Elephant Conservation
Country: Thailand
This is a working vacation at a wildlife centre. Anyone can become a volunteer if he/she agrees to help the elephant keepers with tasks.
Daily tasks
Gather the elephants at 6:30 a.m. Take them to look for food in the forest. Clean the enclosure. Swim with the elephants in the lake in the afternoon. If volunteers want to relax after work, they can watch satellite television.
How this vacation helps
If these elephants hadn't been rescued, they would still be living on the streets of Bangkok. A rural environment is much better for them than an urban environment where there is lots of pollution.
Gorilla Safari
Countries: Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda
Departures: Aug.—Dec., 2—3 departures per month
Extra: gorilla permit £220
If you're lucky, you'll see lions, elephants and rhinos on safari. The highlight of the trip is the opportunity to see gorillas in the mountain forests. However, you must be in good health—if a gorilla caught a cold, it would be extremely harmful to its whole family.
How this vacation helps
There are only about 600 mountain gorillas left in the world as human activities have reduced the area where they can live. When you buy a permit, this will pay for the protection of the national park.
Polar Bear Watching
Country: Canada
Departures: sixty trips between Oct. 1—Nov. 19
Every October and November, groups of polar bears gather in Hudson Bay. As they are normally lonely creatures, this is unusual. The bears wait for the ocean to freeze so that they can hunt seals, so this is the perfect opportunity to see them.
How this vacation helps
If the Arctic ice cap melts due to global warming, polar bears will be in danger. We give a share of our profits to the Polar Bears Alive Charity.
Your comment
These awesome bears get all the liquid they need from their food.

The Internet, search engines, virtual worlds. Have you ever got the feeling that you’re living in a science fiction
Well, indeed you are.
For more than a century, inventors have been driven to create what sci-fi writers have imagined long before. Buck Rogers inspired a generation of scientists excited about space exploration. Ray Bradbury predicted home-theater systems. William Gibson dreamed up the Internet while writing Neuromancer on a typewriter. Not long after him, Neal Stephenson predicted virtual worlds in his 1991 novel Snow Crash. One of his readers was Philip Rosedale, who loved it so much that he wanted to build a virtual world based on it.
By the late 1990s, technology caught up to the novel, and Rosedale built the virtual world Second Life based on the “Metaverse” from the novel. With 1 million active users, Second Life offers virtual shops, bars, houses and even virtual television studios with virtual celebrities (名人) on virtual talk shows.
“I think it is pretty much what I imagined,” Stephenson says. “I just shoot for the stars, while he makes great things happen.”
But Snow Crash is a dark book. The world in the novel is filled with criminals, violence and environmental problems.
“Science fiction not only puts stars in our hands, it also helps us see the meaning of our work,” Philip Rosedale admits. “It makes it possible for us to see what all of our efforts could eventually lead to.”
In fact, most science fiction authors admit that their work is usually cautionary (警示性的). “While the inventors are rushing ahead and excited about this possibility or that possibility, we’re always standing there warning, ‘Hang on just a second. Let’s think about this a little more’” author William Gibson says. “But most of them will ignore you because they think they already know all things about any given hot topic of the day. But if you can convince them that you’re talking about a planet millions of miles away and hundreds of years in the future or the past, you can actually get them to examine more closely what’s going on right now.”
28.In which section of a newspaper may this text appear
A. Book review. B. Economy.
C. Technology. D. Psychology.
29.Who was inspired by Neal Stephenson’s work
A. Buck Rogers. B. William Gibson.
C. Ray Bradbury. D. Philip Rosedale.
30. What does Neal Stephenson say about Second Life
A. He is satisfied with the “Metaverse”.
B. It is a very violent virtual world.
C. It is not based on his fiction strictly.
D. More activities should be added to it.
31. What does William Gibson mean in the last paragraph
A. Sci-fi writers are much wiser than inventors.
B. Most inventors do not respect sci-fi writers.
C. People can easily get excited about the inventions.
D. Sci-fi can help inventors to think more carefully.
D
We live in a world where we want everything instantly. In this instant world it is hard to succeed in anything. To achieve your goal, you first have to change your life from instantly to persistently(坚持地).
Persistence is the course you need to set. When you change your expectancy from instantly to persistently you will gain an advantage of time that many do not have. Time works against those who live instantly. Opportunities are never seen because when something doesn't happen instantly people move on to the next thing on their list and consider the current goal a failure.
Persistent people have the advantage of time. It allows them to step back, observe and assess the progress of the goal they are pursuing. Some things take longer to develop; some just need to be left there for a while to find their own way.
When you live instantly you gain and lose instantly. Many times, you do not know how you got there or how to get back because it is not repeatable. When you live persistently you learn how things work, how to correct a plan and how to guide it to make it successful. You do not panic because you know you have more than enough time.
Slow down and take time to enjoy the journey. If what you are doing is not fun then stop doing it and do something else.
Everything you do should be in pursuit of a better tomorrow than you had yesterday. You should take time to develop your abilities to reach your goals. Do not get discouraged just because your success is not instant.
Celebrate each step along the way. People who live instantly don't take time to appreciate what they have accomplished. They are just looking for the next thing that they can get instantly.
You must be grateful for the time it takes to reach your goal. Persistence will get you there if you really want to get there.
Why will people who want things instantly fail in many things
A. They don't stick to their goal.
B. They often change their lifestyle.
C. They want greater efficiency.
D. They tend to pursue a higher target.
33. What's the main advantage persistent people have over instant people
A. The willpower. B. A plan.
C. A target. D. An opportunity.
34. According to the text, persistent people ________.
A. work slower than instant people
B. will get rewarded for their efforts
C. focus more on the result
D. don't appreciate what they have done
35. What's the writer's main purpose of writing the text
A. To praise those who have succeeded.
B. To suggest learning the art of persistence.
C. To blame those who live instantly.
D. To persuade people to live happily.

Have you ever had to overcome an extreme challenge in your life
My teenage years had been not easy. From schoolwork to athletics, I had always been running around. Everything was so difficult.
Throughout my teenage years, I have been faced with many extreme challenges that have required extreme focus and hard work to overcome. If it hadn’t been for hard work, none of these challenges that I faced would have been conquered.
Two years ago, when I was a freshman in high school, I dealt with an extremely significant injury. This took place in my tennis tournament in January. In the climax(高潮) of my match, I jolted(晃动) my back to the left and soon after felt a sharp, painful shock run through my spine. I knew at that difficult moment I seriously injured my back. I was rushed off the court and my parents made an appointment with a doctor for the next morning.
I walked into the office extremely nervous and suffering from excruciating pain. My tennis season for school started in three months and I absolutely needed to build up the strength.
After about twenty minutes of waiting in the office, which felt like a long time, the doctor walked in to examine my X-rays. With a sorrowful face, the doctor looked into mine and my mother's eyes and said, There is a 50/50 chance that Lucas will be able to participate in this year’s tennis season. Lucas broke his L5 vertebrae(脊椎) in his lower back." My heart dropped and I felt a sadness come over me. The doctor said that I would be sitting out of physical activity for two and a half to three months.
Those three months were the longest three months of my life. I was so eager to get back to practices for the season. Every day, I would think about how it was going to be when I was fully healthy. I asked myself, "Am I going to be out of shape Should I even play this year I probably won't have a successful season. "
From that dreadful day on, I decided that I was going to put in the work to be back in top form and have a successful season.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;

M: I will have to watch my sister’s dog while she’s out of town.
Text 2
M: My secretary made a reservation for me for the 14th of January.
W: For how many nights
M: Six. But if my wife comes, I’ll stay for two more nights.
Text 3
W: Hello, sir. I need to see your passports, please. What is your purpose of entering the country
M: I’m just driving the family to see their aunt, who lives in Seattle. We’ll be coming back on Sunday night.
Text 4
W: Would it be OK to have the meeting at 11 o’clock on Tuesday morning
M: That’s fine, but it has to be finished by 1:00 because I have a flight to catch at 3:00.
W: OK, got it.

W: Mr. Black is very good at Spanish and now he is beginning to study French.
M: Yeah. And he also knows something of Chinese.
Text 6
M: Hello. Can I help you
W: I hope so. I was sitting in that restaurant over there and, when I’d finished my meal, I forgot to pick up my backpack. Has anyone handed it in as lost property
M: What does it look like
W: It’s quite small. And it’s made of plastic. It’s not leather or anything.
M: Has it got a pattern on it
W: No. ⑥It’s gray, with a handkerchief tied to it.
M: Well, ⑦you’re in luck. This one was handed in by the restaurant staff ten minutes ago.
Text 7
W: Are you OK, John
M: ⑧Yeah, just clearing out this cupboard, Emily. It’s full of old junk.
W: Ooh, what a lot of stuff. Is that a… gorilla arm
M: Yes! Ah… that was a fun project.
W: Interesting.
M: Ooh, this is the microphone I recorded my first masterpiece with. Bit dusty. I wonder if it still works. Or maybe I should sell it. Who would buy it
W: Why don’t you freecycle it
M: Oh, that’s a good idea. (10)I can exchange a microphone for a bicycle, right
W: No. You give it away. You give it to someone for free. ⑨It’s another way of recycling. There are websites that help match you to people who want these things.
M: Free… recycle. Freecycle. Yes, I like the idea. (10)But I would like a free bicycle even more!
Text 8
M: Helen, what do you think of this advertisement in today’s newspaper
W: Didn’t I tell you It was also in last week’s newspaper. (11)I saw it there and so I inquired by email. I had a phone call today from the company and I’ve got an interview tomorrow.
M: That’s exciting. Do you think you’ve got the job
W: Well, they seemed very eager on the phone. I do think that they’ll probably offer me the job.
M: So, you’re going to California
W: I didn’t say that. (12)It would be hard work looking after two boys and three girls, even though living in California would probably be great fun. (13)I may be offered the job, but I won’t take the job unless I can get a proper salary.
Text 9
W: Mr. Jones, thanks for making time for me today. Many of the students are worried about how close the class trip is to final exams. (14)(16)As class monitor, they asked me to speak with you to work out a new plan that we can all follow.
M: Ella, your concerns are reasonable. (14)But all the teachers have met to talk about the trip and exams. We all agree that there is a large amount of work for students to do. However, we are confident that as long as you all work together with everyone doing their part, there will be enough time.
W: But Mr. Jones, they’re worried about having to do the group research project and to study for exams in such a short time.
M: (15)Remember last term when half of your classmates waited until the last week to start the International Studies research paper What a disaster! I imagine they remember it as well. You know we always talk about how good habits lead to success. Here is another chance to practice that. There will be no changes to the schedule.
W: Yes, I remember that. I’ll encourage them to get started early and work together.
Text 10
M: (17)Hi, fellow workers. I have some surprising news to report. I have just come from the house agency and it seems that the owner of this place has decided not to continue to rent the house after November, sorry, I’m wrong, after December of this year. (18)Unfortunately, that means that Burnside Cafe will have to move. Now I know that we have been at this place for over 20 years and the move will certainly raise a number of challenges. First, I’m going to have to find a suitable new place. (19)Of course I’ll be looking to keep us in the same area, hopefully somewhere right here in this neighborhood. I hope I can get that done by September. After finding a suitable place, the move itself will also be a headache. There are so many things that could go wrong. But all those difficulties can be overcome. (20)Although we’ll face some tough times over the next few months, I know I can look forward to everyone’s complete cooperation. With your help, Burnside Cafe can reopen better than ever.
