For or Against —That Is the Question
Andy is the most unreasonable and he makes me so angry that I could even scream sometimes! Of course, I sort of have to love him because he is my twin brother. Andy and Amy (that is me) have the same curly hair and dark eyes and are equally stubborn. Yet, on most issues we usually take opposite positions.
Just this week in our school, there was a heated discussion on whether to adopt a school dress code. Every student would be required to wear a uniform. The teachers are divided: some are in favor of the uniforms while others are opposed. The principal has asked the students to express their opinions by voting on the issue before decisions are made. But she will have the final word on the dress code.
I think a dress code is a good idea. The reason is simple. The less I have to decide first thing in the morning, the better. I can't tell you how many mornings I look into my closet and just stare, unable to decide what to wear.
Andy is shocked at my opinion. Last night, he even dragged out my parents' high school photo albums to show me how brilliant they looked without uniforms! He also declared, "Bruce Springsteen never wore a school uniform. Bob Dylan wouldn't have been caught dead in a school uniform! Besides, when I am feeling political, I want to be able to wear clothes made of natural, undyed fibers, sewn or assembled in countries that do not pollute the environment. If I have to wear a uniform, I won't feel like me!"
To that I replied, "So your personal heroes didn't wear school uniforms. But they went to high school about a million years ago! I feel sorry for you since I had no idea that your ego(自我) is so fragile that it would be completely destroyed by a uniform." That really made him angry and he shouted, "You're just copying what you hear that new music teacher saying because you are crazy about him!"
Fortunately, the bell rang before we could do each other physical harm, and we went to our separate classes. The vote for or against uniforms took place later that day. The results of the vote and the principal's decision will be announced next week. I wonder what it will be. I know how I voted, and I'm pretty sure I know how Andy voted. How would you vote—for or against
24. Amy and Andy often get angry with each other because ____.
A. they're both stubborn
B. they like different teachers
C. they always hold different views
D. they don't like each other very much
25. Amy holds the idea that ____.
A. school clothing should reflect parents' values
B. teenagers should never follow the latest clothing fashion
C. the way one dresses should be an expression of one's personality
D. wearing school uniforms means one makes less decision every morning
26. Who will decide whether the students should wear uniforms
A. The principal. B. Their parents.
C. Their teachers. D. Students themselves.
27. In Paragraph 5, Amy aims to say that ____.
A. Andy shouldn't look up to his heroes so much
B. our clothes should decide people's attitudes towards us
C. Andy's lack of self-confidence is reflected in his clothing
D. our clothes shouldn't determine how we feel about ourselves

A valuable sketch(素描画) from World War I has turned up in a garage sale in Perth. It's a sketch of soldiers playing soccer with a tin can during an unofficial truce (停战期)between German and Allied soldiers (同盟国士兵)on the Western Front in 1914. The artwork was drawn by an unnamed German soldier during the war on the Western Front.
The artwork was given to Private Jack Shelley, a British soldier, when he was defending the town of Frelinghien, France. The sketch is an important historical document, as it provides evidence that the tales of both sides at war socializing together are true. But for Jack's family it has even greater value, since it was his prized possession.
Jessie Shelley, Jack's great-granddaughter, has fond memories of the old man sharing stories about his experiences in the war. The family lost track of the artwork after Jack's possessions were moved during the sale of his house when he died in 1984. "Great-grandpa had a tobacco tin with a dozen or so buttons from the uniforms of men from both sides. He told us all the details of every one of those buttons. To great-grandpa they represented real people he had known, some of whom couldn't come home from the war. He had at least two buttons from German uniforms that he told us were exchanged between the men involved in the truce." Jessie Shelley said.
On the day of truce in 1914, the soldiers came out of their trenches into no-man's-land and shared food, drinks and cigarettes. Some even exchanged small gifts. The men even played football games together. Later, this spirit of cooperation continued in unofficial agreements between the sides to stop shooting at mealtimes and even at times when soldiers were working in the open.
This fascinating image of peace and humanity during the war has continued through the years. The sketch is a symbol of the potential for humanity, hope and kindness to exist in even the most violent circumstances.

C. At a special sale. D. During a soccer match.
29. Why is the sketch an important historical document

30. What did Private Jack Shelley say about the buttons in the tobacco tin
A. They were collected in 1914.
B. They were from German uniforms.
C. Some of them represented his honor.

31. What impact did the day of truce have
A. It brought about more truces.
B. It resulted in more celebrations.
C. It led to more official agreements.
D. It started wide information exchanges.

For humans, adapting to climate change will mostly be a matter of technology. More air conditioning, better-designed houses and bigger flood defenses may help lessen the effects of a warmer world. Animals will have to rely on changing their bodies or their behaviour. In a paper published in Trends in Ecology & Evolution, a team led by Sara Ryding, a professor in Australia, shows that is already happening. In some species of Australian parrot, for instance, beak(喙)size has increased by between 4% and 10% since 1871. Similar trends are seen in species of mice and bats growing bigger ears, tails, legs and wings.
All that fits nicely with evolutionary (进化的) theory. “Allen’s rule”, named after Joel Allen, who suggested it in 1877, holds that warm-blooded animals in hot places tend to have larger appendages (附加物) than those in mild areas. Such adaptations boost an animal’s surface area relative to its body volume, helping it to get rid of additional heat. Fennec foxes, meanwhile, which are native to the Sahara desert, have strikingly large ears, especially compared with their Arctic cousins.
Ryding’s team combined data from different species in different places. Now that they have little in common apart from living on a warming planet, climate change is the most reasonable explanation. Since any evolutionary adaptation comes with trade-offs, it is unclear how far the process might go. Bigger beaks might interfere with feeding, for instance. Larger wings are heavier, and bigger legs cost more energy to grow.
Honestly, studying a broader range of animals will help firm up exactly what is happening. For now, at least, the increase is small, never much more than 10%. That may change as warming accelerates. Every little bit of avoided future temperature increases results in less warming that would otherwise stay for essentially forever.
32. Why do some species grow bigger parts of their body
A. They are following the new trends.
B. They have to adapt to warmer climate.
C. Scientists need them to do experiments.
D. Larger parts tend to help them feed well.
33. Where may warm-blooded animals have bigger body parts
A. In mild areas. B. In hot places. C. In the Arctic. D. In deserted regions.
34. What do we know about the change in animals from the last two paragraphs
A. It comes at a cost. B. Its cause is definite.
C. It happens in the same habitat. D. Its process will end soon.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Living on a Warming Planet B. Measures to Remove Heat
C. Pioneering Research on Animals D. Evolution to Survive Heat
Resolving Conflict in Friendships
Conflict is surely a common problem in life and friendships. (36) That's because there isn't enough depth to smooth over the disagreement. Unfortunately, even when the friendship reaches a deeper level, conflict continues to happen and can break apart a relationship. Here are some resolutions.
Resolve it the day it happens. One rule my parents follow in their marriage is that they don't go to bed angry with each other. They always attempt to resolve things the day it happens so that in the morning, it's a fresh start with no past grudge (怨恨). I've found I need a short cool-down period so that I don't act in anger. (37) Whatever you do, don't let things ride for too long.
(38) Sometimes if you sit down and talk things over, you begin to see where the other person is coming from. Realize that everyone has been created differently with various talents, abilities, and personality traits. For example, you might be a leader while your friend is more of a follower. You may be frustrated with him or her for not being very decisive (果断的). Yet it is important to understand that each person is unique and needs to be appreciated.
Initiate the resolution. (39) Even when you think the other person is wrong, it's not a bad thing to say "I'm sorry if I offended you in that way." If you're honest and genuine in delivering your words, there's a good chance your friend will respond positively.
Most importantly, be loving in what you do. Try to focus on peacefully resolving the disagreement. It is not a most pleasant task to resolve conflict in any friendship. (40)
A. Don't expect too much.
B. Try to see the other person's perspective.
C. Be the first person in a fight to say sorry for your part.
D. Many shallow friendships end up being ruined after an argument.
E. To say sorry bravely when conflict breaks out is a better resolution.
F. However, it is worth the efforts because it results in a deeper friendship.
G. For some, counting to one hundred before saying anything may be an option.

Snowflakes dancing in the sky, it was an awfully cold winter. Mary felt as gray as the sky outside. She struggled to get by the tough winter because her bills went up while her income went down.
Her refrigerator sat empty. Her only food consisted of peanut butter, bread and bananas, only enough for two sandwiches. Worse still, it would be four days before she got paid. As Mary prepared to sit down and eat half of her remaining food, she heard a knock at the door. Who could it be on such a freezing night Robbery scenes from films flashed across her mind. Then Mary shook her head and laughed at her foolish thought—no robber would choose her as a target. Opening the door, she saw a stranger standing outside, body trembling with cold.
“Madam, sorry to disturb you, but I'm lost and get stuck in the snow. Could you please spare a piece of bread ”the stranger asked cautiously and politely in a weak but deep voice.
“I'm afraid not,”said Mary, “but I could make you a peanut butter and banana sandwich.”
“That sounds wonderful," the stranger answered.“Mind if I wait here on the porch ”
“Yes, I do mind," Mary replied, "but you could come in and eat it at the table.”
Not expecting both food and warmth, the stranger entered the house eagerly. Mary hurried off to the kitchen for the last four pieces of bread, peanut butter, and bananas. In a few minutes, she returned and invited him to sit down to eat what she could offer. After eating, the man thanked and said goodbye to her.
Looking outside, Mary hesitated a moment and said, “If you don't mind, you can sleep on the sofa.”“That would be good enough,”responded the man gratefully.
Mary went into her room, and locked the door. The next morning, when she woke up, she remembered the man.“How will I tell him I have nothing for breakfast ” she asked herself. She got dressed and opened the door slightly.

To her surprise, the man was nowhere to be seen. Looking for him thoroughly once again, she confirmed that the stranger had left, without saying goodbye. Apparently, the "robber" had left without taking plaining of the man's impoliteness, Mary collapsed on the sofa where she put him up the night before, getting a little bit annoyed. With nothing left to eat, she sighed, "Anyway, good luck to him!" She got down to tidying up the sofa when an envelope lying on it came into her eyes.
Mary opened the envelope and found a letter. It read, "It is harder to trust a stranger, especially when that stranger appears homeless. You have helped me restore faith in humanity so you deserve what you have received. "Mary had no idea what the stranger meant until she saw a cheque worth $ 10,000. Tears of delight welled up in her eyes. As it turned out, the stranger, who got stuck in the heavy snow and turned to her for help, was a successful businessman. Gazing at the warm light cast through the window, she decided to pay the kindness forward whatever the future would hold.

incredibly.

(59)released.

(63)length.
(64)central.

M: Hello. International Friends Club. Can I help you W: Oh, hello. I read about your club in the paper today and I thought I’d phone to find out a bit more. M: Yes, certainly. Well, we’re a sort of social club for people from different countries. It’s quite a new club—we have about 50 members at the moment but we’re growing all the time. W: That sounds interesting. I’m British actually, and I came to Washington about three months ago. I’m looking for ways to meet people. Er, what kinds of events do you organize M: Well, we have social get-togethers, and sports events, and we also have language evenings. W: Could you tell me something about the language evenings M: Yes. Every day except Thursday we have a language evening. People can come and practice their languages—you know, over a drink or something. We have different languages on different evenings. Monday—Spanish; Tuesday—Italian; Wednesday—German; and Friday—French. On Thursday we usually have a meal in a restaurant for anyone who wants to come. W: Well, that sounds great. I really need to practice my French. M: OK. Well, if you can just give me your name and address, I’ll send you the form and some more information. Ifyou join now you can have the first month free.

Text 10
W/M: Hello, everyone! Welcome to our programme. This afternoon, I’d like to share with you something about regular exercise. Regular exercise is one of the best things you can do for your health. It has many benefits, including improving your overall health and fitness, and reducing your risk for many diseases. There are many different types of exercise; it is important that you pick the right types for you. Most people benefit from a combination of them. Balance exercises can make it easier to walk on uneven surfaces and help prevent falls. Flexibility exercises, like yoga and various stretches, can make you more flexible. Strength exercises make your muscles stronger. Fitting regular exercise into your daily schedule may seem difficult at first. But you can start slowly, and break your exercise time into blocks. Even doing ten minutes at a time is fine. You can work your way up to doing the recommended amount of exercise. Other things that you can do to make the most of your workouts include choosing activities that you enjoy and giving yourself goals. The goals should challenge you, but also be realistic. It’s also helpful to reward yourself when you reach your goals.
