interacting with others improves sick kids’ mental sharpness
C.story telling has potential benefits for kids with cancers
D.riddle guessing is as effective as storytelling in helping sick kids
第二节、(共5道小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Should teens do housework after school ___16___Some might claim that doing housework is a waste of time, while others feel that housework is a good opportunity for teens to become more mature. As for me, I strongly argue that it is indeed necessary for teens to do household work to help develop a sense of responsibility.
First of all, to be responsible, teenagers should learn how to manage their time. ___17___When I was in senior high, I had to wash dishes every day. Therefore, I learned how to do my chores (家务) quickly to save more time for studying and relaxing. On the other hand, my little brother did not do any housework, so he always struggled to keep to his schedule.
___18___Doing household chores can train teens to become independent people. For instance, when my sister was in high school, she had to do her own washing and cleaning, and even cook her own food. As a result, she knew how to take care of herself. She rarely relied on anyone.
Finally, doing household chores can help teens become better leaders. ___19___When my family clean the house together, I often give orders and see everyone do his or her own work. My sister is in charge of dusting the floor, I clean the windows, and my brother takes out the waste. ___20___Moreover, statistics show that a lot of students who are class leaders often are responsible for the main household chores in their families.
A.Take my personal experience for example.
B.People adopt different stands toward this issue.
C.Besides, being responsible means being independent.
D.Parents feel angry if their teens don't help with the housework.
E.Secondly, it gives teens the sense that they're part of the family.
F.Doing household work can help them develop good time management skills.
G.As a result, when I was selected as the leader in group projects, I felt confident about it.
