Text 10
Now many people think it’s important to stay healthy and be full of energy, but some people
think their image is more important and they care too much about their size and want to be thin.
In a society where “thin is in”, many of us have tried skipping meals or going on diets to lose
weight. People who have eating disorders have medical problems that cause disturbances in their
eating behavior. Eating disorders require professional treatment. If untreated, they can lead to
major health problems or even death. Healthy bodies come in a variety of shapes and sizes.
Weight is not the only measurement of health. In fact your weight may say very little about your
health. No matter what your shape or body size, you can improve your health by eating a
balanced diet, getting regular exercise, and learning to feel good about your body.

Unlike many other exchange students, my school focused on arts such as singing, acting, dancing, and many other talents, so there wasn't much room for sports. Honestly, in the beginning, I was a little sad because I wanted to participate in basketball. However, I did not let that disappoint me. After a while, I took a pause for some self-reflection. I remembered how much I like to sing even though I don't think I'm good at it. I then thought to myself, “why not be the one to try acting ”
After my first week, I loved the school! My art classes feel like a break from reality and the scenery at my school makes me feel as though I am in some talent-based American high school movie. Every morning, we are welcomed with the beautiful voices from my teachers. At lunch, we are entertained with musical performances by any student who wishes to sing.
During my second week of school, I was required to perform my first five-minute play with my class partner. I was a bit nervous, but I gathered courage and did it. By chance, a staff person from the school office saw my performance. After school, on my way to the bus station, she called me and informed me she had recommended me and some other students to participate in an upcoming two-day workshop. I first thought she was teasing me. When I got home, I found out she'd also sent an email to my host mom.
My host mom is very busy, but she planned her schedule around the activity. My mom picked me up from school and drove me to the workshop which was an hour from my school. After the workshop, we were presented with tickets to watch the play the following day. After the show, I met with the actors, thanked and congratulated them. On our way home, I was smiling so much that my cheeks hurt. I appreciate my host family and school for giving me this experience.

B. She couldn't believe her ears.
C. She was proud of her performance.
D. She felt kind of sorrowful.

A. Considerate. B. Optimistic. C. Complicated. D. Indifferent.

Losing weight is a common new year's resolution. Even when dressed up as a swear to eat more healthily, it can be accompanied with self-disgust. Those pigs in blankets, pies and desserts! With perfect timing, a US group of experts in diet, obesity, heart disease and food psychology has investigated and ranked 40 diets. Its listings, produced annually, show which diets are best for short-term and long-term weight loss, which are the easiest to follow, which are most likely to stick with-and which are unsafe due to lack of enough nutrients. At least anyone who wants to improve their diet has a fantastic resource to turn to.
In the category of best diets overall, the Ketogenic diet, which increases fat intake and reduces carbohydrates and is reportedly followed by Kim Kardashian and Mick Jagger, comes in second to bottom. Experts were concerned at the health risks of such high levels of fat, especially for people with liver or kidney problems.
The winning title is shared between two understated diets-the DASH diet and the Mediterranean diet. While you might be familiar with the latter, the former is less well known but topping the experts' annual best diets leaderboard for eight years. But both-with some of the other top 10-ranked diets-have evidence that supports their effectiveness: people who follow them lose weight and reduce their risk of high blood pressure and probably other conditions, too.
DASH invented by the US National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute promotes six to eight servings of grains, four to five of vegetables or fruits, six of lean meat (chicken or fish), nuts or seeds, and two to three servings of fats. Each serving is small; for example, loz (28gm) of meat or 1 teaspoon of vegetable oil. Studies show that the diet, particularly accompanied by exercise, reduces weight and blood pressure; it is easy to follow and you will feel full on it.
The Mediterranean diet, thought to protect against heart disease, full of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish, nuts, eggs, and yogurt reasonably, is similar to DASH, but without the specific serving restrictions, it is easy or even joyful to follow. Overall, the best-ranked diets are not too restrictive. So the Flexitarian diet-vegetarianism with the occasional addition of meat-scores more highly than a vegan diet. The WHOLE30 diet is ranked with the raw food diet as the least healthy-both are too restrictive to be the “best diet” for anyone.
28. Why did the experts do the research
A. To give suggestions to people who are achieving their new year's resolution.
B. To tell the best diet and advertise it.
C. To provide enough nutrient to people who want to lose weight.
D. To offer some information to help people improve their diets.
29. From the passage, we can know that Mediterranean diet ___.
A. helps people reduce their health risks as well as lose weight
B. has been topping the best diet leaderboard for eight years
C. decreases carbohydrates and increases fat intake
D. is ranked as the least healthy
30. Which of the following diet features eating vegetables and the occasional addition of meat
A. The DASH diet.
B. Flexitarian diet.
C. The WHOLE30 diet.
D. The Mediterranean diet.
31. What can we infer from the passage
A. The WHOLE30 diet proves to be effective.
B. It is difficult but joyful to follow the Mediterranean diet.
C. The DASH diet is more limiting than the Mediterranean diet.
D. All “best diet” are always very healthy and restrictive.
D
Beethoven remains one of the most admired and prolific composers throughout the history. He completed 722 musical works. Unluckily, the master died while still working on his 10th Symphony (交响曲). Now, a team of musicians and scientists have used artificial intelligence (AI) to complete the artist's final composition.
Dr. Matthias first came up with the idea to complete the composition in 2019. He thought it was an appropriate way to celebrate Beethoven's 250th birthday in December 2020. He began by recruiting an international team of music experts to help him with the giant task. They included music composer Walter and Dr. Ahmed, the creator of an innovative AI technology for the art market.
Ahmed and his colleagues started the process by familiarizing the AI software initially with a broad range of classical music, and then, narrowed it to just Beethoven's work. Meanwhile, Walter and his group tried to interpret the rough drafts and the handful of notes that detailed Beethoven's plans for the 10th Symphony.
The team then began the slow and careful task of feeding the AI software musical notes from the unfinished composition. To stay true to Beethoven's original composition, Ahmed's team sent Walter hundreds of AI-generated musical note variations every evening. Walter would listen to them and then select the one that he thought was closest to what the artist would have written. The AI team would add the music and rerun the software to generate the next suggestions. And piece by piece, the team was able to complete Beethoven's 10th Symphony!
The composition was firstly released on October 9, 2021. Not surprisingly, it caused some controversy (争议). Critics believe technology should not be used to replicate the human creative process. Ahmed and his team agree with their opinions and say their AI software is not out to replace humans-it is just a tool to help artists to express themselves in new ways.
32. What is the writer's main purpose of writing the first paragraph
A. To voice his greatest respect for Beethoven.
B. To compare traditional music with AI music.
C. To introduce an innovative method to create music.
D. To present the team of music experts' hard work.
33. Which word can best describe the team's work
A. Challenging. B. Steady. C. Simple. D. Boring.
34. What does the underlined word “replicate” in the last paragraph mean
A. Question. B. Suspend. C. Polish. D. Copy.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Beethoven's 10 Symphonies Is Eventually Staged
B. A Team of Experts Conduct a Mission Impossible
C. AI Helps Complete Beethoven's Unfinished Symphony
D. A Controversial Way Successfully Interprets Beethoven's Music
