Unit 1 How do you study for a test? Words
Learning goals:
Train students’abilities of listening, reading and recognizing the words on Page146 by having them listen to tapes, work in pairs and ask the teacher for help.
Step I Learn to read the words on Page 146
1. Have students read the words by themselves.
2. If they can’t, have students listen to tapes and then read in groups. Make sure most students can read the words correctly.
Step II Learn to remember words on Page 146
Have students look at the pictures and remember “flashcard” and “solider”.
2. Remember the words by matching itself with its meaning.

4. Remember the words by the differences between the words.
1) loud/loudly/loud
a. oud(无比较级)常和read连用, 强调为使人听见而发声, 声音不一定很大;
b. loud和loudly都有 “响亮地,大声地”意思, 有时可互换, 但比较级用louder, 常和speak, talk, laugh, say, shout等连用, loud要置于动词之后, loudly置于动词前后皆可, 含有 “喧闹”之意;
c. loud还可做形容词 a loud voice
2) fast/quickly/soon
a. fast侧重指人或物具有运动速度快的特点
You are always saying I am growing so fast
b. quickly侧重于某事完成或发生很快, 强调延续时间短, 常指人的思维快, 反应快或动作敏捷
The young man ran away quickly.
c. soon侧重于指两件事情的先后发生, 中间间隔时间短
Soon they were in the middle of the river.
Step III Consolidation of words
Have students check if they remember all the words by working in pairs and check each other.
If they can’t, they can open the books and read them again. Then dictate them in the exercise by themselves.
Step IV Read and translate the story
We interviewed three soldiers about their ways of learning English. They are Li Lei, Han Meimei and Wei Li.
Li Lei said the best way to learn English was by reading aloud to practice the pronunciation. He always made mistakes in pronouncing new words at first. But his best friend said he shouldn’t lose confidence and he should face the challenges. Friendship helped him a lot. He said English learning is an important part of his development.
Han Meimei has been learning English since she was 7 years old .She said she loved to make complete sentences using the grammar. She regarded English as a funny game .She can make her original sentences quickly.
Wei Li feels differently. She doesn’t like English. She has trouble speaking English in front of the class. But her teacher told her not to be afraid to do that and said, “ It doesn’t matter if you make mistakes.’ How does she deal with her problem? She always had conversations with friends and practiced and practiced. Now she realized that she couldn’t succeed unless she worked hard.
