Step 1:Warming up and leading-in Who is your best friend What does he/ she bring you Step 2:Pre-reading 1.Ask the students to read the questions in Activity 1. 1)When was the last time you felt sad 2)Who did you tell that you were sad 3)What did you do to feel better 4)How can you make other people feel happy 2.Have them work in pairs and answer the questions. 3.Ask some students to share their answers. Step 3:Learning to learn When you read a story,focus on the five wh-questions: Who is the main character What happens When does the main event or story take place Where does it take place Why Step 4:Reading 1.Teach the students the new words in the passage. 2.Play the recording and have students listen to the tape carefully. 3.Play the tape again.Let students listen and repeat,and pay attention to the stress and intonation. 4.Let students read the passage,work in pairs,find out the difficulties in the passage and ask the teacher for help. 5.Explain the difficulties to the students. 6.Ask the students to read the passage aloud. 7.Have them read the questions in Activity 2. 1)Does the beginning of the passage surprise you?Why 2)How did the writer feel in the past 3)How does the writer feel now 4)What advice does she give 8.Ask three students to show their answers,and then check the answers. Keys: 1)Yes,it does.Because the gift is a smile. 2)She was very lonely and afraid to make friends with anyone. 3)She feels happy,lively and warm. 4)Smile at the world and it will smile back. Step 5:Practicing 1.Have a reading competition.Let five students read the passage in Activity 2 and see who reads best. 2.Ask the students to look at Activity 3 and complete the sentences. 3.Ask three students to show their answers,then check the answers. Write a passage about someone or something that changed your life.Use the stages in Activity 5 to help you.
