Unit 6 Could you please tell me where the restrooms are
完形填空
Li Wei: Hi, Alice! We are arriving! Fun Times Park!
Alice: I’d like 1 the rides, but 2 you please tell me where the restrooms are first
Li Wei: 3 Restroom You already want to rest
Alice: Oh no, I don’t want to rest. I mean...a washroom or 4.
Li Wei: Hmm...so you mean…the toilet
Alice: Yes! Sorry, maybe Chinese hardly say the word “restroom”.
Li Wei: Yes, we 5 say “toilet” or “washroom”. I’ll go with you.
Alice: Thank you. I wonder 6 the park opens today.
Li Wei: Nine. And it’s eight now, so we don’t need to 7! By the way, you asked me “Could you please tell me where the restrooms are ” Why not ask Where are the restrooms ” 8
Alice: Well, when we need help, we should ask for help politely. For example, “Where are the restrooms ” and “Could you please tell me where the restrooms are ” are similar requests for 9 to a place. Both are 10 English, but the first one sounds less polite.
Li Wei: Oh, I see. So could you please go to the restroom with me now
Alice: Haha, you are so funny!

Some people have a very poor sense① of direction. Unluckily, I am one of them. I have visited a place many times but I may still get lost there next time.
When I was a little girl, I never dared to ask strangers the way. And so I used to walk around in circles and hope that by chance I would get to the place I was going to.
Now, I am no longer too shy to ask people for directions, but I often receive helpless or even wrong information. So I try to avoid② giving people wrong directions. If anyone ever asks me the way somewhere, I always say, “Sorry, I am a stranger here.”
Once on my way to work I was stopped by a man. He asked me if I could tell him the way to the Friendship Building. I gave him my usual reply. But just as I walked on only a few steps, I realized that he had asked the way to my office building. However, I had no time to turn back and look for him. I was rushing to meet with someone at my office and I didn’t want to keep him waiting.
When I just got to my office, the secretary③ showed in the man who had asked me for directions. Imagine how embarrassed I was and how surprised he was when we saw each other at first sight.

A few days ago, I ran into① a stranger as he passed by. I said sorry to him, and he said, “Excuse me too. I wasn’t even watching for you.” We were very polite, this stranger and I. Then we went on our way after saying goodbye.
Later in the kitchen at home, as I cooked our meal, my daughter Betty walked up to me, very quietly. When I turned around, I nearly knocked her down. “Get out of the way!” I shouted angrily. She ran away, crying.
That night, when I lay in bed, my husband said to me, “Mary, you were so rude② to Betty. Go and look around on the kitchen floor, and you’ll find some flowers there. Betty brought those for you. She picked them herself—pink, yellow, and your favorite blue. ”
When I heard this, I thought deeply: While meeting with a stranger, I was calm and polite; but with my daughter, I was not patient. I felt sad and tears began to fall.
I quietly went to Betty’s bed. “Wake up, my dear,” I said. “Are these flowers you picked for me ” She smiled, “I found them by the tree. I knew you’d like them, especially the blue ones.” I said, “I am so sorry that I treated you that way today.” And she whispered③, “Mommy, that’s okay—I still love you anyway.” I kissed her and said, “I love you too and I do love the flowers.”
That day Betty gave me a lesson on how to get along with each other in the family. I spent much time on work before and didn’t realize how important family life was. I decided to do better in the future.
