第二节(满分 25分)
Wow! Suddenly, Steve got it: someone cared about him! He couldn’t believe his ears.
He looked up at Miss White in wonder. From her eager eyes, he could feel the warmth and the
real care. On the way back home, those words constantly echoed in his mind. When he got home,
for the first time in his life, he didn’t storm out of the room for the woods. He seated himself
before the desk and placed his schoolbooks on it. Determined, he turned the first page open.
The following Monday, Miss White gave another test. Spreading the paper carefully on
his desk, Steve hurried through the test and was the first to hand in his paper. Obviously puzzled,
Miss White began to look it over. In shock, she glanced up at Steve, then down, then up.
Suddenly, her face broke into a bright smile. “The smartest boy had just passed his first test!” she
announced, proud and excited! At her words, Steve cracked a big smile, with his eyes sparkling
with joy and gratitude. He knew that was all because of a teacher who cared about him.

Text 1
M: How do you get your hair to be so beautiful Do you use certain products Or maybe it’s your
diet
W: I don’t do anything special. I wash it in a shower like everyone else. It must be a gift I have
always had.
Text 2
W: I’m sick of using my mobile phone. It operates so slowly and it consumes a lot of electricity.
M: It takes hours to get my phone fully charged. I’ll buy a home-made mobile phone this time. I
heard they’re good.
Text 3
M: Err... Ada, you look good in the shirt.
W: Are you sure But I feel I look a bit strange.
M: Hmm... maybe you should try something less tight.
W: I really need to lose weight.
Text 4
M: Jane, suppose you lost all your money while taking a vacation overseas — what would you
do
W: Well, I guess I’d sell my watch or computer or do some odd jobs until I could afford a return
plane ticket.
Text 5
W: Can I help you, sir
M: Yes, I’ve been a bit careless and left my driver’s license on a train.
W: Oh, dear. Well, let’s take some details and see what we can do.

M: Have you heard of Zoom It is a video conference program.
W: Is that the one where you can call people’s telephone numbers
M: No. That one is called Skype. Zoom is more like Google Messenger or Facebook Messenger.
You can only talk to others through the same program.
W: Is it expensive
M: Well, I use the free version. I only talk to two people at a time, so there’s no time limit.
However, if you talk to three people, you can only speak for 40 minutes. If I had more people,
I would definitely buy a monthly plan, though. It’s a great deal and tool for professionals.
Text 7
W: Mark, do you like reading news on the Internet
M: Not really. I used to like watching news on TV. But now I usually read USA Today and The
New York Times to learn about important events around the world.
W: Why don’t you read news online Don't you think it’s more convenient
M: Well, there are just too many untrue news stories on the Internet. So do you like reading
online news stories
W: Yes. But I just use the major news sites. I dislike untrue news stories, too. I do think reporters
have the biggest responsibility to reduce made-up stories.
M: Really Don’t you think news reporting has its limits in its ability to prevent the spread of
fake news
W: So what’s your opinion
M: I think technology companies such as Facebook and Google and the government should be
responsible.
Text 8
W: So what did you do yesterday
M: I just stayed at home and watched a video.
W: How was it
M: Actually, it was great. It’s called Big Night. Do you know it
W: I think I’ve heard the title before.
M: Well, it is set in the 1950s in the US and it is about two Italian brothers who live in New York.
They own an Italian restaurant, called Paradise, which isn’t doing very well.
W: What’s the problem
M: The two brothers serve the best Italian food. But the customers just want pasta and pizza, so
their food doesn’t help them get customers.
W: And then
M: Well, their friend, Peter, offers them an idea to attract more customers. He suggests they invite
Bob Dylan, a famous jazz musician, to have dinner at their restaurant.
W: Because Peter thinks it will be an advertisement.
M: Yes, so the two brothers start to prepare for this Big Night. What happens next is very

interesting and I suggest you watch it yourself.
W: OK, you have successfully aroused my interest now.

M: Hi, professor. I was hoping I could have a moment of your time if you’re not too busy. I’m
having some problems getting started on my paper and hoping you could give me some
advice on how to begin.
W: Sure. Can you remind me what your topic is
M: The general topic I chose is aesthetics (美学), but that’s as far as I’ve got. I don’t really know
where to go from there.
W: Yeah, that’s much too large a topic. You really need to narrow it down in order to make it
more accessible. Otherwise, you’ll be writing a book.
M: Exactly. That’s what I wanted to ask you about. I was hoping it would be possible for me to
change topics. I’m really more interested in nature than beauty.
W: I’m afraid you have to stick to the assigned topic. Still, since you’re interested in nature, then
that certainly can be worked into your paper. We’ve talked about Hume before in class, right
M: Oh yeah, he’s the philosopher who wrote about where our ideas of beauty come from.
W: Exactly. I suggest you go to the library and get a copy of his biography. Start from there.
M: Great. Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions, professor.
W: If there’s anything else you need, please come to see me in my office at any time.

I’m here with Jim Jefferies at the Center for Learning. Jim set up the center 15 years ago
after his sister, Emma, was in a car accident. Jim said that Emma was hurt very badly. While she
was recovering, it was difficult to get her education. He decided to help teach her while she was
in the hospital. Jim told us in the interview that after his sister recovered, he wanted to continue
the program. Jim then bought this building and began offering schooling services to the kids who
could not go to school normally. He told us that many of the adults who work at the Center for
Learning are volunteers. They do not make any money, but most of them have been working
since the center was started. Jim’s inspiring work has helped hundreds of kids continue their
studies during tough times. The gift of giving a child a sense of a normal life is important,
especially after a terrible event. Jim’s office is filled with thank-you pictures and letters from
those who he has helped. Jim also told us that the Center for Learning just received a big gift
from a local businessman. The gift consisted of 30 computers. I can barely express the words to
describe Jim’s work. I cannot imagine the hard work he’s done and what he has given up to help
others. I hope all of you viewers and those in the news room appreciate how amazing Jim is.
